Am I cocky or am I just a 31 year old who spent 29 years of their life not knowing they have a personality disorder, autism, and ADHD and therefore didn’t get the support or love they needed because society was not built for people like me and is finally for the first time ever actually doing very, very well mental heath wise; for more than a year, consistently, and is making quiet yet huge moves that they’re excited to tell everyone about very soon, and is genuinely enjoying life and actually likes themselves for the first time ever because they actually know who they are now and accept that about themselves and because my (I’m the “they”) brain just works on a different operating system than the way society was built for? 

It’s like working with a Mac while everyone else has a Windows but taking 29 years to go “oh that’s why I don’t understand and these things keep happening this way, I’m using the wrong OS.”

And then realizing you’re not wrong, you’re different 

And then realizing that for 29 years you didn’t think you were different, you believed you were wrong

So yeah. I’m cocky. 

I’ve earned it.

Me at a gay bar last night… my friend: “Trump being our first out(ed) LGBTQ+ President was not on my BINGO Card.”

Me, a fellow Gay™️: “Really? With that much gender affirming care? Between the Jersey Shore look, the cheap wig, an Vance’s eyeliner, we all know who’s having the ice salad and who’s ordering the steak, if you know you know, wink wink nudge nudge.”

Politics is "how should we fund healthcare" or "how should we fund college"

Human rights is "who gets to get affordable access to equal, high quality healthcare" and "who gets to get affordable access to equal, high quality education"

Know the difference.

Ready isn't a feeling, it's a choice.

Do your due diligence, sure, but you do not have to have it all figured it out. 

Launch that business, get it wrong, reiterate, get the feedback, churn that customer, drop that ball, live and learn.

Being ready doesn't mean you won't make mistakes.

Being ready means you're deciding that you need to allow yourself to do your best, which means you will make mistakes, and you will learn from those mistakes, and you will keep doing this til the day you die.

Someone respectfully asked me why my content bounces back and forth between marketing and business content to political content these days. Maybe my answer will help you if you get asked the same:

I'm very fortunate to have built a following.

I'm by far not an A-list celebrity by any means.

On the categorization, I'd say I'm R-list at best, in terms of how much reach I can get with my little slice of the internet.

I know that by having a following, I have an opportunity to do things with it, even if it's a meager amount, as whatever amount it is, it is still more than nothing.

Some people donate their time, money, and resources to stand up for what they believe in.

and don't get me wrong, I do those things, too.

But in the world we're in where human rights are under attack as well as the foundations of democracy are under immense strain, speaking up and being loud about what is fundamentally correct, pragmatic, and human-first is one of the most powerful things we can do other than vote.

I am so grateful to be in a situation where I can literally afford to lose clients over what I say.

I can afford to protect myself and deal with the inevitable parade of stupid and hate that comes with being an extremely loud, queer, neurodivergent man on the internet. 

Not everyone has that.

I will use whatever I can whenever I can to do my part.

We all have ways we can contribute.

This is one of many.

and it just so happens to be a way I can.

Find your own way and take care of you, boo.

A lot of founder-led companies stall out for one simple reason: They hire Business Development before they build Marketing. BD is not a band-aid for founder burnout, folks... it is a scaling function. Marketing is the prerequisite.

If you don’t have:
• positioning
• ICP
• a narrative
• content
• demand-gen
• enablement
• a POV

…BD will fail.

I have zero success stories of the “BD first, marketing later” model working. Not one.

It’s a sequencing issue.

Your decisions determine whether you grow — or stall.

Someone who tells you how or someone or does it?

I don’t ask how you found me when you book a meeting with me because I don’t know how. 

I ask how you found me when you booked a meeting with me because I was already pretty sure I knew how, I was making sure my marketing was working as expected. 

That’s the difference. 

Don’t forget that this difference the next time you go looking for the cheapest marketer over the right marketer. 😉
