One of the most interesting things AI is doing right now is quietly pushing designers and developers toward each other.

Designers can now generate code.
Developers can now generate interfaces.

At first, that sounds like a threat to both sides.
But I think it reveals something else.
A lot of the value in our work was never in just producing the artifact.

Not in the screen.
Not in the component.
Not in the code snippet.

The real value was in knowing what should exist, why it should exist, and what could go wrong when real people start using it.

That part is still hard.
AI can give you a starting point.
Sometimes a very good one.
But it does not replace taste, product thinking, or the ability to notice that something technically works while still being wrong for the user.

So when I see conversations about designers building and developers designing, I don’t really see professions collapsing.

I see the baseline changing.

The people who will stand out are probably not the ones defending the old boundaries the hardest.

They’ll be the ones who understand their own craft deeply enough to borrow from the other side without becoming shallow in both.

That is a much more interesting shift than “AI can do X now.”

The hardest part of a design system isn’t building it.

It’s staying creative inside it.

At first, design systems feel like freedom.

Everything is cleaner.
Faster.
More consistent.
Buttons are ready.
Spacing is defined.
Patterns are documented.

Then one day, you get a genuinely good idea. Something that would actually make the experience better for the user. And suddenly the design system becomes that pink character from the meme standing behind you like:

“Yeah… but we don’t have a component for that.”

That’s where the real struggle starts. Because now you have to choose:

Do I force the idea into the existing system and lose what made it good? Do I create a new pattern and make the system heavier?
Or do I spend the next hour trying to convince everyone that this is not “breaking consistency,” it’s solving a real problem?

I think a lot of designers live in that tension. A design system should give you structure. But it shouldn’t take away judgment. It should speed up the obvious things so designers have more energy for the non-obvious ones. Because real products are messy.

Users don’t behave like component libraries. Edge cases don’t care about your token setup. And the best solutions are not always the most reusable ones on the first try.

The strongest design systems I’ve seen were not rigid.
They had principles.
They had logic.

But they also had room to grow.

That’s the balance I’m always chasing:
Enough consistency to scale,
Enough flexibility to still design something smart.

The more “simple” a product feels, the more terrifying the logic behind it usually is.

A lot of design education teaches us how to design interfaces. Modern product work forces us to design systems. That gap gets bigger every year.
This Slack notification map is a great example of why. Because on paper, the problem is tiny: decide whether to notify the user. But real products never operate on paper. They operate in context. And context multiplies everything.

The message type matters.
The device matters.
User preferences matter. 
Timing matters. 
Subscription state matters. 
Presence matters. 
Overrides matter. 
History matters. 
Priority matters.

So the challenge is no longer just: what should the UI look like? It becomes:
What logic deserves to exist behind the UI? 
How do we keep that logic understandable? 
How do we keep it from collapsing under exceptions? 
How do we make it feel human instead of robotic? 
How do we make users trust it?

That last one is huge.

Because in modern products, trust is often designed through behavior, not visuals. A product that shows the right thing at the right moment feels smart. A product that interrupts at the wrong moment feels selfish. A product that ignores context feels broken. And users are incredibly sensitive to that.
So when products get more complex, I don’t think designers just need “better UX skills.”

I think we need stronger decision design. Stronger systems thinking. Better collaboration with PMs and engineers. More comfort with flows, logic trees, states, and rules.

Because the most important design choice might not be what appears on screen.

It might be whether something appears at all.

AI is changing product design in a bigger way than just adding new features. It’s changing what an interface even is.

In a lot of traditional product work, the logic feels more fixed. A user clicks something, the system responds, and our job is to make that path as clear and intuitive as possible.

With AI, that starts to shift.

Now you’re often designing around something that can respond in different ways, interpret intent differently, be useful one second and a little off the next. And that changes the role of design quite a bit.

You’re not only thinking about screens anymore. You’re thinking much more about things like:

1. trust - when users should rely on the system
2. behavior - how the product responds, not just how it looks
3. recovery - how users get back on track when AI is off

How do you help a user understand what the system is doing? How do you make it feel flexible without making it feel unpredictable? How do you show confidence without making it feel fake?

That’s the part I find the most interesting.

Because in AI products, a simple input field can become half the experience. A reply can feel like a feature. The wording of a message can matter as much as the layout around it.

I think that’s a pretty big shift for designers.

It pushes us beyond arranging components and polishing flows. We still do that, of course, but now we also have to think much more about system logic, ambiguity, edge cases, and the moments when the product is not fully certain.
Honestly, it feels like AI design is making product design broader. A bit messier too, but in a good way.

It asks designers to care more about how the system thinks, not just how the screen looks.

And the better AI products get, the more important that becomes.
