10 Things I’ve Learned About Email Marketing in 10 Years

1. Simpler emails perform better.
2. Deliverability is everything. Nothing really matters if you're not landing in the inbox. 
3. 100 opted-in subscribers beat 10,000 who never asked to be there.
4. Always test on real mobile devices.
5. Triple-check your audience/segment before hitting send.
6. Design doesn’t matter if images don’t load.
7. A solid email template saves massive time.
8. A second set of eyes is always worth it.
9. Simple campaigns can drive serious revenue, but you also need a healthy, good-sized list and a great product. Grow that list!

This month marks exactly 10 years since I went full-time with my own email marketing business. So here's my 10-year biz anniversary post for ya...

It's been quite a journey from one client paying me $35/hour to a 4-person agency serving clients such as Postable, Sparkling Ice, Columbia University, the Arizona Super Bowl Committee and hundreds of small businesses. To becoming a Intuit Mailchimp and Klaviyo Partner to speaking at AdWeek Commerce, Litmus Live, and countless webinars. I never thought any of that would have been in my cards. 

10 years is A LOT of email campaigns. And a lot of learning what works and what doesn't work. A lot of making mistakes and trying to learn from them and just trying to do better each day. 

And after all these years of creating and designing and sending, I'm still learning about email every single day. (Like today, I learned not to base a lot of engagement segments off the holiday period...people just don't open emails as much during the holidays.)

Most importantly, I'm still loving what I do and so grateful that I stumbled on this path that gave me my dream work-life setup as a working mother.

Big thank you to my sister, Elizabeth Bogh, who helped me grow this thing and to Lauren Reichard, who is the best Project Manager anyone could hope for. I am in year 10 because of these two ladies and all they do for our clients every day.

Also, shout out to Ade Lewis, who asked me if I wanted to be a Mailchimp Partner years ago, which had a huge impact on the growth of our business. 

And here's to hoping that email and SMS won't go anywhere in the next 10!
