Storyteller, wordsmith, pleasant chap

I write about writing—specifically fiction, craft, and the inner life of writers who think differently.

I’m a lifelong storyteller, a technical writer by trade, a fiction writer by calling. 

For more than 25 years I’ve worked at the intersection of clarity and complexity, translating dense, technical systems into language normal humans can actually understand.

These days, I apply that same skill to fiction. I write about story structure, narrative craft, and the why beneath the work, often through the lens of ADHD. 

Not as a productivity hack. Not as a brand angle. But as a lived experience that shapes how writers perceive tension, pattern, meaning, and momentum.

I’m especially interested in helping writers:
– understand how stories actually work
– finish what they start
– trust structure without killing their voice
– and stop mistaking struggle for failure

I’ll tell you a mystery – I’m not here to sell you a system.

(Not yet, anyway, heh.)

I’m here to think out loud about craft, wrestle with the work, and share what I’m learning as I write fiction seriously and deliberately.

I am about to become immortal.
"But stories don't die when their authors do."

Was reading a long, depressing story about the Scottish author George MacDonald and hit this line.

It changed the entire tone of the post, 
the entire tone of my day.

So basically, immortality. Writers are immortal.

I'm 1/4 of the way through the final pass of my debut novel before I send it to Beta readers.

How close are you to becoming immortal?

"The lady doth protest too much."
Shakespeare nailed it 400 years ago. 
Jackie Daytona nails it now.
 
Want to make your character look guilty as sin? 

Have them explain—in detail—why they're innocent.

Can you relate?

‘okay, so imagine a wolf…'

Neil Gaiman wrote "The second draft is where the fun is. In a first draft, you get to explode. The objective (at least for me) is to get it down on paper, somehow. Battle through the laziness and the not-enough-time and the this-is-rubbish and everything else, and just get it written. Whatever it takes. The second draft is where you go and gather together the fragments of the explosion and figure out what it is you did, and make it look like that was what you always meant to do.”

So when your first draft looks like it passed inspection but failed anatomy, you'll remember two things:

• this is normal
• and you're not alone

I was an unapologetic Pantser.

I thought I was pure, writing from clean inspiration.

For most of my life, writing was pure discovery. 
But what I was writing often didn't work.
I didn't blame the process, I blamed The Muse.

I was so ignorant...

I ran into a four year brick wall of writer's block. I eventually learned this was because I was trying to force an epic Action finale onto a Thriller story, and my creative subconscious 
Was. Not. Having. It.

I only punched through that writer's block when I learned about story structure and the 12 Content Genres. When I cut the errant genre, I found I'd already written the solution earlier in the scene (a classic Thriller 'hero at the mercy of the villain' scene).

My fix was to cut what wasn't working and double-down on the Thriller elements.

And just like that, I learned what Daniel Pink knows...
I'm not surfing the whims of The Muse,
I'm engineering a story that works.

And you can, too.
