I am definitely nervous for next week. For the first time in two years I will be fully stepping away from work for a full week. 

My wife and I are headed to an island 7 miles off the coast of Belize on Saturday. No cell service and no internet. 😬

And while yes, I am very much looking forward to this time, I am also wondering what this experience will be like. 

Recently I’ve been thinking a lot about my addiction to being busy. With the advent of AI tools I haven’t gained more free time, instead I’ve just done more with that time. 

Even on weekends I have a very difficult time stepping away from doing. 

So let’s see what 7 days with nothing to keep me busy or distracted looks like. Nothing but a dive mask, a kayak and loads of fresh caught seafood. 



And don’t worry, AskBobAI is in more than capable hands while I step away. Plus let’s be honest, no one really wants to talk to a tech partner on Thanksgiving week 😂

Alot of folks don't know this about me because I largely talk about AI but my background is actually in the Mortgage Backed Securities and Due Diligence space. And oddly it is something I never seem able to let go of.  

And I have to tell you that QC Ally who acquired the long standing and reputable Due Diligence firm Inglet Blair, LLC a couple of years ago do absolutely phenomenal work. I am probably biased because Jessica Werner and I worked together for many years and she is the absolute best operator I have ever known.

Occasionally in life you have someone who shows up unexpectedly that has such a profound impact on your life that it changes your course. For me lately that person was Trish Maraski. And the impact, amongst other things, was the recommendation of the book, The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry. 

We just spent a week in Belize, 6 days of it disconnected from the world, (more on that later) and in part of that time I crushed through this book. 

It, along with our trip, truly opened my eyes to how I want to live my life going forward. And again more on that later. 

But the biggest realization was that the times where I am not proud of how I am being I am always hurrying. Trying to rush life, like it is a race to the end. 

So with all of that I am starting to implement practices that slow my life down instead of speed it up. 

The first was that we canceled all of our streaming services before we ever got back home and are spending more time reading, connecting and even just being bored. 

So thank you Trish for taking the time to impact my life the way that you did.

Knowledge workers average spending 25% of their day answering questions. At an average knowledge worker salary of $112,500 (Glassdoor) that means you’re paying $28,125 per year per employee to answer questions!! 

So a company of 200 employees that is $5,625,000 per year you’re spending just answering questions. 😱 

There are much cheaper options 😉

This is wild. Most great companies start with a brilliant insight. FedEx started with a college paper that earned a C.

Fred Smith pitched the idea of an overnight air-delivery network at Yale. His professor said the concept wasn’t feasible and graded it accordingly.

A few years later he built the company anyway… then ran out of cash so fast he flew to Vegas with FedEx’s last five thousand dollars, played blackjack, and won twenty-seven thousand. That bought him one more week of payroll.

The whole logistics empire you see today was held together by one bet, one insight, and zero permission.

Takeaway: Vision looks impossible right up until the moment someone executes it.

Be honest, how long does it take you to get back to clients, internal or external? You and I both know it isn’t fast enough. 

We live in a world where people now expect near instant answers to whatever they need. 

So why are you insisting all of those questions be answered by a human? 

Instead what if you just let a knowledge agent answer 80% to 90% of your questions, allowing your humans to focus on the questions that really matter, the ones only they can answer. 

Speed up delivery times, increase employee satisfaction, all while reducing costs.

At GWS, the sales team doubled the sales engineer generated revenue during Cory’s 3-year leadership. 
Cory reported directly to the CEO and had frequent communication with the private equity ownership.   During this role, the sales team personnel reached 30 people at its peak.
Ground Works Solutions is a contractor specializing in soil stabilization and infrastructure rehabilitation in 31 states.

Managed the Sales and Marketing field organization in the Eastern half of the United States for the Stormwater segment of Contech Engineered Solutions and reported directly to President of Stormwater.  The Stormwater segment was the highest EBITDA producing segment for Contech and accounted for +45% of the company's overall EBITDA at time of role.

Area Vice President, Stormwater - East

Product Manager for two product lines at Contech Engineered Solutions and reporting directly to President of Drainage. 
Responsibilities for both lines included P&L ownership, cross functional leadership, strategic partnerships, market analysis, portfolio positioning, corporate marketing and training.
* Initiated, executed, and launched 3 strategic partnerships
* Detention Product Line revenue closed out fiscal year almost DOUBLE compared to when started this position
* Since starting position, Detention Product Line EBITDA is +$4M greater
* Since starting position, Rolled Goods Product Line EBITDA is +$1.5M greater

Product Manager:  Detention & Rolled Goods

Account manager for our strategic partners in Europe and responsibilites included training, collaboration on market launch, and product positioning.

Europe Account Manager for Stormwater Products

Responsible for sales and marketing in CO, NE, NM, ND, and SD.   Led a team of 9 sales professionals, set strategic direction for territory, and portfolio positioning.
* Hired and trained sales professional who won FY12 Sales Engineer of Year for SouthWest Region 
* Led team to +$1.2M direct sale to wind turbine manufacturer utilizing a new product.   Largest project sale at that time for the product.
* Led strategic partnership for 5 year agreement on product usage and consideration with major customer headquartered in geography

Region Manager - Colorado, Nebraska, New Mexico, North and South Dakota

Managed a sales territory in Missouri promoting and selling the full line of CONTECH’s products.  Worked closely with engineering consultants, contractors and government officials providing engineering expertise and problem-solving.  Developed marketing strategies and customer relations for market growth.  Responsibilities also included identifying and developing all territory potential, conducting presentations, obtaining favorable specifications for products, and developing quotes and orders.
*During role, met various sales and margin goals, and grew territory to when it was split in 2006.   
*Won a national sales trip in 2004 to Ryder Cup at Oakland Hills.

A little over 11 years ago, I felt like I was on a sinking ship.

I was VP of a $120M division, managing people older than me, and I even leapfrogged my boss and was now managing him.  Plus our division was the largest profitability contributor to the almost $1B company!  

All this to say, I got a lot of visibility from the executive team.

The stress caused me to skip the gym, skip quiet time, and miss out on family time. 

Always working or thinking about work.

I was winning at work, but losing at home.

Winning on the outside, but losing on the inside.

I knew there had to be a better way!

So, I hired an executive coach and it changed my life.

I started living differently.  
My priorities changed.  
I established boundaries.

That's when I decided I had to do this for a living.
