Growing up, I developed a love for baseball at a young age. 

Despite not being the biggest, strongest, or most athletic player, I worked harder than anyone else and was able to make multiple traveling league teams. 

It was through this experience that I learned the importance of grit, which would later serve me well in my sales career.

After becoming the top salesperson at three consecutive companies, I began searching for my next sales position.

However, I encountered a problem: the recruiters I spoke with knew nothing about sales.

They were reading off a script, couldn't answer my questions, and didn't truly understand the role or the company.

As a candidate, I found many recruiters to be lacking in knowledge and credibility plus they were pushy. This realization led me to the idea of starting a sales recruiting company of my own. 

After co-founding a successful sales recruiting company and making the Inc. 5000 list of fastest growing companies for three consecutive years, I founded Right Choice Resources.

• We’re specialists, not generalist that focuses solely on sales and sales related positions.

We interviewed 2.  They interviewed poorly.

And we hired both.

Candidate #1 did a presentation for us.

He read off notecards.

When we asked why, he said:

"I'm a perfectionist. I really want this job. I didn’t want to miss anything."

Candidate #2 was so nervous, he bombed the interview.

Round two? Slightly better. Still rough.

He was asked about his nerves and said:

"It's because I want this job so badly."

Always professionally dressed.

Always 10 minutes early.

Wrote a thank you email each time.

And showed resiliency.

What happened?

6 months later, they both were in the top 10% of sales performers of our company.

The lesson?

Don’t judge candidates solely by how they interview.

Judge them by their passion and hunger.

Me: Why not offer him $125K?

Manager: Because everyone else makes $100K.

Me: Do you think he's worth $125K?

Manager: Absolutely.

Me: So you want to low ball his offer to stay consistent with underpaying your employees?

That’s not a strategy.

That’s how you lose top talent.

And how you create turnover within your current team.

Top candidates will decline.

Top employees will walk.

The lesson?

If you don't pay the market rate, 

Prepare to lose them to someone who will.
