Kia ora, I’m Milly, and I’m an early person. 

Always to my departing train, often to trends, and usually to companies. I’ve worn both the ‘founder’ hat and ‘early employee’ hat, having spent 15years carving out a career on my terms. One that looks weird on a CV but feels great on the inside.

You see, I'm a farm-gal from small-town New Zealand who decided milking cows wasn't the vibe long-term. So since 2012 I've been slowly exploring 65+ countries; leading a weird AF squiggly career path & teaching myself how to build a business on a shoestring. 

Before I turned 30, I co-owned a hostel in Thailand, co-founded a wine tour in Australia, and launched an illustration agency in the UK. 

Today you'll find me on a remote Scottish island, where I'm building Generalist World. 

Why?

Because we all get ~2000 Tuesdays in our career. 

I believe we should spend these doing the work that energizes us & creates the most positive impact (not adhering to a traditional, linear path).

1 reason why being your own boss REALLY matters*:


You get to own the most precious resource in the entire world, your time. EG:

This week, I'm moving house. IDK how I got to 34 and have only ever moved bedrooms, never the *whole* house before, but here we are lol. 

And, um, this is ALOT. Not just the stress of timing / organising / shifting everything. 

But the emotional toll - this has been my home for 5years. It's been the space where I've grown as a person the most. It's been my safe place. Where I learned to play guitar. Where I bathe under the stars in the "hot tub" (an old cast iron bathtub). Where I write poetry. Where I've read 5000 books snuggled up in bed with a tea. It's where I have a flock of wild birds. It's where I built a pond that housed tadpoles that weirdly never grew into frogs.

And, of course, it's the home I started Generalist World 🌀 from. 

Letting go of it feels like letting go a part of me. 

So honestly, thank goodness I have flexible work. I'm able to pause so I can really be here for this process. Can't imagine how awful it'd be to have to say goodbye to my home AND meet my regular KPIs for the week. 

I know this comes from a place of privilege, but I'm naming it because I want us to build a world where its not a privilege - it's just normal. 

I want EVERYONE to be able to do their best work, and it's impossible to do your best work 52 weeks of the year. 

Build for flexibility. Create a culture of compassion. Normalize time off for life's moments.

Few takeaways:

1. You'll try 50+ growth strategies and ONE will probably work. Do that one lots!
eg: the most growth we've seen by FAR is the Generalist Archetype quiz, and there's a graveyard of other experiments

2. Surprise n delight in the welcome sequence
eg: we include discounts to our fave brands like Notion, Gamma, Lovable and beehiiv. So people unexpectedly get value right off the bat.

3. Use surveys!!!!! (+ include a rant space)
eg: when someone subscribes to GW, they get sent a poll which gives us so much high quality data which we can a) use to improve the newsletter and b) gather audience demographic for sponsors

4. Polls are brilliant
eg: we use polls as an easy , automated way to gather feedback on our newsletters, and to opt out of a specific newsletter (for example: job opportunities)

5. Monetize at YOUR right time
eg: it took me 3 years before I actually started taking on newsletter sponsorship. This is really late in 'traditional' terms but it worked for us because my #1 goal was to build trust.
