When I started prepping for my last switch, I realised most top tech interviews focused on:

🔸 JVM internals like GC, memory model, and class loading

But working across products and now as a Senior SDE, I’ve realised Java has been the backbone of almost every system I’ve ever built.

I almost broke production when I was a fresher.

That brief moment of silence before the alerts start coming in.
Your heart sinks, your mind races, and you promise yourself you’ll fix the setup once everything is stable again.

The truth is, setup has always been the part we quietly dread.
It’s rarely the logic that slows us down. It’s the endless configuration that surrounds it.

I forgot how to code.

At least that’s how it feels some days.

After using tools like Copilot, Cursor and Claude Code for more than 1.5 years, the way I work has changed so much that I barely recognise it.

Before AI, coding felt clear.
We understood our logic, we remembered why we wrote something, and debugging made sense because everything came from our own thought process.

Now it’s different.
If suggestions don’t appear, my mind literally pauses.
Code I wrote last week feels like someone else wrote it.

It feels like slowly, without realising, I’ve outsourced my thinking.

And that’s the part that makes me think:
Am I able to review AI’s code only because I learned to think before AI came in?
If this feels confusing for us, what about the developers learning with AI from day one?

The speed is amazing.
The productivity is real.
But sometimes I wonder if we’re building faster while understanding less.

AI is exciting and a little scary at the same time.
And I’m still trying to find the balance.

You are not a fresher, so stop preparing like them.

So, start thinking like an engineer.

When I started as an SDE, most of my work was debugging configs and writing quick fixes.

But once I moved into tools & OS configuration, I realised something important:
 🔹 SOLID isn’t a theory — bad design breaks entire pipelines.
 🔹 Debugging is engineering — understanding system behaviour matters more than syntax.
 🔹 System Design is the real differentiator — senior roles test architecture, not speed.

If you’re in the 1–5 YOE phase and want to break out of repetitive dev tasks → into high-impact engineering roles, start focusing on engineering depth, not just coding.

I didn’t relocate for my first job
I chose work from home
and it surprised me how much clarity it brought into my life.

At the beginning, I kept questioning myself.

Will I miss the exposure people talk about
Will my career grow slower
Will a remote start affect future hikes
Am I taking a safe route instead of a bold one

These thoughts stayed in my head for months.
But the reality turned out different from what I imagined.

Being close to family
saving hours of travel
saving money
and still having enough mental space to learn and grow
made more difference than any city could.

I’m not saying WFH is perfect
I’m saying it worked for me
and sometimes choosing what brings stability is smarter than chasing what looks loud.

Career growth is important
but so is a life that feels balanced and peaceful.

Everyone’s path looks different
and it’s okay if yours doesn’t fit the typical metro-city narrative.

Imagine going from a 6 LPA offer → an interview invite for a Senior SDE role at Google… Impossible right?

Well, it’s true, AND it happened to me!

My first role was as a junior developer.
And by the time of my second switch? A senior SDE interview invite from Google.

The journey in between has taught me what real growth looks like.

And honestly, the skills that got me my first job weren’t enough to help me crack the second.

Like many engineers, I thought the path to growth was simple:
→ Solve tougher DSA problems.
→ Get faster at coding.
→ Wait for the next promotion.

But once I started preparing for senior roles, I realised, growth at that level looks very different, & here’s what I’ve learned 👇

🔹 DSA is only the baseline. 
Everyone at that level can solve problems. What matters is how you reason about trade-offs & write scalable solutions.
