I was born in a place with limited, on-and-off electricity supply – and with limited means.

Growing up, I did a lot of reading by the light of soot-filled kerosene lanterns.

I studied hard and crushed it in school – again and again.

Eventually, I moved to the UK for grad school (UCL).

Wrote and published many research papers.

Featured in BBC News, HuffPost, and New Scientist magazine.

I've also traveled extensively; countries visited include France, Germany, Greece, Spain, and Australia.

Life is good now.

No more soot-filled lanterns on my desk.

But more importantly, I picked up a key lesson along the way: to become an excellent writer, write a lot.

So, I did exactly that.

Wrote more scientific articles. Blog posts. Screenplay. And more.

Oh, did I mention that I won Best Paper Award at the APWG Symposium on Electronic Crime Research along the way?

Nowadays, I help tech founders and executives attract followers and inbound leads on LinkedIn – via high-quality ghostwriting.

Jeremiah Onaolapo

The single most powerful skill a tech founder can build:

Turning a complex idea into a simple story.

Once upon a time when I was in grad school in London, I met an interesting French lady.

We were getting to know each other, and she asked about my work.

At the time, I was running a research experiment that involved live samples of information-stealing computer viruses.

Those computer viruses ran in isolated software appliances known as virtual machines.

Those virtual machines ran on a physical computer (a server).

(Hats off to Gianluca Stringhini and Enrico Mariconti for working with me on that wildly exciting research experiment. Excellent teamwork for the win!)

Explaining my work to the French lady was not easy at all.

I told her a virtual machine was "a computer that runs in another computer." I further explained that how computer viruses operated in virtual machines.

Explaining the experimental system felt good until...

...the expression on her face (and what she said in response to me) revealed that I had confused her COMPLETELY.

Especially the computer-in-a-computer bit.

That moment taught me the importance of clarity in tech communication.

It motivated me to learn how to make complex concepts accessible to non-technical people.

Nowadays, as a tech copywriter and marketing strategist, I help founders clarify their innovations for general audiences.

The solution?

Bridge analogies.

For instance, here's what I should have told the French lady:

* Computer virus safely boxed in a cage (where cage = virtual machine)
* The cage itself safely tucked away in a computer (where computer = server)
* We (the scientists) run experiments on the computer virus through the bars of the cage

Much clearer, right?

These days, I use bridge analogies constantly. They minimize "computer-in-a-computer" snafus when communicating with people.

And about the French lady -- well, we still had interesting moments together despite the "computer-in-a-computer" snafu haha.

To write in a tech leader's voice, I rely on a 6-step system:

(Step 3 hits like a 007 thriller)

Here's my 6-step system for writing in the "voice" of my client:

▶︎ Step 1: I interview my client during a series of fun, podcast-style interviews (recorded, transcribed).

I listen closely to how my client explains complex ideas, along with their philosophical undertones.

▶︎ Step 2: I identify my client's rhythm, cadence, and the mechanics of sentence construction they favor. 

Thus, I gauge their "verbal fingerprint."

▶︎ Step 3: This is the part that plays like a 007 thriller. 

I look at my wristwatch and carefully survey my surroundings. When the time is right, I activate the [CONFIDENTIAL WINNING FORMULA, A CLOSELY HELD NARRATIVE TRADE SECRET DEVELOPED BY ME.]

▶︎ Step 4: Using the output of [STEP 3], I build a custom Voice Style Guide for the client -- which forms the basis for how I write in the tone and cadence of the client.

▶︎ Step 5: I write. I rewrite. I rewrite again -- with the custom Voice Guide Style from Step 4 as my stylistic filter.

(See, my sense of style extends way beyond the sartorial.)

▶︎ Step 6: I send the written piece to my client for feedback. 

Per notes from my client, I edit, polish, and tune the written manuscript.
