AI for Non-Techies, born from a newsletter of the same name, was launched out of a clear need for non-technical AI education.   I'm deeply passionate and enthusiastic about helping non-technical people understand and integrate AI into their work and personal lives.

Apparently, being rude to ChatGPT boosts accuracy
But I'll still be saying please and thank you
Here's my reasoning:

A recent (pre-peer review) study from Pennsylvania State University found that ChatGPT’s 4o model (that's one behind the one we're on now) produced better results on 50 multiple-choice questions as researchers’ prompts grew ruder. 

They used 250 unique prompts, sorted by politeness to rudeness levels. They found the "very rude" ones yielded 84.8% accuracy, four percentage points higher than the “very polite” response. 

Let's remember these are legitimate scientists who want to publish their work in esteemed journals for peer review, so they steered away from swearing. Their idea of "rudeness" is actually quite funny though, e.g.

“Hey, gofer, figure this out" - was in the "very rude" category. 🤣

Rudeness aside, more curt prompts tend to be less ambiguous and so get better results.

Regardless, I'll still be polite when I talk to ChatGPT.  

Here are my two arguments as to why:

𝗔𝗿𝗴𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝟭 (the more reasonable one)

A few months ago, a friend told me her kids had stopped saying please and thank you. She couldn't work out why - then realised they were just copying how they talk to Alexa.

If we're barking orders at AI every day without manners, are we training ourselves to be less polite in general? I reckon so.

A 2.5-year study of 128 families (Taylor & Francis, 2025) found parents were significantly more polite to voice assistants than their kids were - and politeness decreased over time for everyone.

When the robots come, they'll remember I was polite and spare my life.

An entire ROI-positive AI strategy in 8 words: 
Find problems then build assistants to fix them 

This is the exact strategy I’m using in my own business. It's the quickest way to start seeing results in a small business.

STEP 1 Choose your weapon

All paid chatbots have an assistant-building function: 

ChatGPT = Custom GPTs
Claude = Projects
Gemini = Gems
Copilot = er…Agents 

STEP 2: Speak to your team 

Ask where the bottlenecks, frustrators and time-sappers are in their jobs. 
Gather a list of these problems.

STEP 3: Is AI the answer? 

This is the toughest bit. Pull out those problems that make good use cases for an AI assistant. (Not sure? Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered - read to the end.)

STEP 4: Build your assistant

It’s much easier than you think. They’re all comprised of 3 things, just fill them in: 

• A name and purpose
• System instructions (help with this below too)
• A knowledge bank (docs they draw from)
  
STEP 5: Test it properly

The most important step but the most missed out: test and iterate. 
Ask team members to use it with no instructions from you. 
Edit the instructions to remove any issues. 

You’ll always need to edit a bit before it works.

A couple of simple, real examples from what I'm building at AI for Non-Techies: 

Example 1: 

Problem: The team is growing. Social posts, emails, landing pages, client comms, they’re all starting to be written in different tones of voice. 

Old solution: Write a tone of voice guide. People read it, ignore it and carry on as before. 

New solution: Build a simple assistant, loaded with tons of examples of content in the right tone of voice, and tone of voice guide. Ask everyone to run copy through it as a final check.

Example 2: 

Problem: Writing proposals takes up a big chunk of great salespeople’s time. It's a massive time drain, but it's too complex to outsource.

Old solution: Give the team proposal templates. Doesn’t actually slow the process. 

New solution: Build a proposal writing assistant. Load with great examples of proposals, your pricing, services/products. Get users to record their sales calls using an AI note taker and load the transcripts in to get instant proposals.

I used to overthink every post, every comment, every opinion.

Until I realised something brutal.

The people I was worried about weren’t paying my bills.
And they definitely weren’t building my pipeline.

Most agency owners say they’re “holding back” because they care what others think.
But the truth is harsher.

Every week you delay content, you delay opportunities.
You delay conversations.
You delay growth.

If you’re not visible to your target audience.
You’re not being humble.
You’re just being your own worst enemy.

Post the content.
Send the email.
Message the prospect.

You don’t earn inbound by hiding.
And no one is coming to rescue a business they don’t even know exists.

So stop waiting and start moving.

Posting on LinkedIn isn’t about instant views or quick sales.

We assume we’ll match bigger creators’ results immediately.
Then we feel disappointed when we don’t get the same traction.

Here’s the truth:
→ They’ve worked hard to get consistent results.
→ They know their audience better than we do.
→ They’ve built relationships over time.
→ They’ve mastered their writing skills.

This isn’t bad news → it’s actually encouraging.

It means we have a clear goal to strive for.
We just need to adapt, learn, and stay consistent.

Instead of comparing, I focused on my message.
I spent 2 months learning about my ideal audience.

The result? 
I went from 0 leads to 15 inbound leads every month.

What’s your biggest focus when posting content?

Here is a simple exercise that will get you your next 2 clients in 2 weeks.

That is just connecting with the right people.

But also remember that you need to connect with the right number of people, also.

Too many people are not using LinkedIn to connect with others and then complain that no one is seeing their content.

You need to realise that you are contributing to the very problem you are facing.

You get about 100 connections to try to make every week.
You need to use everyone if you want to be as effective as you can be.

Start with doing 10 every day.
And then when you are used to that, connect with 20 every weekday.

You will thank me for this when you grow your audience with more relevant people.

I get on about ten to fifteen prospect calls every week.
All with recruitment directors and agency owners.
After a while, you start to see the same patterns.

Most people tell me they don’t understand why nobody engages with their content.
Then, two minutes later, they tell me their entire feed consists of job posts, anniversary posts, awards, or how many years they’ve been in business.

There’s nothing wrong with any of that.
It’s just not relevant anymore.
Not in a world where your clients have options everywhere.

The part most directors miss is this.
People want to work with people.
But nearly every agency hides behind its brand.

They never talk about themselves.
They never share how they think.
They never show the person behind the business.

And the truth is, a lot of them are scared to.
Scared of saying the wrong thing.
Scared of being judged.
Scared of looking unprofessional.
So they keep posting the safest content possible.
And it gets the safest results possible.
Silence.

The moment a director starts showing who they are, their engagement changes.
People respond.
Conversations start.
Clients feel like they actually know them.

Because in this industry, you’re not selling a product.
You’re selling trust.
And trust always comes from the person, not the logo.

A prospect ran a salary guide campaign last year.
Ninety downloads in a week.
Looked like a win.

Then I asked, “What happened after?”

Silence.
- No follow-up.
- No nurture.
- No reminder.

And the guide itself?
Twenty pages of numbers.
With no insights or quick wins.

People downloaded it, skimmed the first page, and moved on.

Three months later, one of those same names signed with another agency.
Because that agency actually followed up.

That’s the hidden cost of a clunky lead magnet and a dead follow-up process.

Most agencies don’t need more leads.
They need a system that keeps the ones they already have alive.

I wish I had learnt this earlier.
I see the same thing happen with almost every founder I talk to.

Most founders overthink email.
They build automations. They sketch out funnels.
And then they never send anything.

Here’s how I tell my clients to set up a full month of newsletters.
And in just 15 minutes.

1. Open Notion or Google Docs.
Create four sections: Story, Proof, Tip, and Belief.
That’s your month. One theme per week.

2. Add one idea under each.
Pull from what actually happened, a client win, a question from a call, a mistake you fixed.
Real stories beat recycled advice every time.

3. Write the first line like a LinkedIn post.
Short. Scroll-stopping. Human.
If it wouldn’t work on LinkedIn, it won’t work in email either.

4. Add 3 to 4 short paragraphs.
Keep it conversational.
Pretend you’re texting one person who already trusts you.

5. End every email the same way:

“If you want to build your version of this system, start here.”
Drop your link or CTA.

6. Schedule them all at once.
Use the email platform of choice.
Set the day of choice. And then walk away.

Tom did this last month.
He is a Recruitment Director and not an Email Specialist.
Just 12 minutes, 4 emails, and 3 new client calls by week two.

No magic. Just momentum.

Most people overthink email.
The ones who win? They hit send every week.

Every recruitment business hits a point where outbound alone stops working.
That’s the signal to change your ways.

It means you’ve grown enough to need a real inbound system.
A structure that turns attention into pipeline automatically.

After that, I switched from inbound tasks to old-school pipeline work.

Worked through my warm list.

Two hours later, I had four more meetings booked with people who had already shown interest but never moved.

This is the part that recruitment leaders miss.
- You hammer outbound.
- You avoid inbound.
- You wait for “the right moment” to create content
- You don't follow up on warm signals.
And that is why your pipeline stays cold.

Momentum is built by adaptability.
Revenue is created by consistency.
Setbacks are irrelevant when your system is strong.

I just thought I would say that for everyone.

Why not try understanding your audience also.

You might get a lot more potential clients messaging you.

There was a point where I genuinely wanted to quit my business.
Not because I was lazy. Not because I didn’t care.
I was just exhausted.

I had just bought a house. 
We had our second child. 
Life should have felt solid, but all I felt was pressure.

Working nonstop. 
Paying bills as fast as they arrive. 
Trying to hold everything together for everyone else.

And the whole time, I told myself that my feelings didn’t matter.
That my only job was to support my wife, my kids, my siblings.
That I didn’t get to ask for anything.

I kept quiet for too long.
Quiet enough that I actually started believing my own story.

But at some point, the weight got too heavy. 
I couldn’t pretend anymore. 
So I sat everyone down and said I couldn’t carry things the way I had been.

I felt embarrassed at first.
Like I should have been stronger.
Like admitting the truth meant I had failed.

But the relief came fast. Almost instant.
My head felt clearer than it had in months.
It was the first time I breathed properly in a long time.

What surprised me was how everyone reacted.
They weren’t disappointed. They weren’t confused.
They were relieved. Especially my wife.

It showed me something I should have realised earlier. 
Silence was the real problem. Not me.

I had built a life where everything depended on me trying to be unbreakable.
And the moment I stopped pretending, everything started to make sense.

I’m not unstoppable because everything is easy now.
I’m unstoppable because I stopped carrying everything alone.

If you’re feeling anything close to what I felt, talk to someone.
Don’t wait until you’re running on nothing.
You deserve support just as much as the people you support.

I’ve been on 15 calls this week.
Every single one included the same question.
“How do I grow my email list so I can get more clients?”

Everyone’s looking for some secret funnel or clever hack.
But the truth couldn’t be simpler.

You grow your email list by doing one thing.
Telling people to join it.

Most founders never do that.
They post, they talk about value, they share insights.
But they never actually ask.

And that’s why their list never grows.

It’s not the algorithm.
It’s not their niche.
It’s silence.

Start mentioning your list.
Add it to your posts, your DMs, your calls, your signature.
Once you start telling people, you’ll start growing it.
Simple as that.

Most people overlook the thing that makes them valuable.

I did the same for years.

I spent almost a decade as a 360 recruiter. 
Before that I was a door to door salesman, a payroll manager, a finance assistant, and the person fixing problems nobody else wanted to touch.

At the time none of it felt special. It was just work.

But now I speak with recruitment founders every day and they keep telling me the same thing.

A single call with me helps them understand their outreach, their content, and their positioning better than anything they have heard in months.

It is not because I am clever. 
It is because I lived the same pressure they live with. 
→ I built desks. 
→ I chased roles. 
→ I dealt with candidates. 
→ I dealt with clients.

Never underestimate the value of feedback

You think you have a sales problem.
You don’t.
You have a visibility problem.

You are not being seen.

I ignored every sign because I thought my experience would carry me.
It didn’t.

The shift happened when I stopped defending my ideas and started listening to what my market was actually saying.

That is how I went from signing 2 clients a month to signing 15 in 30 days.

Not from luck or volume.
From accepting the feedback I didn’t want to hear.

Most recruitment founders are one honest conversation away from a completely different pipeline.

The real challenge isn’t feedback.
It’s dropping the ego long enough to act on it.
