🔥 What I learned as an agency owner: stop doubting yourself.

Not because self-doubt disappears.
But because it never helped me win a single thing.

In the early days, I questioned everything:

 • my experience
 • my decisions
 • my right to even be in the room

Every slow month felt like proof.
Every “no” felt personal.

The irony?
I was delivering great work.
Clients were happy.
Results were there.

But in my head, I was still negotiating with myself.

Here’s the lesson I learned the hard way:
- Self-doubt doesn’t make you careful.
- It makes you hesitant.

And hesitation is expensive in agency life.
It shows up as:
 • underpricing
 • over-explaining
 • over-delivering

The result?
You slow yourself down more than the market ever could.

Here’s what I started doing instead:
- Making decisions once — not ten times
- Charging based on value, not insecurity
- Letting results speak instead of defending myself

Because confidence isn’t something you feel first.
It’s something you practice.

Most agency owners don’t fail because they lack skill.
They fail because they keep asking themselves for permission.

I still hear the doubt sometimes.
I just don’t let it drive anymore.

🔥 What you have to unlearn when you become self-employed (and nobody warns you).
 
Starting your own business feels like freedom.
And in the beginning, it is.
 
But then reality kicks in.
 
I learned pretty quickly that success in self-employment isn’t about adding more habits.
It’s about unlearning the wrong ones.
 
Here are the biggest ones I had to break — the hard way.
 
The mistakes most people make:
• Waiting for permission or validation
• Saying yes because you’re scared to lose the deal
• Confusing being busy with making progress
• Underpricing your work to “be competitive”
 
The result?
You work a lot.
You earn less than you should.
And you feel exhausted without knowing why.
 
Here’s what I had to do instead:
1. Stop tying my self-worth to client feedback
2. Stop reacting to everything and start choosing priorities
3. Stop over-delivering to compensate for low prices
4. Stop thinking like an employee and start deciding like an owner
5. Stop waiting to feel ready — and act anyway
  
No boss will protect your time.
No company will define your role.
No one will tell you when enough is enough.
 
That’s your job now.
 
And once you accept that, everything changes.
 
You work less — but better.
You earn more — with fewer compromises.
You stop chasing approval and start building stability.
 
If you’re self-employed and struggling, it’s probably not because you’re doing too little.
It’s because you’re still holding on to habits that no longer serve you.
 
I’m still unlearning — every day.

Most people won’t admit this…

Not joking.
Group chat screenshots.
“Are you famous now?”
“Who even reads this stuff?”
Cue laughter.
 
At first, it stung.
I questioned myself.
I softened my tone.
I almost stopped posting.
 
Then I learned something every founder has to learn the hard way:
The opinions of your mates don’t pay your bills.
Your customers do.
 
Here’s the real story most people don’t talk about:
The people closest to you are rarely your audience.
 
They:
• don’t have the problem you solve
• don’t understand your market
• don’t see the strategy behind your words
• judge from comfort, not context
 
And that’s okay.
 
But letting their reactions dictate your visibility?
 
That’s expensive.
 
The result when you do?
 
You shrink your message.
You dilute your point of view.
You trade clarity for approval.
 
Here’s what I did instead:
• I wrote for the person who actually buys
• I stopped explaining myself to people who wouldn’t hire me anyway
• I chose clarity over likability
• I let results be my response
 
Because customers don’t care if your post sounds “cringe.”
They care if it sounds useful.
 
The lesson I wish I learned earlier:
If everyone around you is comfortable with what you’re posting,
you’re probably not saying anything that moves the market.
 
Growth requires a little embarrassment.
Visibility requires a little friction.
Leadership requires disappointing the wrong audience.
 
Your friends don’t need to get it.
They don’t need to like it.
 
Your customers just need to trust you.

🔥 One of the biggest shifts I made running a marketing communications agency:
I stopped positioning myself as a vendor — and started acting like a partner.
 
At the beginning, I played the vendor game.
 
Brief comes in.
We execute.
We deliver.
We justify the invoice.
 
Over time, I noticed a pattern I couldn’t ignore:
 
The more I acted like “hands for hire,”
the more clients treated strategy and execution like commodities.
 
Here’s the lesson that changed how I run my agency:
Vendors get hired to do.
Partners get trusted to decide.
 
When you position yourself as a partner, something clicks:
• Strategy is no longer “just thinking”
• Execution is no longer “just doing”
• Cost starts to reflect responsibility, not hours
 
The result?
Better conversations.
Clearer expectations.
Healthier margins.
And clients who actually listen.
 
Here’s what I started doing:
- Leading with the problem, not the deliverable
- Asking harder questions earlier
- Being opinionated — even when it was uncomfortable
 
Because partners don’t wait to be told what to do.
They’re accountable for what happens.
 
The real truth about running a marketing communications agency:
If you act like a vendor, you’ll be treated like one.
If you act like a partner, you’ll be expected to lead.
 
And leadership is what clients are actually paying for —
whether they realize it at the start or not.

🔥 I don’t talk about this much, but I have stopped trying to convince people to use LinkedIn.
 
Not because it does not work.
But because the people who still need convincing aren’t ready anyway.
 
A few years ago, I tried to explain it.
Show the numbers.
Break down the strategy.
Prove the ROI.
 
Now?
I just watch what happens.
 
Some people still say:
• “Our customers aren’t here.”
• “It’s just a nice-to-have.”
• “We’ll start when we have more time.”
 
And that’s fine.
 
Because at this point, LinkedIn isn’t new.
It’s not experimental.
It’s not a trend.
 
It’s infrastructure.
 
And infrastructure does not wait for permission.
 
Here’s the lesson I learned the hard way:
The market already split.
 
On one side:
People building visibility, trust, and relevance every week.
 
On the other:
People hoping referrals, cold outreach, or paid ads will keep carrying them forever.
 
One group compounds.
The other explains. 

What I do instead now:
- I focus on people who already get it
- I build in public instead of debating theory
- I treat content as distribution, not decoration
- I stay consistent when it’s quiet
- I let results do the convincing
 
Because if someone still needs a PowerPoint to believe in LinkedIn,
they will need convincing everywhere else too.
 
The uncomfortable truth:
LinkedIn doesn’t punish late adopters.
It just rewards early believers more.
 
Visibility compounds.
Familiarity compounds.
Trust compounds.
 
And by the time some people “feel ready,”
others are already top of mind.
 
So no — I don’t convince anymore.
 
I just build.
 
And let the gap speak for itself.

This is where LinkedIn becomes critical for B2B companies.
 
LinkedIn isn’t just a social platform.
It’s where buyers:#
• sense-check your expertise
• evaluate your thinking
• compare you to alternatives
• decide if you feel “safe” to talk to
 
Most B2B companies still get this wrong:
• They rely on sales to explain everything
• They show up late in the journey
• They post inconsistently or not at all
• They talk products instead of problems
• They wait to be contacted instead of being remembered
 
The result?
Sales conversations that start cold — or never start at all.
 
Here’s the shift that actually matters:
 
Your job isn’t just to convince anymore.
Your job is to be present while buyers are researching.
 
What works today:

- Using LinkedIn to make your expertise visible
- Repeating clear points of view until familiarity forms
- Educating before pitching
- Reducing risk before the first conversation
- Becoming the obvious, trusted option before outreach
- Because trust doesn’t start in meetings anymore.
 
It starts online.
On LinkedIn.
In feeds.
In comments.
In consistency.
 
If buyers do half the journey alone,
your online visibility is your sales team.
 
Not later.
Not “when you have time.”
Now.
