I spent 10 years in digital marketing at NIVEA and am now running marketing for Sampl - the market leader in digital product sampling.

Too many brands still run sampling campaigns like it’s 2005. Unmeasurable and disconnected from the rest of their marketing.

I joined Sampl to help fix that. I hired them when I was at NIVEA, and I've seen firsthand how sampling can become a reliable growth channel.

Ben Clapp and I joined forces with ex Lowe Global Head of Strategy and founding President of Lowe Digital Worldwide Marc Cave to set up Drugstore in 2004, an agency model that built bespoke project teams from a handpicked talent pool of over 100 creative and strategic specialists. We created ad campaigns and brand funded entertainment solutions for clients including H&M, Amnesty International, Coca-Cola, Party Poker, Selfridges and Jamie Oliver, including 2005’s most viewed brand funded film franchise for Napster. We had a proactive attitude to intellectual property, taking the view that our creative talent own a share of the IP it creates.

Our Replenish & Rescue Hydrating Face Cream took home the Silver, and honestly, we’re ridiculously proud. This was never about hype; it was about creating something that genuinely works for real, busy people who don’t have time for 14-step routines ;)

Naming your own brand has a special way of making you feel like an absolute idiot.

You sit down ready to create “the next Nike.”
Ten minutes later you’re saying things that immediately disqualify you from giving anyone business advice ever again.

I’ve built brands for years… but the moment it’s your brand, your brain turns into a random word generator with no off switch.

At 2am you’re convinced “PorridgeLab” is a genius name for a wellness brand.
By breakfast you’ve moved on to “SkynBoi” because apparently you hate vowels and self-respect.
By lunch you’re proudly pitching “Glow Patrol” (and you don't even like the band)!
By 4pm you’ve reached the rock-bottom stage where you ask the team if “Moist Daddy” sounds too desperate.

They nod politely while quietly checking the jobs on LinkedIn. 

But here’s the truth I’ve learned after naming more brands than I can admit publicly:

The name matters… but not nearly as much as we pretend it does.
If you’re not solving a real human problem, a perfect name won’t save you.
If your business engine isn’t efficient, no clever wordplay will fix it.
And if your storytelling is flat, even the cleanest .com domain won’t make anyone care.

Name your brand something you can live with.
Then pour your energy into:
1. Solving a genuine problem.
2. Building a machine that works.
3. Communicating in a way that makes humans stop, feel something, and lean in.

Do those three things well…
…and honestly, you could call the brand “Moist Daddy” and still win.

(But please don’t. For everyone’s sake.)

Stop trying to build the perfect business.
Build the useful one.

A few weeks ago my wife, Charlotte Schaller bought me Arnold Schwarzenegger’s book Be Useful.

A simple gift, but one that challenged a mindset I didn’t even realise I was still carrying.

I spent years in the creative departments of big advertising agencies. Brilliant places, full of brilliant people…but built on a core belief:

“Don’t show it until it’s perfect.”

Perfect decks.
Perfect scripts.
Perfect ideas polished within an inch of their lives before they ever met the real world.

It served me well for a time, but it also taught me the exact opposite of what entrepreneurship actually demands.
I’ve had to unlearn that perfection instinct every day.

Because here’s the truth Arnold nails again and again in his book:

Perfection is passive.
Usefulness is active.

None of our businesses at Sweet Spot grow because the idea is flawless on day one.

They grow because they are useful, and we learn by putting them in the hands of real people early, listening hard, iterating publicly, and improving fast.

Arnold’s philosophy is simple:
Do the reps.
Show up.
Be relentlessly practical.
Let usefulness drive excellence, not the other way around.

Founders waste months chasing “perfect.”
But perfect businesses are fragile.
Useful businesses are resilient.

So if you’re building something right now, and you’re stuck polishing… rewriting… reworking… hiding behind refinement…

Take it from Arnold.
And from someone who spent years being trained to do the opposite:

Drop the perfectionism.
Solve a real problem.
Be useful.

In my early career I barely noticed the Budget. 

Not because I didn’t care, but because I genuinely didn’t understand how it affected the world I worked in. It all felt distant, something for economists, not people trying to get things made.

But startups are different. 

They’re sensitive, fast-moving, and heavily shaped by policy, even the small changes. So now I pay attention, because the details really do matter.

And I know there are plenty of people like me, building, creating, juggling, who don’t have time to wade through 80 pages of Treasury language.

So here’s the Budget, broken down in plain English.

What actually happened:

1. Taxes are rising in real terms.
Not enough to cause panic, but enough to tighten margins. When you’re building from scratch, those shifts shape what you can do next.

2. The Government talks up growth while making growth more expensive.
Hiring, scaling and investing all get tougher. That’s the bit founders feel immediately.

3. There is support, but it’s not easy to access.
Innovation incentives, investment zones and green funding all exist. But they live in a maze that most early-stage teams simply don’t have time to navigate.

What does this mean for UK startups?


Founders don’t expect perfect conditions. But we do benefit from clarity, consistency and an environment that makes building a little less uphill.

This Budget signals intent, but it doesn’t yet create the conditions that help early-stage teams move faster.

So most of us will continue doing what we’ve always done: working with what’s in front of us, adjusting quickly, and finding progress anyway.

The UK’s growth story won’t come from policy pages, it will come from the people building things in spite of them.

What Does An Expert Product Developer Do?

Rachel Reeves’ new budget lands (or should I say leaked) at an interesting moment for UK start-ups and consumer goods. There’s real encouragement for innovation, but also a few realities founders will need to navigate.

Three things that will help founders:

1. A clearer pro-investment stance.
Incentives and reliefs signal that capital is welcome again. For early-stage brands, especially those with strong validation, this could unlock conversations that felt stuck last year.

2. Support for skills and productivity.
Investment in training and apprenticeships is quietly powerful. Good people are the hardest thing to find in a start-up, anything that widens that pipeline matters.

3. A nudge to consumer confidence.
Putting a bit more spending power back into households helps any product that solves a real problem, tastes better, works better, or brings genuine value.

Three things that will hinder us:

1. Higher operating costs.
Wage uplifts, compliance and regulatory shifts will squeeze margins, especially for consumer goods where every penny counts.

2. Supply-chain friction.
Green targets and UK-production messaging are obvs positive long-term, but short-term they will disrupt brands reliant on global suppliers or niche ingredients.

3. More complexity for small teams.
Lean start-ups move fast… until the paperwork slows them down. Anything that adds process will bite if you don’t systemise early.

The bigger picture…

Budgets don’t build businesses, founders do.

But this one does set a tone: innovation matters, responsible growth matters, and Britain wants to continue being competitive.

The brands that win in the next few years won’t be the loudest… they’ll be the ones with the strongest fundamentals and the clearest purpose.

Fraser Nelson summed it up perfectly today: “To govern is to choose… Rt Hon Rachel Reeves has chosen more welfare and higher taxes… imposing a heavier tax burden than Denis Healey dared in the 1970s was always going to interfere with her mission of boosting growth.”

My takeaway?
If we keep helping people stay out of work, we’re not helping them at all.

Work isn’t just wages, it’s self-esteem, structure, community and, frankly, sanity. Every founder I know has seen how purpose transforms people. Taking on responsibility, even small responsibilities, builds confidence. Removing it erodes it.

If Britain wants growth, we need to incentivise everyone who can work to work. Not through pressure, but through making work worth doing.

A few ways the start-up community can help:

Flexible work that matches real lives. Not everyone can do 9–5. Startups can lead the way with hours, remote structures and project-based roles that open the door for more people.
Skills-first hiring. Stop obsessing over CVs. Create routes in for people with aptitude, not polished backgrounds.
Meaningful micro-roles. Short-term, part-time and skills-building roles give people the confidence and momentum to re-enter work.
Coaching and mentorship. Even a light-touch support system can give someone the encouragement they need to stay in work and grow.
Community-driven purpose. When startups articulate why they exist, people rally. Purpose attracts talent who want to feel part of something.

If we want a country that grows, we need a country that works, literally.
And the start-up ecosystem is one of the few places where we can actually build the kind of work that lifts people up instead of leaving them behind.
