Technical skills get you hired. 

Soft skills tell how far you'll go.

I see this play out at work all the time.
Same role. Same tools. 
Very different results.

Here’s a simple cheatsheet you can actually use at work.

1️⃣ Communication
↳ Practice active listening by paraphrasing what others say before responding in meetings.
↳ Use the "ELEVATE" framework: Explain simply, Listen actively, Validate feelings, Ask questions, Tailor message, Emphasize benefits.

2️⃣ Emotional Intelligence
↳ Pause for 5 seconds before reacting to feedback to assess your emotions.
↳ Journal daily about one interaction where you recognized and managed someone else's emotions.

3️⃣ Adaptability
↳ When facing change, list 3 ways it benefits you and one small step to start.
↳ Experiment with a new tool or process weekly, then reflect on what worked.

4️⃣ Teamwork
↳ Volunteer for cross-functional projects and offer help without being asked.
↳ Use "we" language in updates and credit others first in group successes.

5️⃣ Time Management
↳ Block your calendar with focused 90-minute deep work sessions daily.
↳ End each day by listing tomorrow's top 3 priorities and estimated times.

6️⃣ Problem-Solving
↳ Break problems into "What, Why, How" using mind maps before acting.
↳ Brainstorm 5 wild solutions first, then pick the most feasible one.

7️⃣ Leadership
↳ Delegate one task weekly to a junior colleague with clear outcomes and check-ins.
↳ Give specific, positive feedback daily to motivate your team.

8️⃣ Empathy
↳ Ask "How are you feeling about this?" in 1:1s and listen without interrupting.
↳ Mirror body language subtly in conversations to build rapport.

9️⃣ Resilience
↳ After setbacks, reframe with "What did I learn?" and one immediate recovery action.
↳ Build a "wins journal" to review weekly during tough periods.

🔟 Conflict Resolution
↳ Use "I feel... because... I need..." statements to express issues calmly.
↳ Schedule neutral third-party mediation for unresolved team disputes.

None of this sounds impressive on paper.

But this is what builds trust fast and pulls people into bigger roles.
So yes, skills get you hired.

But soft skills decide who gets trusted with more.

That’s what separates contributors from leaders.

My role focuses on improving the relevance and efficiency of the London offering by working closely with US colleagues that are keen to demonstrate a strong London market to their clients. 

In addition to supporting the development of innovative products and processes, I advise clients on their specific management, professional and cyber liability placements both in the US and internationally.

Assistant Vice President - Financial Services Group/Cyber Solutions (New York)

I design and place Commercial D&O, EPL, Crime, and PTL insurance programmes in the London market for clients retailed from Aon's North American offices.

Existing clients are both private and public, with revenues from $10m - $10bn

I have also spent time with Aon Mergers and Acquisitions Solutions in an assistant project management role. It was my responsibility to coordinate the Aon network to provide due dilligence on targets that our Private Equity clients were considering. I also assisted with the placement of several funds' GPL programmes.

My Student Bills Limited

Founded in 2009, the aim of MyStudentBills is to provide a price comparison website dedicated to the unique needs of students.  By focusing on the three areas where students pay bills (energy, broadband and insurance) MyStudentBills removes all the needless waffle attached to more mainstream websites. It also has lots of useful hints and tips to make the transition from halls to shared housing that much easier.

It was my responsibility to:

- Manage marketing relations with suppliers and clients; 
- Develop the website into a usable format;
- Control cashflow and expenditure by preparing monthly budgets;
- Create new revenue streams to ensure the longevity of the company;
- Review competitor and partner approaches;

Will is an Intangible asset specialist focussing on risk transfer and capital market solutions to support his clients’ greater reliance on intellectual property, data and reputation. 

He leads a team that helps businesses transfer the risks posed by IP infringement and IP theft, and also harnesses the power of the insurance market to enable non-dilutive IP-backed lending structures.
