There’s probably a job search analogy in there somewhere but I’ve got blisters the size of quarters and they ran out of damn medals so y’all please just BEHAVE today ok??? 😂

Look some things are hard. You won’t always get immediate gratification or results. But you did it. 

If you’re still waking up every day, doing the applications, reaching out to the networks, running towards that next job - I’m so so proud of you. Seriously.

Monday Manager Musings

Take your dang PTO. 

(I am!) 

I really thought I'd be able to drag myself into the office today 🤣 I can walk (mostly) but shoes? Not happening. I prefer being barefoot on a good day - you think I'm going to trap my feet TODAY when I've got a blister the size of a half dollar (notice it gets bigger every time I tell the story) on the inside of my heel?

ANYWAY. 

As a manager, I do not care why, when, or how you take your PTO. Give me a heads up sure - especially if you're going to be out for a while and need coverage. Mostly because I don't want to bug you when you're OOO (seriously - turn off notifications!!) 

Need a mental health reset day? Take it. 
Sick kiddo? Take it. 
Just hauled yourself 13.1 miles in drizzle two days ago and only wish you couldn't feel your legs? Take it.

PTO is there for a reason, whether it's specific or unlimited or whatever. 

TAKE IT. I'll dial in for a few important calls today but other than that? Sitting on a heating pad with my feet up, reminding my husband that I JUST RAN 13.1 MILES SIR. But only like every hour or so. I'm not THAT annoying.

Are folks saying your name in rooms you're not in? 

I talk about this with my team all the time. You WANT to build a brand/reputation that makes people remember you. (ideally, in a good way). 

Are you looking for opportunity? GREAT! Do people know what opportunity means to you? 

If YOU can't define it for your own career, how can anyone else?

ANYWAY. Brings me to my inspiration for today's post. A colleague reached out as they were opening up a couple of recruiting roles and specifically looking for current/former Amazonians who might be a fit/open to coming back. As I'm pretty darn connected on these LinkedIn streets, he trusted me to surface a few names. 

And I did. 

I immediately shot over a STELLAR former contract recruiter I had worked with. I sanity checked location for another full time recruiter who had been laid off - location worked, sent their name. THEN I got a ping from a former colleague asking me to keep them in mind for anything. Immediate note to my colleague.

Will any of those 3 folks land a role back here? I have no idea. They may not want THAT job. The HM may have other referrals that end up being a better fit. 

What I know for sure? These 3 folks were top of mind, because they bothered to stay top of mind. I have seen their work. I am connected with them here. They have put regular deposits in the old Amy Trust Bank. I was happy to make the connection.

How's your balance looking with folks who can speak up on your behalf?

I didn't want to tell this story. I hate that it actually HAPPENED. I hate that people are still falling for it. I HATE HATE HATE that the charlatans and grifters have infected my industry and convinced so many of you that this is somehow a strategy.

You can apply to a million reqs. No one is stopping you. Your resume can and likely will be seen. It will be compared to the role you applied to. If you actually watch this video and STILL think you have to beat the magic bot and/or there's no real person behind the system - I got nothing else for ya, champ.

Mike claims AI will take “most” sourcers jobs in 13 months.

I’ve been in recruiting nearly 3 decades. I’ve actually BEEN a Sourcer. Worked with thousands over the years. I have yet to meet one that ONLY does what Mike claim “most” are doing. 

$100 to the charity of your choice if you can intro me to 10 sourcers who will back him up. I’m not saying just 10 randos who agree with him. 10 sourcers who ONLY do the research, admin tasks that AI can 100% take on. 10 sourcers who’s work can be reduced to something a chatbot can do end to end, without human oversight. 

No human interaction. Just pure transaction that can be done by a tool. The 5 things Mike says “most” of you do. It’s in his post, helpfully screenshotted and shared below. 

Only 10…. this should be easy money.

Y'all have no idea how desperately I wish there was a way to answer this question.

The reality is - it's different for EVERYONE. The good news is you CAN take a few steps to figure out the right balance for YOU. 

In this week's AMA Friday I break down some specific questions to ask (and insights to understand) before you start applying. For some (like me) the answer will be just a few. For others, your volume might be significantly higher.

One story I did NOT tell in the video - way back when I was encouraged to apply to a role at WorkSource WA. I was fully qualified, former recruiters actually make pretty good career counselors, and I was initially referred by another recruiter turned counselor. 

I didn't get that job. But I didn't quit. I applied to 69 openings across several offices I could commute to. Finally landed an interview and then an offer. It made sense to apply that many times to the same organization, because they were legitimately hiring that many people - and I was fully qualified for every role.

Here's a harsh truth. If you're applying to 100s of roles a week? One of two things is happening:

1/ your market is on FIRE and there are genuinely tons of growth/opps for you (which means you SHOULD be getting a decent return on those apps!)
2/ you are completely misaligned, shooting your shot at many targets - including a bunch you're not likely to hit. 

If there's a 3rd scenario, I have no idea what it is.

Working towards an end-to-end develop-build-deploy-test system. Implemented a local NuGet package feed. Created custom NuGet packages to support internal build needs. Implemented multi-branch source control structure with full forward and reverse integration.

Implemented a custom workflow activity to override the "Update Build Number" widget in the TFS 2010 "Default Template" to use a custom build number format.  Complete C# implementation with supporting unit tests and "mocked" BuildDetail testing environment.

Recomended changes to the source control system and recommended use of branching to avoid code freezes that block developer productivity for extended periods.

Diagnosed and recommended changes to build definitions and build agent configurations that severely limited developer productivity and blocked multi-configuration buidls and the use of features like gated check-in builds and true continuous integration builds.

Creating, maintaining and improving build agents and build flavors, maintaining the build server, build tools, automation for integrating security tools in the build, integrating automation for deployment in a TFS 2008 / and soon in a TFS 2010, enabling build reporting, integrating test automation in the post-deployment, working with BGIT, emailing tasks for two big projects.

Improving the quality of our build system by writing tools, build targets , automation and deployments… checking for the bugs in the nightly build and CI, working with the dev and test team for automating more deployment tasks.

Worked on updating a WiX-based Installer.  Converted scripts based on WiX v1 and WiX v2 to version 3.

Volunteer Maintainer for a number of Ada ports.  Work entails patching the underlying port and then creating a build environment compatible with the FreeBSD Ports Tree.  Also perform frequent "world" builds to test out new patches and features and to track the -STABLE branch.

Contractor under Volt Technical Resources.  Migrated all team builds from MESE to BuildTracker.  Adapted all the Zune scripts for use with the Experiences tree.  Wrote all the scripts for the PMX tree.  Six builds with between four and seventeen variants were run in official (once per day on change), rolling (multiple times per day on change), and buddy (on demand with a user-supplied pack of changes to the enlistment to test).  Also worked on zip, MSI, and WiX build kits.  Also setup a bidirectional mirror between TFVC and Source Depot enlistments with integrations at five minute intervals across the mirrors (the mirrors were physically located in Japan and the U.S.).

Note:  Source Depot is a Microsoft licensed version of Perforce.
