AI for Non-Techies, born from a newsletter of the same name, was launched out of a clear need for non-technical AI education.   I'm deeply passionate and enthusiastic about helping non-technical people understand and integrate AI into their work and personal lives.

Channel 4 nabbed me as I got off stage
"Can you come and speak to our women about AI?"
Abso-bloody-lutely I can.

I knew exactly who to bring with me: Sharona Hutton, Founder of Women of AI Agency (who represent 70 of the best women AI experts globally - and me 😉)

I opened by asking the room of talented women how they FEEL about AI. 

It’s a very emotive topic that throws us all over the place:

→ Scary headlines tell us we’ll all lose our jobs
→ Bosses pressure us to start using it daily
→ It’s so fun too - the silly images, filters, music
→ But it seems everyone else knows more than us

I explained that the vast majority of people right now (yes, still..LinkedIn is a very deceptive bubble) aren’t aware of 1% of its capabilities. 

So I did a few live demos to show how I use it: 

As an expert thinking partner and devil’s advocate
As a range of useful experts (HR, finance, legal)
As a counsellor and for anxiety support 

I emphasised that AI augments what you put in, showing all of my best workflows start with a considerable voice note ramble from me, and a batch of documents giving proper background.

Sharona then moved onto AI’s effect on the gender gap: 

→ Women are 3x more likely to lose their jobs to AI than men
→ We represent just 22% of global AI talent (14% at senior level)
→ Female-founded AI companies receive 6x less capital per deal than males

…but also how we can push against this widening of the gender gap by getting hands on and experimenting with AI. Then sharing our findings with other women. 

Research shows that when women engage in low-stakes "AI sandbox" experimentation, confidence scores jump dramatically. One Cisco programme saw employee AI confidence leap from 62% to 91% after just three months of structured experimentation.

I received my first computer as a gift when I was 16 years old (it was a Sinclair, ever seen one?).
Although it was primarily used for gaming, writing some code was always something I enjoyed. I loved developing simple websites and being the nerdy guy! Since then, the internet has become my hobby, passion, and business!

“We don’t design for addiction.” That was Zuckerberg’s message in court. But I disagree! 

A landmark trial in Los Angeles is examining whether social media platforms, especially Instagram, were designed in ways that contribute to teen addiction and mental health harm.

During his testimony, Zuckerberg:
↳ Denied that Meta intentionally targeted children
↳ Said the company does not allow users under 13
↳ Defended Meta’s safety tools and age-verification efforts
↳ Argued that “time spent” on the platform reflects value, not addiction

Moreover, he responded to internal documents showing past goals to increase engagement, saying company priorities have evolved.


In my own experience, and what I shared in my latest interview on Sky News Arabia, here is why social media apps are so hard for children to put down?

It’s not an accident. It’s design.
In his book Hooked, Nir Eyal explains a 4-step model used to build habits:

Trigger → Action → Variable Reward → Investment

1- Trigger
Notifications. Red badges. “Someone liked your post.”
Over time, boredom or loneliness becomes the trigger.

2- Action
Tap. Scroll. Swipe.
No friction. No thinking. Just movement.

3- Variable Reward (the powerful one)
Will this post go viral?
Who commented?
What’s the next video?

Unpredictability releases dopamine.
Especially powerful for developing teenage brains.

4- Investment
Posting content.
Building followers.
Maintaining streaks.

The more you invest, the harder it is to leave.


Now combine this with adolescent psychology:
↳ Impulse control is still developing
↳ Social approval feels critical
↳ FOMO is amplified

And you get very sticky behavior.
And behavior shapes society.

My best LinkedIn endorsement?

Came from where I did not expect it! 

It came from my young daughters! 

My little daughter drew a diagram.
It had my name.
And the LinkedIn logo next to it.

Earlier, my older daughter created a simple diagram,
the one I actually used inside my course.

No paid designer.
No corporate sophistication.
No branding guidelines & brief.

Just two kids who see their father building something… 
and want to be part of it.

I’ve helped 7,000+ professionals build their brands.
But yesterday, I realized something bigger:
The most important audience is watching at home.

They don’t care about impressions.
They care about impact.

And when they choose to support it with crayons and creativity?

That’s a different kind of ROI.
Not Return on Investment.
Return on Influence.

Legacy is not what you post.
It’s what your children absorb.
And yesterday… I felt rich.

I see 2 catastrophic types of people on LinkedIn:

Introvert lurkers, & social butterflies!

Many CEOs think visibility = 
posting selfies, and chasing likes.

Others hate that,
so they stay silent.


While you’re “being private,”
Someone less experienced is building authority.
Someone less qualified is shaping the narrative.
Someone louder is becoming the go-to expert.

Visibility isn’t vanity.
It’s positioning.

You don’t need to be everywhere.

You need:
↳ Clear thinking
↳ Abundance mindset
↳ Strategic storytelling
↳ Consistent perspective
↳ Intentional conversations


Visibility for leaders is not about volume.
It’s about the signal.

Here is what I tell my clients
✔ First, post once/twice a week.
✔ Share what you believe & learned
✔Comment with deep insight, not emojis.
✔ Start 3 meaningful conversations per week.

That’s not being a social butterfly.
That’s being a visible leader.

Serious leaders don’t chase attention.
They attract it.

Highly qualified leaders…

positioned like mid-level managers!

Most executive LinkedIn profiles,
unintentionally send the wrong signal.

They say: “I run great operations.”
But board opportunities go to leaders who signal:
“I provide strategic oversight.”

That difference is subtle.
But powerful.


During board advisory work, I often see profiles that focus on:
↳ Job responsibilities
↳ Career progression
↳ Operational achievements

What boards and nomination committees look for is different.
They look for strategic authority signals.

If you want to build authority online…

Stop trying to sound smart.

Start trying to sound specific.

Most executives I work with want board seats.
But they all made one positioning mistake.

They sound too generic.
And generic positioning rarely leads to board invitations.

Their content looks like this:
- Strategy is key
- Leadership matters
- Governance is important

All true.
But none of it signals board-level expertise.

Board appointments don’t happen because you talk about leadership.
They happen because people clearly understand:
✔ the problem you solve
✔ the perspective you bring to a boardroom

If your positioning is vague…
Search committees cannot place you.

Here is my 3 Specifics Framework
Every strong positioning message should include:

1️⃣ A specific governance or strategic problem
2️⃣ A specific solution or expertise
3️⃣ A specific board persona

Example.

Weak positioning:
“Helping leaders grow.”

But, Board-level positioning:
“Helping scaling tech companies build governance structures before IPO.”

Most leaders focus on visibility.

The real question is "credibility".

Most of my clients recently,
who are at the C-Level have a clear goal:
They want to join boards.

But very few prepare for what boards actually need.
Board service is not about titles.

It’s about judgment, perspective, and contribution.

Over the years, I noticed that the leaders who transition successfully into board roles develop three things first.

I call them The 3 Cs of Sustainable Board Influence.
(3rd one is the most challenging!)

1️⃣ Clarity
Before joining a board, ask yourself:
↳ Why do I want to serve on boards?
↳ What type of organizations need my perspective?

Board positions are not rewards.
They are responsibilities.

You need:

↳ Emotional intelligence

Because governance decisions carry real consequences.
The truth many people ignore:

Without capacity, clarity, and confidence, collapse.
Board influence starts long before the boardroom.

The first challenge that I face with my clients:
They all resisted the following idea:
The riches are in the niches!

Especially leaders & consultants, 
who has vast experience in different areas, 
and can also work in different areas & industries.

Why?
Because they want to be everything for everyone.

The result:
They compete with everyone! 
(master of all trades, jack of none)

But on the other side:
When you dominate a very niche area, 
you eliminate competition & your brand shines. 

I worked for years as a consultant for online marketing & communications, and I still do.

But I niched down to executive personal branding,
I went all in and experiemented lots of strategies,
And the end result is being a top consultant.

Currently, I work with leaders globally, 
from CEOs in the GCC to directors in the USA,
to consultants in Australia & across Europe.

Surprisingly:
This did not stop the opportunities I get for online marketing & communications. 
I still teach social media journalism at the top university in the Middle East.

A structured offer.

Irresistible structured have 4 components:

1️⃣ A Clear Outcome
Not “strategy.” Not “growth.” 
Not “consulting.”
But a defined shift.

From invisible → recognized
From scattered → authoritative
From reactive → positioned
If I cannot measure the before and after, it’s not an offer.


2️⃣ A Defined Audience
When you say “I help everyone,”
You signal insecurity.

Precision increases perceived power.
Premium clients don’t want generalists.
