Student Development Manager

In this position, I provide coaching to targeted students to help them identify and meet their personal success goals. I meet with students individually to offer support with their transitional issues, assist students with developing their goals, identify strategies to achieve goals, and provide referrals as necessary for additional partnerships and support. Provide individual student supports by coaching students to develop resilience and improve their likelihood of retention, and enhancing their success. Develop success plans with each student that detail strategies for success and the student’s role and responsibilities in implementation of the individualized plan and in creating partnerships for implementation of those strategies. Conduct student self-assessment exercises to contribute to goal and strategy identification for students.

I meet with students individually and coach students in building partnerships for success. This position requires extensive student contact both one-one and in small groups, dynamic problem-solving, communication and collaboration with the coaching team, college faculty, support staff and administrators. 

I am also responsible for the development and implementation of a peer coaching program.

Wellness Coach

As Student Development Manager I am responsible for the college-wide strategic design, development and delivery of programs and services that assist new students with their transition to the college and continue to support students in making a successful academic and social integration to the college community throughout their student experience. This included the development and execution of virtual transition and orientation programming to support student's transition to remote learning. This also includes the faciliation of a number of virtual sessions. I was also responsible for the enhancement and development of a first-year online preparatory course - PREP 1000.

This role ensures that a variety of engagement initiatives are available to students throughout their academic career through supervision of the Student Success Intake Clerks and work-study students  with the facilitation of the Institute of Student Leadership, the Co-Curricular Recognition program and student life events.

In this role, I act as chair of the Student Conduct Committee where I oversee the selection, training and development of the Student Conduct Standing Committee, and ensure that Student Conduct hearings are administered using a transparent, fair and restorative approach. This also included the updating the Student Conduct policy.

Additionally, I oversaw the strategic design and implementation of all sexual violence education, programs and resources for the campus community; and one-on-one support for survivors who are affected by sexual violence and assisted with the updating of the Sexual Violence Policy.

Provide day to day oversight of the First People's Indigenous Centre and assist with the recruitment and selection of Indigenous Student Coach.

In this role, I was responsible for the oversight of all work-study and placement students in the Student Development Office.

Student Development Manager - maternity leave coverage

As first generation (FG) student co-ordinator, I played a lead role in the development and implementation of Durham College’s FG Student Initiative. This project was developed and implemented to address transitional issues faced by first-generation students and to promote student engagement and success.

I have had the opportunity to grow this initiative from the pilot stage of supporting 550 first-year FG students to now supporting close to 3000 FG students in various stages of their program. The e-mentoring program that I piloted for first-year FG students expanded to include all FG students and was then implemented for all first-year students.

In this role, I developed the Success Matters Workshop Series for FG students to assist with the development of key skills and the FG Student Peer Mentoring program. I was also responsible for producing a parent and family calendar to shed some light on the student experience and address transitional issues faced by students.

Advocated for growing the program to support FG students at the Whitby campus and worked to increase awareness of student support services at the Whitby campus.

Worked closely with the Office of Research Services and Innovation to conduct research on FG students. I also partnered with Durham College's Student Affairs departments, Second Careers, Student Liaisons and Communications and Marketing to design and promote services that support FG students.

Involved with the E-coaching Development Team, the Healthy Campus Task Force, and the I heart DC Committee.

This role was also responsible for updating Durham College and UOIT’s student handbooks, parent and family calendars and web pages simultaneously, the success of these projects required working with campus partners to meet tight deadlines. 

In this role, I had the opportunity to play a lead role in the development and creation of Get Prepared for September (GPS) online orientation for first-year students to navigate the steps to becoming prepared for the start of school. This online orientation went on to serve as the foundation for the current much more interactive and comprehensive site. In addition, this role was also responsible for the maintenance and updating of the Co-curricular Recognition program.

Held a variety of roles from front line employment advising to supervisory. Responsible for day-to-day operations of the YMCA’s Youth Foyer Employment Centre including staff supervision. Worked closely with local MPs on the approval of applications. Conducted employer visits to ensure that program requirements were being met.
