Deciding to skip business school to start a gym in 2013 changed my life forever. 

Here’s what happened next: 

2013: Launched United Fitness in Huntington Beach, CA, and grew to 6 locations

2016: Founded Gym Launch and switched from privately owning gyms to doing in-person turnarounds

2017: We transitioned from in-person turnarounds to a licensing business and helped over 4500+ facilities transform their businesses.

2019: Our supplement company, Prestige Labs, launched to help those gyms create another profit center and provide their customers with high-quality nutritional products.

2020: Started ALAN, a software company that helps brick-and-mortar businesses get twice as many people in the door on average for one-third the price of a front desk admin.

2020: Founded Acquisition.com, to invest in and help grow companies. Made our first 3 investments.

2021: We sold our majority shares of ALAN to a strategic partner and a 66% stake in Gym Launch and Prestige Labs to American Pacific Group.

It’s been a ride.

Here are 8 lessons I learned that can help you: 

#1 Sell to rich people until you have the money to sell to all the poor people. The middle is where you get killed. Rich people pay for speed and convenience. 

#2 You lack priorities, not information. Problems are easy to solve if you know what you’re after. 

#3 Things are hard because your team isn’t as good as you think they are. Your standards are too low. Your best talent you have not even hired yet. 

#4 Lots of rules mean you have dumb people. The more talented and capable your people are the less structure you need in your company. Only hire people who will raise the bar of the other team members. 

#5 If you want to get bigger, get better. Better leads to growth. Bigger leads to bloat. 

#6 You work all day but you can’t get anything done because you allow too many things that don’t matter distract you. Sometimes you have to let fires burn. 

#7 Building a brand takes a long time. However, it is the most valuable thing you can own. It gives you the ability to get incredible returns on advertising. It’s difficult to imagine something better than a strong brand. It just takes time. 

#8 You need to know the inputs and outputs of your money-making system,  broken down to the absolute smallest action. That way you can scale it while sustaining your margins.

In 1999 I was a sales leader for SYSCO Denver.

I was doing pretty well, but saw that there was an imbalance.

I had the blood, sweat and tears and my managers had nice cushy offices with pictures of beach vacations.

- I was making $80k/year working 60 hours/week
- They were making $250k at 30 hours/week
- And, SYSCO was a $30B/year company

I realized then and there that I wanted a better lifestyle, so my entrepreneurial adventures began.


The path to success has never been easy. 

In 2003, after 15 years of heavy drinking, I was able to get sober.


That’s an important part of my story, because I learned that alcohol isn't the problem.

It’s what I used to cope with the REAL problem... my thinking.

If we can master our mindset, we can design a beautiful life.


I've built 2 multimillion dollar companies and managed dozens of teams.

The first was a Rare Coins and Precious Metals Company, which was my greatest teacher and changed my life forever.

It taught me that if we don’t manage our minds, life becomes very difficult.

And, even if we make some money, we’re struggling in other areas like our relationships or health.


No matter how successful we become, if we’re not masters of our minds, we’re not as successful as we could be.

I’ve coached some of the highest level leaders and entrepreneurs to master their minds, scale their businesses and build beautiful lives.


It’s never an easy process, but well worth the effort.

And, with the right guidance, it’s MUCH easier.

Most people want to be great. 
Very few decide to deliver the best. 
At anything. Every time.

Someone asked Tom Cruise what the secret was.
He didn't talk about talent. 
He didn't talk about luck or connections.
He said his goal...in any job he ever had...
was to deliver the very best at the 
highest level he possibly could.

"Even when I was a little kid."
Not when the cameras were rolling. 
Not when someone was watching. 
Any job. Every time.
That's not a talent. That's a decision.

And here's the part most people skip over... 
He said the most important thing 
is one's OWN desire.

Not the studio's expectations. 
Not what the audience demands. 
Not what critics think.
YOUR desire to be excellent.

Because external pressure will come and go. 
Awards disappear. Box office fades. 
But your personal standard? 
That's the only thing that actually 
compounds over time.

According to Gallup's 2025 State of the 
Global Workplace report, only 21% of 
employees worldwide are engaged in their work.
One in five!

Which means the bar for "best" is 
shockingly low right now.
If you actually care... 
You already have an enormous edge.

A few ways to build the Tom Cruise standard:

Set your standard before the job starts. 
Not during. Not after. 
Decide what "best" looks like before you begin.

Make excellence the habit, not the exception. 
Tom Cruise didn't deliver on big films only. 
Any job. The standard travels with you.

Own your desire - not someone else's. 
Doing it for approval is exhausting. 
Doing it because it's who you ARE is fuel.

Measure yourself against your last best. 
Not against competitors. 
Not against industry averages. 
What's the best YOU have ever done? 
Now beat that!

Never negotiate your standard under pressure. 
Deadlines will push you to cut corners. 
Budgets will tempt you to do "good enough." 
Good enough is how mediocrity wins.

The world isn't actually that competitive at the top. 
Most people opt out before they even arrive.

Tom Cruise has been delivering his absolute best 
since he was a kid cutting grass in New Jersey.
Before the Oscars. 
Before the $13 billion box office. 
Before anyone knew his name.
The standard was always the standard.

So the question isn't whether you're 
capable of great work.

The question is... Is excellence something 
you perform for others, or something you 
demand of yourself when no one's watching?
