All good things must come to an end

Yes, we're ending our business relationship...

I've known Tina for 7 years and worked with her on and off for 5.

We have a lot in common and we've become great friends.

Now we're going in different directions. Which makes me sad.

But I'm also excited - for both of us!

Tina wants to do something that lights up her soul, and I have no doubt what she's working on is going to be incredible. (Watch that space!)

And I want to do what I do best - helping people with their LinkedIn & business growth strategy. 

So we're both doubling down on what works for each of us.

It doesn't mean I'll never work with Tina again. I'm sure I will. We'll always have a connection and I know we'll collaborate on projects in future.

But now it's time for each of us to spread our wings.

I made a commitment to myself that I would post every day Monday to Friday...

So this is me keeping my promise to myself.

I really didn't feel like posting today, or have anything that I really wanted to say.

I get those days sometimes, but usually I have content written in advance.

Not today.

So at least you know this was written by me and not ChatGPT 😅

I know why your followers don't convert into leads.

And I know how to fix it.

LinkedIn is different from all other social media platforms in may ways...

• It's for networking
• It's great for business
• It can help you find a job
• It's the 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘧𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 platform
• Its users are the highest earners

All these things are true, but there's something else very different about LinkedIn that you need to understand if you want to use it to help grow your business.

𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘃𝘀. 𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝘀

It's great to have thousands of followers on LinkedIn.

And you should always aim to have as many as possible.

But connections are equally, if not more important.

That's because of the way the algorithm works.

Whenever you post something the algorithm runs a test with your 1st degree connections before anyone else.

So you have to be sure that not only does your content land with them, but they are also the right kind of person, i.e. your ICP.

If you don't have a high percentage of your ideal clients in your network, you may grow your following with random people, signalling to LinkedIn that they should show your content to more random people, instead of your potential clients.

And here's the most important part: 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝟭𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆. 

But 𝗡𝗢𝗧 your followers (unless they have open profile...)

You might think "so what?" 

Well, I'll tell you what... 🤓

Business is about relationships, not followers.

You can garner attention and communicate '1-to-many' through content.

And that goes some way to building a relationship.

But if you sell a high-ticket offer, you need to have 1-to-1 conversations.

So when your followers send you signals like:

• Subscribing to your LI newsletter
• Opting in to your lead magnets
• Commenting on your posts
• Engaging with your posts
• Inviting you to connect
• Viewing your profile
• Or following you

This is the exact moment 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮 to start a real, human 1-to-1 conversation. 

It takes effort, but it's the fastest way to grow your business.

My first time speaking in public was a disaster.

I didn't just bomb. I crashed and burned.

I was asked to present in front of about 200 engineers and technicians at the company I worked for. 

The subject I was given didn't feel comfortable from the beginning, but still, I agreed to it, created my little slide deck and off I went.

The brief I was given by the organiser was "just have a discussion - get people talking and debating".

I had no idea whatsoever how to do that and I was nervous as hell.

On the morning of the event, I got into a conversation with one of the other presenters and I shared what I was going to cover.

He asked me to show him my slides, so I did, of course. Why wouldn't I?

He said they were great and it made him remember something he'd missed in his own presentation. That actually helped calm my nerves a little...

He was speaking right before me and to my horror, when he got up to present, I saw that he'd taken the main theme of my presentation and made it the main theme of his.

I can't really remember much about my presentation, except for that awful feeling of complete shame and embarrassment. 

I didn't present in public again for many years. But of course, if you want to progress in a company or in business, public speaking is something you need to master.

So I slowly got back on that horse and kept trying...

I don't think I'll ever feel like I've mastered it. But I don't get hung up on that either.

Last week I ran a workshop. 

I was expecting 20-30 people but over 100 showed up and they were all called Adrian Shiel.

That's not some kind of pun. The were actually named 'Adrian Shiel' in Zoom!

For a few milliseconds, that horrible feeling came over me that reminded me about that incident years earlier. 

But I caught it. I took it in my stride and laughed about it. Everything was fine.

Does this mean I've mastered public speaking?

Probably not, and probably never will. 

But I no longer get stressed out when things don't go to plan. 

So I guess I've mastered something within myself. I'll take that.

People are freaking out about the boost feature. 

But I’m laughing about it. Why? 

Because I know the real money on LI is in the DMs.

So I'm not that bothered by declining impressions.

People come here and post AI generated 'meh' posts and think that's going to get them clients.

But what gets overlooked is that it doesn't matter how good your content is (well, I guess good content helps 🤓).

If you don't know how to network and build relationships, it's always going to be a struggle.

Because it comes down to this:

People do business with people they trust.

So if you just focus on building trust, it will help your business grow.

And in my opinion there's no better place to do that than LinkedIn.

Imperial Tobacco Group (ITG) is a FTSE 25 international company and the fourth largest tobacco manufacturer in the world. ITG operates at an extremely rapid speed within the fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) industry. 

ITG embarked on a worldwide Sales Force Transformation called 3FT.  My role within this project was to manage all the resource strategy within the UK (ITUK) adhering to 3FT processes.  During this sales transformation project I had two large and complex campaigns to deliver:

Managed a National Resource Campaign of 115 vacancies across 48 separate depot locations.  

•	Scoping and creation of project plan
•	Management of external suppliers 
•	Negotiation of commercial terms with third party suppliers
•	Negotiation and approval of Assessment Centre (AC) design and content ensuring fit for purpose materials and tools
•	Budget control
•	Delivering presentations and webinars to senior stakeholders. 
•	Managed and facilitated 72 AC’s nationally across 17 locations resulting in 100% hiring delivery within a very tight dead line.
•	36 days of ACs held within 13 working days

Managed Resourcing strategy for Internal Senior Leadership Campaign

•	Built process around resourcing for high number of business critical highly sensitive roles across varying levels of seniority.

Boeing

Boeing is one of the largest aircraft manufacturers in the world, with over 140,000 staff across 70 countries. Boeing was awarded a 10 year, 700 million pound IT project working in partnership with the MOD on a logistics programme called Log NEC (Logistics Network Enabled Capability).  Upon joining Boeing I was the first and only Staffing Specialist that worked from the Bristol office.  Due to the length and nature of this contract it evolved into three phases: 

Phase one:  Designed and implemented the resourcing model. Identified multiple issues, designed a process fit for purpose, made recommendations towards continuous improvement, and realigned the resourcing application model. 

Phase two: Resourced new team members and managed the Log NEC resourcing team. Whilst managing the team I regularly reported and updated Log NEC board members, EMEA and Global Resourcing Managers regarding the resourcing team’s activity. 

Phase Three: Transferred to EMEA delivery.  International engagement throughout UK, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Dubai, Qatar, Poland, France, Germany. In order to be successful I quickly developed a strong understanding of the different employment laws, time zones, working days, cultures and advertising strategies.

Achievements During Phases 1-3 
 
•	Multiple improvements plans implemented to which the USA had enforced for 15 years.
•	Reviewed and improved efficiencies in which candidates applied though Boeing’s ATS.
•	Increased candidate CV application up to 700% and minimalised candidate drop off rate.
•	Implemented security question reducing the rate from 90% to around 10%.
•	Influenced USA Advertising Team to agree to new advertising strategy at a large cost saving to the business.
•	Trained new starters and managed the day to day operations of the Bristol team.
•	Improved direct hiring strategy and made on average a cost saving of circa 525K from direct placements
•	Made 13 EMEA placements in first four months including MD’s level

RM Education

Was originally brought onto deal with the 'Building Schools for Future' (BSF) programme which RM were the market leader for.  My role was to be solely accountable for all the contract vacancies (as well as a few technical perm positions).  Advising, recommending and dealing with managers of all levels of seniority, working with highly technical and business based vacancies and providing a very consultative approach were all parts of my day to day work.   

Given the nature of the ever changing BSF project and the speed of turn around the contract market demanded I was always working in a very proactive and reactive environment.  It was not unusual to have a request at 4.00pm on a Friday afternoon for 2 or 3  Monday morning contract starters.  Running the full end to end process from scratch; conducting a spec briefing, advertising (if necessary), searching, negotiating, shortlisting, scheduling interviews I often turned around placements in under an hour (and never more than half a day). This enabled RM to rely on my market knowledge, fast paced and tenacious attitude to getting the job done and generally staying in control from beginning to end.  Spending a lot of time building candidate talent pools and building a network of niche candidates was also a large part of my job in order to minimise the amount of 'reactive work' required.

After 3 months at RM the Government announced the slashing of the BSF budgets.  As a result my work load dropped dramatically.  Although it was a brief contract of 3 months at RM I left on very amicable terms with very positive references.

Worked as a Senior On Site Consultant for Camelot the National Lottery Operator and specifically recruited within the Programmes and IT Division.

After being at Camelot for a number of months my role migrated into a slightly more strategic position. I focused predominately on building the new in house PSL Camelot launched. This involved reviewing the current list of multiple agencies, trailing recommended new agencies, collecting all MI reports regarding agency delivery and gathering all significant information from hiring managers across the business. Was also heavily involved in the PSL agency fees and SLA negotiations.

Prior to this I dealt with high volume recruitment and actively filled the roles myself. 

I also managed third party suppliers such as recruitment agencies (for various roles outside my work balance) and additional suppliers such as job boards and service providers.

I provided a consultative approach with all senior level hiring managers advising on recruitment best practices, methods and approaches as well as providing general HR and legal advice. Additionally I regularly advised and mentored more junior consultants within the team. My consultative approach ensured the vacancies were placed within the desired time frames, expectations were managed as well as providing a highly professional service which enabled me to facilitate change.

MI reporting, recruitment reviews, business relationship management and interviewing were also important parts of my role.

Worked on a contract basis until the high volume of vacancies were filled and the new PSL was launched.

Leadership Confidence and Assertiveness Coach

Week one in the new world of being a professional gypsy…. and it was nothing like I expected. 

It’s been a week of carrying boxes, using spanners, F bombs, complex logistics, dark and rainy evenings. 

It hasn't been a week of cruising country lanes, coffee in hand whilst soaking up the freedom and sun. 

So here’s how my first week of #vanlife actually looked:

~ Tuesday - Bought the van and drove it home, gripping the wheel and checking my mirrors 50 thousand times before any manoeuvre like a learner on their first lesson.

~ Wednesday - Narrowed down what exactly I was taking on the van and mid-process received the angriest phone call from the angriest campsite owner because her staff had quoted me the wrong price. She was very mad about this. She didn’t ask for more money. She was just angry I had been given the price I had. Errrrrm I think that’s a chat you need to have with your staff mate. All I did was walk in and ask. #DontBeABellend

~ Thursday - Grabbed another car full of clobber and started setting van up.

~ Friday - Moved in. Unpacked, repacked, unpacked, repacked… then discovered what happens when the toilet flush doesn’t work and you pull out the canister to check it. (Never again.) Details of this beautiful story are best saved on T*ktok or Y*outube. ;) 

~ Saturday - Continued rearranging and unpacking what felt like 25 million boxes. It’s totally different to going on holiday because when you’re planning to live in it for a few years, every inch of where things go matters.

~ Sunday - continued unpacking and rearranging. 😂

~ Monday - Collected more clothes and clobber to do …. you guessed it ….more unpacking and rearranging. 

~ Tuesday (today) - Off to a new campsite. Half the price. Twice the charm. Adorable - not angry owners. 

I can already see this lifestyle is going to be epic once I find my rhythm - but  chasing freedom seemingly comes with a lot of moving parts. It certainly doesn’t happen overnight.

But I’m bloody glad to be here.

It’s a bit nuts and chaotic - but I can see how it will be freeing ….and I’m here for it!  🚐

Week two of van-life and it was very different to last week. 

Firstly it’s basically been rain, rain and more bloody rain. 

I’ve barely moved because of it, which has been annoying, but it forced me into practical mode: 

- returned my bike that could hardly fit in the van garage - new one coming this weekend. 
~ sorted a few gadgets - pull this lever something happens. Press this button something else happens.  I’ve spent ages pressing random things to see what happens and familiarising myself with it all. 
~ fixed the plate-and-glass-risk of them all going flying when I drive - my new padded containers are ace!
~ I’ve even bought some traction mats because mildly concerned I’m slowly sinking into the grass with all this rain. I’ll be choosing gravel from now on - well whilst we have this poor down of rain anyway. 

The campsite owner has been brilliant though - genuinely helpful, no hassle, no dramas. 

And maybe that’s the point. 

Not every week needs a drama (thank the Lord). 

There was one sunny day and I made the most of it. 

It happened to land on a client day, so this was my office….window open, warm air, arm dangling out.

It was bloody lovely. 

Work-wise, after taking all of October off, I’m easing back in. 

Still not taking new 1:1 clients (hasn’t  been my focus for over 6 months now), but I am speaking to a few corporate companies about on-site training as well as I’m building something new behind the scenes.

The thing I’m building behind the scenes I can’tshare it yet, but it’ll arrive when it’s ready. I’m in no rush. Kinda got a lot of other things to contend with too. 

Not the most thrilling update this week - but it’s real. 

This week has mostly been about ground work and prep - the boring bit nobody talks about much. 

Things will likely look a little different next week but for the love of God can someone please stop this down pour of rain. 🌧️ 

Simply getting something out my storage space means I get back in the van looking like I’ve jumped in the shower fully clothed. It’s nuts. 

I think I’ve chosen literally the wettest and coldest 2 weeks of the year to start this vanlife mission. 😂😂

Anyhooooo here’s a quick peek at my new office - this was the one day this week it didn’t throw it down all day. 😂🙏❤️🙏
