This analysis of giving raises versus hiring someone new is interesting, but it lacks context. Sometimes, it makes sense to hire rather than to give a raise. Maybe the company and its market has shifted a lot over the last 2 years and the employee in question doesn't have the skills that we now need. Therefore, giving them a raise makes no sense and hiring externally does. That all said, I think Bryan's argument is right far more often than it's wrong. It simply isn't ALWAYS right.

I'd rather hire someone that took some big swings and missed than someone who played it safe and nailed it. The goal isn't a perfect track record. The goal is to learn faster than anyone else.

This doesn't mean being reckless or careless, to be clear. It means being bold enough to form a hypothesis, test it, and find out if you were right. It means being willing to be proven wrong - then having the resilience to try again.

The experiments that “fail” are often the ones that teach us the most and ultimately guide us in the right direction. If something doesn’t work out, that’s fine! That’s just the flywheel turning, because you can then try something else.

The only problem with failure is if the root causes never change.

So as I tell my team: be proud of what doesn’t ship or flights that don’t work out. Those weren't a waste. They were lessons.
