Every FoodTech founder wants to land a massive Western CPG like PepsiCo or Nestlé. It looks great on a pitch deck.

🙅‍♂️ Auroni Majumdar, Vice President of R&D Global Open Innovation at CJ Foods, says it's a trap. If you are talking to an SVP doing "platform work" across ten different categories, that's a red flag. They are looking everywhere and nowhere. Worse, getting a product into US big-box retail requires shelf-life studies and annual shelf resets that push commercialization out 3+ years. Your startup will die waiting for the PO.

As Auroni explained in the episode:
"I'm a very near-term thinker... I don't want to spend money doing research projects. That's not my business model. My job is to use technology, not commercialize it." ⏱️

Instead of dying in the US retail waiting room, smart founders are looking at vertically integrated Asian MNCs like CJ Foods, where innovation cycles are faster and paths to market shorter. 💯

Turning 39 is a moment for reflection. I am reflecting on my favorite meal from last year. Ghana->South Korea.

38 was eating freshly cut cocoa fruit in the cocoa jungles of Ghana. 39 was Blue Fin tuna belly in South Korea.

The cultures could not be more different. One has one of the world's highest average income and the other lowest. 

One has the world's lowest birthrate and the other the highest. 

One was tropical weather and the other lined the streets with white fresh snow.

The cultures maybe different but I did not change. I was as comfortable in Ghana and in Seoul. A Moldovan born, San Francisco raised Caucasian, Orthodox kosher keeping Jew working at the forefront of food technology and agriculture.

I guess this is why I'll be in Agrifood tech for the rest of my professional life. Food is associated with my happiest memories. 

Ultimately this is who I am. Bringing cultures together around a beautifully set table.

I need to buy a lottery ticket, cause i foretold the future. 

Two weeks ago in Korea, I shared that Big Food is the next Big Tobacco. Four days ago, a 60 Minutes expose on UPFs told the same story- (Link in the comments)

Next Prediction: 

The Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement (MSA) was a $200B+ Settlement with the US Government. In ten years' time, there will be a settlement with Big Food for the damage they have caused to the US health system. 

The process will take a decade, but a fundamental shift will happen. I believe that Ayana Bio and plant cell culture are at the edge of transforming UPFs into nutritient rich foods that make us healthy rather than sick. 

Now time to run and get a lottery ticket before Shabbat.

Deep Tech founders are addicted to the prestige of US biotech hubs. They raise millions, burn it on Cambridge rent, and run out of cash before hitting commercialization.

Del Afonso and Harmony Baby Nutrition played a different game. 🧠 

🔓 When his $6M Seed round started running low, he didn't panic-pitch VCs in a down market. Instead, he looked south. By moving their formulation R&D to Brazil, he slashed costs and unlocked a massive source of non-dilutive capital.

"The amount of money we pay for a senior researcher in the US... we can hire four to five researchers in Brazil. It's unbelievable." 🔬

By leveraging a global talent pool, Harmony secured a $6M deep tech grant from the Brazilian government. 💰 

The result?

👉🏼 They retained their US headquarters and IP. 
👉🏼 They are launching their Gen 1 product while the grant funds their Gen 2 & 3 R&D.

Mike Wolsfeld has a completely different model in the Canadian Prairies. Mike manages the Techcom Fund at Ag-West Bio. It operates inside a nonprofit, which means its goal isn't just to extract a 10x return. Their goal is ecosystem growth. 🌍
