We tell immigrants we need their talent.
Then we misread their respect as disengagement.


I sat down with Canadian HR Reporter this week to talk about why skilled newcomers stay silent at work. The conversation landed on something I see repeatedly in Canadian workplaces.

Many immigrants arrive from cultures where speaking up to a supervisor feels presumptuous. You work hard, deliver excellent results, and wait to be invited into opportunities. That's how you show respect.

Canadian workplaces reward self-advocacy. We expect people to raise their hands, network with strangers, and talk about their career goals. When newcomers don't, we assume they lack ambition.

The cost? Billions in underused talent. Lower retention. Shrinking productivity.

The fix starts with making our invisible norms visible. Ask your quietest team member today: "How do you prefer to share your ideas?" Then offer options like one-on-one conversations or written input.

Miguel Abascal ✨ came to Canada from Mexico with a master's degree and CEO experience. 

When promotion opportunities opened, he did what felt professionally right in his culture: delivered excellent work and waited to be noticed. He got passed over twice.

When he finally asked why, his manager was stunned. "I didn't know you were interested. I thought you would have been perfect, but you didn't say anything."

Miguel first shared this story with me on my podcast, Intercultural Insiders.  When I asked if I could feature it in my talk at TEDxQueensU, he said yes without hesitation.

Rosicler Alonzo left Toronto on one of the coldest days on record. Ice on the roads, wind cutting through everything.

A few years ago, Rosicler moved from Dominican Republic to Canada. She built KaiBiz Evolution to help small companies create the systems that give them clarity and breathing room.

I caught a cold five days before my TEDx.
The remedy I reached for could ruin my voice.


My default was DayQuil and Neocitran. They work for most people.

But for an 18-minute talk at TEDxQueensU? The antihistamines dry out vocal cords. I'd sound like gravel by minute three.

So I paused. What else is true here?

I need to recover. I need to sleep. I need to drive safely to Kingston. And I need my voice at full strength by Saturday.

One solution couldn't do all of that.

So I found a combination that could: steam sessions, steady hydration, throat lozenges without menthol, sleep aids that don't dry me out.

It's exactly what I'll be talking about on that TEDx stage. When something isn't working, we assume the problem is the person.

But sometimes the problem is the default.

The first answer isn't always the right answer. Not for cold remedies. Not for workplace culture.

What default are you working around right now?

When someone goes quiet in a meeting or conversation, my brain takes it personally. That reflex is completely human. 

It can also derail what could have been a good conversation before you even realize what happened.

The repair starts with one move: slow down. Before you act on the story your brain just wrote, pause and check it. 

My years living and working in Japan taught me that silence doesn't always mean what I think it means.

I'll share what helped me unlearn this pattern in my TEDxQueensU talk this Saturday, January 24th.

Try this: replace mind-reading with one question. "How is this landing?"
