My friends at Coefficient Capital just dropped their annual consumer survey and one finding immediately jumped out to me. When they asked Gen Z + Millennials what their number one health concern was, the answer wasn't diet, fitness, or chronic disease. It was mental health. Their minds.
 
The more you think about it, the more it makes sense.
 
We've spent decades building this incredibly mature wellness ecosystem around the body. Sleep trackers, wearables, calorie counters, blood panels, metabolic testing, you name it. The tools to understand and optimize your physical health have never been more available. And yet the thing people are struggling with most is what's going on inside their heads. That's a pretty massive gap.
 
Our brains just weren't built for the constant flood of information and decisions hitting us every day. And when your brain gets overwhelmed, everything downstream suffers. Stress spikes, attention gets hijacked, emotional resilience drops, sleep falls apart, and poor sleep further drains the brain and the whole cycle just keeps going and it's really hard to break.
 
The pattern is so obvious and yet we've mostly just been treating symptoms. We haven't done much of anything to help people actually understand the source of what's happening in their minds so they can get to a better place.
 
I think there's a massive opportunity here, and not just with therapy or medication, but with real personal visibility into how your mind is working so you can make better decisions about how to navigate life. 

This survey is a strong signal that millions of people across two back-to-back generations already know something is off. They're just waiting for something that helps them understand why.

The best company-builders I've worked with weren't always the smartest people in the room. They just focused on the right things.
 
I've observed many different behaviors that genuinely distinguish great operators from average ones. Over the course of my career, I've had a front-row seat to decision-making inside some of the most successful consumer companies in consumer health and tech.
 
𝟭. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀.
Most operators treat every decision like it carries equal weight. Great ones don't. They've developed a calibrated filter: if a decision can be undone cheaply, they move in minutes. Slower deliberation only comes out when the stakes are permanent or costly. This alone creates months of speed advantage over a competitor who deliberates on everything.

𝟮. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗱.
Not just the headline LTV/CAC. Contribution margin by channel. Payback period by cohort. Gross margin by SKU. And they don't use this data just to report — they use it to make better brand, product, and go-to-market decisions. The best operators I've worked with carry these numbers in their head at all times.

𝟯. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗰𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻'𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴...𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁.
Underperforming SKUs. Weak channels. Hires that aren't a fit. Average operators let these things linger because of sunk cost. Great operators have internalized one rule: past investment is not a reason for future investment. The speed of the kill is one of the clearest separators I've observed between great and average. But it requires good instincts to know when something is slow to gain traction vs failing to achieve product-market fit.

𝟰. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗿𝗰 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲.
Not just the product. Not just the sale. Acquisition, onboarding, first use, habit formation, repeat purchase, advocacy. Great operators have a clear point of view on every stage. Average operators optimize the purchase moment and fail to fully understand and design for what comes after it.

𝟱. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲, 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿.
And when you hear it, you immediately think: 𝘰𝘧 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦. Not five claims and a positioning deck. One thing that is undeniably true and that they can say in a single sentence. Average operators drift into multi-claim confusion, especially under investor pressure. The great ones hold the line. Simplicity is a competitive advantage.

The common thread across all five?
 
Clarity, speed, and obsession with the customer combined with a lack of overcomplicating. 

They're clear on what matters, fast on everything else, and never let complexity creep in between.

There's a lot of anxiety about AI in workplace, and some of it is legitimate (work slop, outsourced thinking, loss of critical reasoning). But most of the negativity misses the point. AI is a tool, and like any tool, it gets used well by some people and poorly by others. Used correctly, you can move a 100x faster than before.
 
The trap I see people fall into is the dopamine hit that comes from chasing new information. AI makes it effortless to generate more research, more frameworks, more options, and that 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭𝘴 productive. It scratches something evolutionary. We're wired to hunt and gather data, and AI gives us an endless supply.
 
The problem is that information gathering can takeover without actually 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘨 anything. At some point you have to actually 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥 something, 𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱 the product, 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 something new. AI should be accelerating your ability to 𝘢𝘤𝘵, not feeding a habit of endless planning and strategizing.
 
And here's the bigger shift: in a world where information is unlimited, information itself loses its power. Knowing things is no longer the edge. What matters now is the ability to ask the right questions, filter what's relevant from a constant flood of input, and develop the judgment to act on it. 𝘋𝘪𝘴𝘤𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 is the new competitive advantage.

How do you build a product and brand that changes a category?
 
You don't start by trying to look like the category. You build what's missing in it.
 
As I think about my next role, I keep coming back to lessons from the companies I've helped build.
 
What made them a success?
 
𝗦𝗼𝗻𝗼𝘀 obsessed over every part of the customer experience (hardware, software, setup, and daily use) because people wanted music that fit their life, not a complicated mess of gear.
 
𝗢𝘂𝗿𝗮 turned complex health data into simple, clear guidance. Data only matters if people can actually use it.
 
𝗞𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺𝘀 made healthier products that patients and caregivers could trust, emphasizing honesty and proof. It led to a unicorn exit.
 
That's the playbook. Winning brands don't just make a better product. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗼𝗿𝘆.
 
Here's what I've learned from helping build brands that did exactly that:
 
𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗿, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵. New technology doesn't sell itself. If the experience isn't clear and useful right away, the science won't matter at scale.
 
𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆. New tech can be exciting, but excitement isn't enough. The best brands in health and tech take complex ideas and make them simple, then give people clear guidance in the moments that matter most.
 
𝗕𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲. Trust comes from solid research, real expertise, and showing your work. That also means being upfront about what's proven vs. what's still emerging, not just making bold claims.
 
𝗔𝗰𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿. The best brands don't just build a "better version" of something. They define a new space entirely. That takes a brand that can teach, inspire, and make something unfamiliar feel relevant and real.
 
𝗦𝘄𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀. In a new category, every touchpoint matters: onboarding, design, support, outcomes. People decide whether to trust you based on every step of the experience.
 
The companies that win long-term aren't always the ones with the best tech or the deepest pockets. They're the ones that earn trust. By being clear, honest, and obsessively focused on the person on the other side of the product. 

That's the kind of work I'm looking to do next.
