I host the CSIRO Concept Lab, a place to reinvent how science is done through emerging technologies. Together we are developing practical techniques to nurture and amplify collective intelligence, bringing together brilliant minds to imagine and build the future of scientific discovery.

I led Product Design and Engineering for a $18M strategic program to reinvent science, bringing a dedicated band of technologists to collaborate with visionary scientists on transformative tools for thought.

Exponentially advancing technologies like collaborative intelligence, multimodal AI and spatio-temporal data exploration are transforming how science is conducted, accelerating discovery and allowing researchers to take on previously intractable problems.

In our program I had the immense pleasure of combining the skills, expertise, imaginations, and ambitions of visionary scientists, engineers, designers and product specialists to create shared visions of future digital worlds for science. Our interdisciplinary team developed those visions into concrete scenarios of the future, then took successful proofs of concept and prototypes through to active implementations to extend our powers of discovery.

Future Digital Worlds was a participatory action research program applying speculative design techniques to map out, prototype and scale a transformative vision for digital science powered by advances in AI/ML, advanced user interfaces and collaborative creativity.

I also served as an assessor for the NSW Film and Television Office (FTO)'s Digital Visual FX Traineeship scheme, in 2001, 2002 and 2005; and just once as an expert witness in a court case hinging on digital typography.

I joined the inspiring and dedicated team at CHOICE to start up their New Things lab. I see CHOICE as a knowledge organisation - moving up the stack from data, to information, to sharing knowledge and instilling wisdom. And more than that it's a powerful community of experts, members and supporters who can make real and positive change in the world.

In our first two years the New Things team shipped 16 in-market experiments. We selected the candidates with the greatest potential and traction – and over the next two years, with the help of champions from across the organisation we launched them at scale. 

Through this process we built award-winning products, seeded new lines of business and discovered a new high-growth business model that has the potential to transform the organisation while holding to its mission.

I was a member of the Advisory Committee to the Federal Government's Data Standards Body. The committee provides guidance and advice to the independent Chair on the key issues involved in the development and implementation of technical standards to support consumer data sharing, starting in the banking sector.

Incubated a new venture within CHOICE, saving Australians over $1.6M on energy bills in its first 6 months of operation. Transformer won awards for Big Data Innovation at the Australian Information Industry Association's iAwards, pioneered a new business and operational model for consumer advice in services markets, and created a new line of business now being extended and scaled through a partnership model.

I had the honour of leading a team of exceptional producers, designers, developers and storytellers for our national broadcaster. Together with collaborators both within and beyond the ABC the R&D team is inventing the future of public media, and making a place in that future for Australian stories and ideas.

To bring focus to our efforts I co-authored the ABC's experimentation and innovation strategy and ran a collaborative process to identify and address seven big shifts and grand challenges facing public media. I led ideation sessions which brought ABC staff from around the country together with representatives from our audience to generate hundreds of ideas in response, which were then expanded and focused through the expertise of the R&D team. I then worked with the ABC's strategic and executive leadership to refine these into a portfolio of high priority experimental projects across a spread of risk and focus areas.

ABC Innovation was created to "drive strategic innovation and development in content creation, audience connection and new platform distribution"​. 

I was initially contracted to lead user experience and requirements for the Localisation and Recommendations System (a circa $1 million/annum capital project), to bring the next generation of personalised media experiences to the ABC.

I went on to join the User Experience Coordination Group (which shepherds the organisation's UX and service design principles), the Information Management Advisory Group and then the Innovation and Experimentation Strategy Working Group.

From there I moved full time into innovation and experimentation strategy and prototyping, and was promoted to Creative Director R&D.

I joined the Creativity and Cognition Studios (led by Prof. Ernest Edmonds) to research design principles for mixed real/virtual environments to support distributed collaborative creativity.
In this lab I took Honours by Research, for which I was awarded the UTS University Medal. I then began PhD work, which I took up again in 2021.

During this time I lectured regularly at UTS in Digital Media Technologies, Digital Multimedia and Digital Media in Social Context, as well as giving various guest lectures, tutorials and staff seminars. While at CCS I accepted two awards, presented nine papers and invited talks, gave three demos, a poster and a workshop, chaired two international conference programmes, served on two conference juries and helped to edit two major international journals on creative technology practice.

Ping Interactive Geospatial

Chris Thorne and I founded Ping - a Virtual Earth startup company - back when that still sounded like a crazy idea. We developed Free/Open Source software and services for geospatial virtual reality, location-based services and public participatory urban planning. This software now forms part of the National Science Foundation funded X3D Earth project.

We received substantial early support from the Telstra Broadband Fund, developing solutions that we exhibited at CeBIT in Australia and SIGGRAPH in the USA.

Our clients included state departments of housing and land administration and major city councils. The software was used by virtual tourism providers, and in funded research projects at UNSW and UWA as well as the US Naval Postgraduate School. 

We continue to work on standards and platforms for the geospatial web. Mass-market virtual earth front-ends have emerged to great and well-deserved acclaim, but we have so far seen only the very edge of what is possible in this field.

Before incorporating Ping with Chris Thorne I started planet-earth as a free/open source software project. Planet-earth was a Free Software project to build a realtime, immersive, user-created map of the whole world and everything in it. It was built using VRML, Python, XML, and PostGIS/PostgreSQL.
It took inspiration from Slashdot's everything project (a predecessor to Wikipedia, which was not founded until 2001), the fictional Earth application from Neal Stephenson's Snowcrash, and Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

When I grow up / I want to be / a superorganism. 
In the meantime I help organisations face the future by building places for creative collaboration. I lead teams that apply systems, futures and design thinking to bring products and services all the way from invention through to scale.

I started out in design & technology as the Web was being born, and have over 20 years'​ leadership experience in product development and R&D labs across industry and academia, as well as for innovative startups in Sydney and Silicon Valley.

I publish and speak internationally on collaborative creativity and innovation. I've convinced boards to invest in audacious ideas and deliver killer products, built collaborations across organisations and nations, presented in the largest conference hall on earth and assembled massive, powerful creative communities.

My favourite tools: first principles, transdisciplinary curiosity, contextual enquiry, creative selection, experimental mindset, informed iteration.

Salient questions: local VS global maxima, risk of inaction and cost of delay, aggregation theory and platform economics, pervasive computing, ethics by design.

I lead creative teams by example: in 2002 I led the company that delivered the first 1cm resolution 3D earth over the web. I co-founded SIGGRAPH Asia, a major international conference on computer graphics and interactive techniques. At the ABC I co-authored the Innovation and Experimentation Strategy and broke silos to launch rule-breaking initiatives. At CHOICE I led product and service innovation to help a 60-year old institution rediscover its pioneering legacy. At CSIRO I have the honour of leading a team of engineers, designers and researchers working to reinvent science itself.

I'm not driven by a certainty that I have the answers; rather by curiosity about the questions and the delight in finding creative solutions.
