The Fulbright Program

I am humbled and honored to be selected as a J. William Fulbright Scholar for 2017-18. I have been awarded a Fulbright Research & Teaching Fellowship in Vilnius, Lithuania, arriving at the end of January and running through the 1st of July, 2018. My work as a Fulbright U.S. Scholar is primarily focused at ISM University of Management and Economics in Vilnius, Lithuania.  

The Fulbright Program aims to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. It is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and Fulbright Foundation.  As a Fulbright Scholar, I join the ranks of many distinguished participants in the Program.  Since 1946, Fulbright alumni have become heads of state, judges, ambassadors, cabinet ministers, CEOs, and university presidents, as well as leading journalists, artists, scientists, and teachers. They include 58 Nobel Laureates, 82 Pulitzer Prize winners, 31 MacArthur Fellows, 16 Presidential Medal of Freedom recipients, and thousands of leaders across the private, public and non-profit sectors. 

As a Fulbright Scholar, I am pursuing a robust and rigorous research program, including exploring the antecedents of innovation within the context of emerging entrepreneurship, advising and mentoring doctoral students at ISM, and presenting a program on research methods, among others. In addition, I am leading an undergraduate course focused on the creation of new ventures, as well presenting a number of guest lectures at ISM and other locations in Lithuania. Entrepreneurship is the engine of the global economy and creativity and innovation are its fuel.  Moreover, entrepreneurship has evolved as a scholarly domain, a teaching subject, and an applied practice. It is a distinct honor and privilege to be a part of the Fulbright program and to have the opportunity to share knowledge, as well as continue my own learning journey.

Under the direction of its founder, Dr.Charles H. Matthews, the UC Center for Entrepreneurship, founded in 1997, was named one of the top 50 Entrepreneurship programs in the U.S. in 2001 (Success magazine), a top tier and nationally recognized program in 2003, 2004, 2005 (Entrepreneur magazine), and a top 25 (21) undergraduate Entrepreneurship program in 2008 (Princeton Review). The center's vision and mission is to provide a state-of-the-art entrepreneurship program not only for potential entrepreneurs, but also for people in the many organizations that interact with small, entrepreneurial and family owned businesses on a daily basis. Located in the Department of Management in the College of Business, the Entrepreneurship Center seeks collaborative efforts between students from across the University and in the Greater Cincinnati/Northern KY Entrepreneurship Ecosystem.

The E-Center’s main mission is to “…remove barriers and create gateways,” for all entrepreneurs – especially students entrepreneurs.  E-Center programs and initiatives including its Small flagship Small Business Institute® program, rigorous curriculum and competitions, among others facilitating the entrepreneurial journey.

Dr. Matthews is an internationally recognized scholar, innovative teacher, and proven leader in entrepreneurship and higher education. In 2024, the United States Assoc. for Small Business & Entrepreneurship recognized him as the Entrepreneurship Educator of the Year, only the 25th person so honored since 1992. His teaching and research span strategy; innovation;  entrepreneurship; innovation; family business; decision making, and more. He is published in: Journal of Small Business Management; Small Bus Economics; Family Bus Review, to name a few. He has been quoted in numerous publications including The Wall Street Journal, Industry Week, Forbes, and Bus. Week. A former columnist on SMEs and Entrep. for The Cincinnati Post ('98-'01), The Cincinnati Enquirer ('11-'15), and he is co-author of Innovation & Entrepreneurship (Routledge, 2015, 2e 2025).

A Fulbright Scholar in Lithuania (2018), he has taught over 10,000 students, freshmen to doctoral students to executives, including classes of 540. He has entrepreneurship and family business experience in the automotive, photographic, and real estate industries. An educational entrepreneur, he founded of the UC Center for Entrepreneurship in 1997. Under his leadership, the UC E-Center was nationally ranked (21st Princeton Review). A successful fund raiser, he secured over $2 million in endowment for E-Center programs. 

He has engaged in economic development in China, the former Soviet Union (including Russia, Latvia, and Estonia), studied at the Univ. of Antwerp, was a Malone Fellow in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, was a visiting scholar at The George Washington University and has taught at the Southwest Univ. of Fin & Econ, Chengdu, China, and Nanyang Tech Univ., Singapore. He has led numerous study abroad courses in China and the UAE and given lectures to visiting delegations from the Middle East, Russia, Africa, China, the Ukraine and more. He is a member of the Editorial Review and Advisory Boards, JSBM, ad-hoc reviewer for ET&P, JDE, and JBV. He is Past Pres & Fellow of the Small Bus. Institute®, US Assoc. for Small Bus. and Entrep (USASBE), Past Pres & Wilford White Fellow of the Int'l Council for Sm Bus (ICSB); and a Fellow of the UC Graduate School.
