Think about houses.

→ Bigger living rooms
→ Wider hallways
→ Spacious bedrooms

What’s the first perception?

“This is a high-end home.”

Now think about cars.

→ Bigger body
→ Wider stance
→ More road presence

What do people assume?

“This is an expensive car.”

Nothing about price is stated.

The space does the talking.

The same principle shows up everywhere.

Walk into a luxury store.

→ Fewer products
→ Nothing feels crowded
→ More space around each item

The message is clear before you touch anything.

“These items are premium.”

Now walk into a discount store.

→ High density
→ Little breathing room
→ Products packed together

A different message.

“These are affordable. Buy in volume.”

This is called perception design.

Space signals value.

More space suggests:

→ importance
→ confidence
→ premium positioning

Less space suggests:

→ efficiency
→ affordability
→ volume-driven value

Problems start when space and price don’t match.

→ Cheap products shown in luxury layouts feel suspicious
→ Premium products crowded together feel overpriced

The brain senses the mismatch immediately.

This applies far beyond retail.

→ Website layouts
→ Product pages
→ Service offerings
→ Brand positioning

Space is part of the message.

Even when you say nothing.

Instead of teaching merchandising in a meeting, I took an intern to a store.

We stood quietly and watched.

→ How people entered.
→ Where they paused.
→ What they ignored.
→ What they gravitated toward without thinking.

That’s when the lesson usually lands.

Most people think placement is just organization.

It’s not.

Placement is a decision design.

→ What customers see first.

People don’t evaluate things in isolation.

2) Social problems:
→ People want to signal status, identity, or belonging.
→ Perception drives the decision.

3) Emotional problems:
→ People want something they connect with visually or emotionally.

4) Psychological problems:
→ People want reassurance, confidence, or peace of mind.
→ They want to feel smart, safe, or in control.

5) Financial problems:
→ People want justification.
→ Savings, deals, and ROI remove friction.

Here’s the mistake most businesses make.

They lead with financial or functional arguments.

When the real problem is emotional, social, or psychological.

Price does not create desire.

It only removes resistance once desire already exists.

When you lead with the wrong problem:

Over the past few days in Ontario, Canada, extreme cold shut down school buses, postponed exams, and kept families indoors.

What Winter Looks Like for Some Professionals

The most important part of the buying journey is the part most brands ignore:

Google’s research refers to this overlooked phase as the Messy Middle.

People don’t move forward in a straight line anymore.

They enter a loop.

They move back and forth between two states:

→ Exploration
→ Evaluation

In exploration, people expand their options.

They search, compare, open tabs, read, and ask for opinions.

In evaluation, they narrow down.

They check reviews, compare prices, assess credibility, and look for reassurance.

This loop can last anywhere from minutes to weeks.

What breaks it is not more information.

It’s the right trigger.

Triggers reduce uncertainty and build confidence at the right moment.

Common triggers include:

→ social proof
→ authority
→ scarcity
→ price framing
→ reassurance

Most brands focus on awareness and conversion.

They neglect the middle.

When the Messy Middle is unsupported:

→ people default to familiar brands
→ people walk away without buying

Brands that win don’t push people through this phase.

They guide them through it.

→ Clear messaging.

→ What life looks like after

The moment that picture becomes clear, resistance drops.

This applies everywhere.

→ Products.
→ Services.
→ Even ideas.

So,ask an uncomfortable question:

Are you showing the product the way you see it?
