Exhaustion makes every leader reactive.
I watched it happen in real time once.

A client — brilliant strategist, 15 years building the company, universally respected.

She called me because “something felt off.”
〰️ Her leadership wasn’t landing. 
〰️ Her team felt distant. 
〰️ Her decisions felt heavier.

She kept talking about the transformation, the pressure, the board expectations, the market demands.

After an hour, I asked one question:
“When’s the last time you slept more than five hours?”

She went silent.
She couldn’t remember.

And in that moment, it was clear:
The issue wasn’t her capability.
It was her capacity.

She’d been operating on fumes for so long that depletion became her normal.
She forgot what it felt like to lead from a full tank.

Here’s what I’ve noticed after twenty years with leaders:
Exhaustion doesn’t show up with a dramatic collapse.

It shows up in a thousand micro-reactions:
→ The midnight email that creates problems you didn’t intend

→ The decision you rush because uncertainty feels unbearable

It doesn’t matter when. It matters that you protect it like your most critical meeting. Because it is.

Why 10 minutes matters:
Not because 10 minutes fixes everything, but because 10 minutes of protected space changes everything downstream.

→ It’s the pause that lets you respond instead of react. → The reset that keeps stress from compounding into impatience or reactivity. → The quiet moment that prevents your team from absorbing pressure you haven’t processed yet.

Ten minutes sounds small. But it’s a leadership leverage point, a tiny hinge that moves the entire week.

🚩 Leaders who don’t protect capacity:

I used to think leadership was about control.

I used to think culture was something you could shape with policies and programs.
 Put the right structures in place, and culture would follow.

What I’ve learned is that culture refuses to be engineered.

Because nobody leaves a job where they are respected, well paid, and growing.

Let me tell you a story.

A friend of mine once told me he was “done” with corporate.

Burnt out.
Tired of politics.
Ready to send the legendary “I quit” email we all draft in our heads but never send. 😅

Then he joined a new company.

Same industry.
Similar role.
Same 40+ hour weeks.

But everything felt… different.

His manager actually asked:
“How do YOU want to grow this year?”

His ideas weren’t parked in a folder called ‘Nice Thoughts’.
They were implemented.

He got feedback that wasn’t a character attack.
He got paid on time… and properly.
He got promoted based on impact, not coffee chats.

One day I asked him,
“So, when are you leaving this place?”

He laughed.

“Leave? Why would I leave a place where I’m respected, well paid, and growing?”

That’s when it hit me:

Companies love to overcomplicate “retention.”

Free snacks.
Ping-pong tables.
Casual Fridays.
Motivational posters that look like they were designed by a tired intern.

But at the core, it’s simple:

🌱 Respect.
💰 Fair pay.
📈 Growth.

When people have those three, they don’t wake up scrolling job boards.

They wake up thinking,
“How can I bring my best today?”

Here’s the real problem:

Many leaders are obsessed with hiring…
while quietly neglecting the people they already have.

They blame “the job market.”
They blame “Gen Z.”
They blame “lack of loyalty.”

Meanwhile, their best people are whispering:

“I’d stay if you saw me.
I’d stay if you paid me fairly.
I’d stay if I wasn’t stuck.”


👉 What: People rarely walk away from environments where they feel valued, rewarded, and challenged.
👉 So what: If great people keep leaving, it’s not a talent problem. It’s a leadership and culture problem.
👉 Now what: Build workplaces where respect, pay, and growth are not slogans… but systems.


1️⃣ Respect:
Listen.
Don’t just tolerate voices—invite them.
Correct privately.
Praise specifically.
Treat everyone like their time matters as much as yours.

2️⃣ Well Paid:
If your people are Googling “market rate” at night…
your culture already has a crack.
Pay fairly.
Review regularly.
Stop calling underpayment “lean operations.”

3️⃣ Growing:
Give them a roadmap, not a treadmill.
Stretch assignments, not just more tasks.
Coaching, not just criticism.
Let them fail safely and learn loudly.

Because when people feel respected, well paid, and growing…

They build with you.
They protect the brand with you.
They say “we,” not “they.”

And they don’t plan their exit.
They plan the next milestone.


Most resignations are not about the company logo.

Let me tell you a story.

A team I worked with years ago in Dubai had a quiet superstar.
Sharp. Reliable. Humble.
The kind of person who held the team together without ever asking for applause.

Then came “the promotion.”

Not for her.
But for someone who mastered a different skill:

🎭 Performing.
Not leading.
Not problem-solving.
Just… performing leadership.

You know the type:
Talks big in meetings.
Takes credit in silence.
Panics in chaos.
Slides into leadership like spilled coffee—messy and unearned.

Within weeks, everything changed.

Morale dropped.
Trust drained.
Meetings went from productive to painful.

And one afternoon, she pulled me aside and whispered:

Some of us didn’t “take a break.”
We crashed.
Hard.

The plan failed.
The deal died.
The door closed.

And yet…
here you are.
Still breathing.
Still scrolling.

That alone is wild.

Let me tell you a story.

There was a season in my life where everything looked good on paper
and terrible in reality.

I had a plan that made sense.
The numbers looked right.
The pitch was clean.
The spreadsheets were behaving (which is rare). 😂

I tried.
I really tried.

Late nights.
Early mornings.
Coffee that tasted like regret.

And then…

It didn’t work.

Clients backed out.
The money didn’t land.
My confidence took the first hit.
My ego took the second.

I remember staring at the ceiling one night thinking:

“So this is it?
This is the failure they write about in books…
except I don’t feel like a hero in a comeback story.
I just feel… tired.”

For a while, I thought failure meant the story was over.

But here’s what actually happened:

The next morning, the sun came up.
Emails still arrived.
Bills still showed up on time (they NEVER fail 😅).
Life kept moving.

And painfully, slowly…
so did I.

That’s when I realized:

👉 That is life.
We tried.
We failed.
But it goes on.
Life keeps moving.
And so do we.

The problem?

We think failure is a personal earthquake
that only hit our house.

We forget everyone is carrying a quiet “it didn’t work” in their history:

– The business that never launched.
– The exam that didn’t get passed.
– The relationship that ended.
– The promotion that went to someone else.

You are not the only one standing in the ruins of “I thought this would work.”

So let’s break it down:

👉 What: Failure is not the end of your story. It’s a rough chapter with terrible lighting.
👉 So what: If you’re still here, your life didn’t end with that “no,” that loss, that mistake. It just changed direction.
👉 Now what: Stop treating this moment as your final scene. It’s just one frame in a much bigger movie.

And honestly?

Some of the most powerful people I know
don’t have smooth stories.

They have scarred stories.

They’ve gone broke.
Been embarrassed.
Been ghosted by opportunities that looked “perfect.”

But they kept moving.

Crawling counts.
Crying counts.
Pausing to breathe counts.

As long as you don’t stay permanently parked in “What if.”

You don’t have to bounce back like nothing happened.
You just have to move forward like it changed you.

Because someone needs to hear this today:

You are not behind.
You are not finished.
You are not alone.

You are in process.

Keep going.

Even if it’s small steps.
Even if no one sees it yet.
Even if you’re rebuilding from rubble.

Your future self is quietly whispering:
