A lot of intelligent, ambitious professionals keep circling the same question in their mind:
“Why don’t any of these new opportunities feel right?”

The confusing part is that nothing is inherently wrong.

The roles make sense.
The options are solid.

From the outside, any of them would be a “good move.”

And yet...none of them land.

What I see (and what I’ve lived myself) is that this kind of "stuckness" isn’t about the options at all.

It’s about the lens you’re using to evaluate them.

Most people are still deciding based on:
❌ who they’ve always been at work
❌ what they’ve been rewarded for
❌ what feels safe, impressive, or logical
❌ the track they started on 10 years ago
❌ beliefs they picked up early on and never questioned

So every option gets filtered through an outdated rulebook.
...No wonder nothing feels right.

The shift that actually changes things isn’t “finding the right answer.”

It’s slowing down enough to untangle:
👉 what actually matters to you now (not 10+ years ago)
👉 which priorities are real, and which are inherited
👉 where ego or perceived identity are driving the decision
👉 what you’re no longer willing to trade your energy or wellbeing for

That’s usually when people say things like:
“I didn’t realize that was even impacting me”
“I never questioned why I was deciding this way”
“I can see now how black-and-white my thinking has been”

And once that happens, the confusion lifts. 
Not because the decision is easy, but because it’s finally yours.

This is the deeper work I do 1:1 with corporate professionals: helping them get clear enough to move forward without forcing a dramatic change (unless they truly want to!) — and without waking up years later with regrets.

I recently finished Toxic Grit by Amanda Goetz, and it was one of those reads that made me think: Oh. That’s what I’ve been doing for years.

It’s an easy read, but not a lightweight one. Practical, clear, and surprisingly clarifying.

One concept that really stuck with me is character theory.

The idea is simple:
We’re not one fixed “self.” We’re made up of multiple characters, and depending on the chapter of life we’re in, different ones get more screen time.

Career-driven you.
Caretaker you.
Explorer you.
Responsible, reliable, keep-it-together you.

None of them are wrong.
The problem starts when one character quietly takes over the whole movie—and you forget you have a say in the casting.

I’ve heard this show up so many times in my work with clients, especially around parenthood and demanding careers:

“I guess this is just how this chapter of life is.”

It’s usually said with disappointment and a sense of powerlessness.

What this book helped me name—and what I’ve seen playing out with my clients—is that a chapter doesn’t require one character to dominate everything.

You can decide who’s center stage.
And who gets a supporting role instead of running the entire plot.

That lens is something I’ve intentionally woven into my group coaching work—not because it’s trendy, but because it gives people language for something they already feel but haven’t been able to articulate.

When you can name it, you can work with it.
When you can work with it, you get options—and a sense of empowerment again.

If you’ve been feeling like a version of you has disappeared in this “season” of life, it’s not gone.
It’s just been written out of the last few scenes.

And that is something you absolutely can change.
