My ability to spot a good story is what landed me my first job in journalism. But it was my decade of profiling startups, small businesses, nonprofits and some of San Francisco’s most influential people that taught me how to tell one. 

A move into marketing and another decade dabbling in the creator economy—first with a food blog, then a motherhood magazine—taught me how to use those stories to build communities through content and collaborations.  

Now my mission is to help purpose-driven people and brands build loyal audiences who don't just want what you offer, but love what you stand for.  

Founders and business owners come to me when they need a strategic storyteller and networked creator.

In case you missed it, the New York Times conducted an experiment to test whether people prefer AI writing to human writing. The majority of readers chose AI writing.

Now, you could argue that this experiment is extremely flawed. (I would.) For starters, the samples are not comparable, and most of the human writing is plucked from a different era, which had a particular style of writing that many of us no longer like or understand. 

But, what's even more interesting (and also not surprising), is the fact that when readers were told something was generated by AI, the majority preferred the piece written by a human.

The upshot: As soon as we know something is written by a robot, we stop caring. 

While there's plenty of bad writing written by humans, the point is that simply being human and sharing your human experience might be the last competitive advantage you have. 

Especially as so many people are training themselves to think, write and edit like a generic, soulless ChatGPT output. 

Who cares if something is written by AI? 

I care. I really do care. 

There are plenty of great use cases for AI writing, including projects documents and website mockups. But if you're trying to build a relationship through your writing, then it needs to come from you.

You've been warned.

I did not touch a single blade of grass last week. But I did touch and taste hundreds (if not thousands) of new, inventive food and wellness products. 

And if I was worried about AI taking all the jobs last week, this week I’m certain that there are plenty of jobs AI could never. 

I had this revelation at Expo West—an event I joined on behalf of my lovely, pioneering, about-to-take-over-food-world client Just Date.

If you haven’t heard of Expo, it’s a massive—and I mean MASSIVE—conference that all the influencers refer to as the “Super Bowl of the food and wellness industry.” 

But to me, it felt more like the Burning Man of the food and wellness industry, where an entire city—complete with experiential exhibits that feel like you’re walking into a restaurant, a shop, a bar (even a hair salon)—is built overnight and then torn down four days later. 

It was wild. (And very filling.) 

But I had a lot of fun and learned a lot—including that to get your favorite cracker from that mom blogger you discovered on TikTok into shelves at your nearest Target, you can’t just “build a brand.” No, you need to build relationships with manufacturers, packagers, certifiers, distributors, brokers, buyers, and many more people that I’m sure I’m missing.

Yes, you must have a good product. But you also need to be damn good at talking and shaking hands. (Captivating, clear messaging helps. *Wink*)

Again, AI could never. For starters: No hands.

We, the people, are the innovators, relationship builders, deal makers, and business shakers that keep this capitalist machine moving. 

And we who spend too much time in the digital world tend to forget this. So don't worry—we're not doomed.

“Ordinary hope places our fulfillment and well-being in an imagined future beyond our control. It ignores our agency and feeds our craving. When our wished-for outcome isn’t realized, we are crushed. The endless world of fantasy can provide temporary relief in an unbearable situation, but it ultimately leaves us hollow.”

I read that this morning in a chapter of a book by Oren Jay Sofer that I picked up in one of those little neighborhood library boxes people put outside their houses.

The chapter is all about aspiration and how aspiration is distinct from expectation, fantasy, and ordinary hope.

To aspire to something is to have a kind of practical hope that gives us agency to work towards a future that could be.

Aspiration is what brings us face-to-face with our responsibilities as individuals and members of society. It forces us to question how we’re spending our limited time, energy, and attention to actively shape the future we want—not the one we’ve come to expect or even accepted.

Without aspiration, people like Susan B. Anthony would have given up.

She spent more than 50 years fighting for women’s right to vote. She was mocked, dismissed, arrested, and fined for casting a ballot in the presidential election.

And—after all of that—she died 14 years before the Nineteenth Amendment finally gave women the right to vote. 

So the future she worked her whole life to create was one she never actually got to live in.

That wasn’t ordinary hope. That was aspiration.

Like all us, I’m guilty of getting trapped inside the stories I tell myself about the future. With so much backward movement, things can feel hopeless. 

But that hopelessness is a trap. It makes us forget all the progress we’ve made and—through individual and collective action—all the progress that remains to be made to restore our sense of trust, justice, peace, love, kindness, and connection.

Aspiration asks something harder of us than hope. It forces us to not just imagine a better future, but to actively participate in making one.

I, perhaps like you, am tired. 

So maybe my first aspiration is to rest and take care of myself so I can wake up tomorrow and help tackle the things I aspire to help change in my lifetime and the generations that come after it.

I talk a lot about how to use stories to stand out. But being around a group of entrepreneurs willing to share the real stuff reminds you that stories are how we figure out where we fit in.

Because when you have the opportunity to show up and be seen as unapologetically yourself—with all your doubts and questions—you stop getting generic advice and start getting insights that you can use. 

Every year, New Narratives Club retreat attendees tell me they returned with more than notebooks full of ideas to grow their business.

They came home with real, meaningful next steps and connections that could’ve only happened because everyone showed up as their full, messy, imperfect selves.

And that’s what makes the difference.

Compelling short-form content almost always has the same structure:

Hook -> Context -> Tension -> Pivot -> Payoff.

The most important thing to know about the hook is that needs to spark either curiosity, desire or fear. (Though I hate using fear.) 

The body, meanwhile, should lead to some sort of before and after transformation—even a tiny one—and have pivot points throughout to keep your audience engaged. (But most people forget this and keep “and, and, and-ing” their story to death.)

Lastly, you need to create open loops and a payoff. People hate unresolved payoffs and want the answer. 

What’s a payoff?  I’ll tell you if you come to this live with my fellow storytellers. (See what I did there?!)

Every post you've ever written that flopped was probably missing the same thing: Story.

But "storytelling" gets thrown around like confetti on LinkedIn. Everyone talks about it. 

As a result it's become this big catch-all word - personally I'm very skeptical whenever somebody says they are a storyteller. 

Almost nobody can actually break down what makes it work.

How you build tension. How you structure beats to keep a reader locked in. How you use psychology to make someone feel something before they even realize it.
