Advice for career coaches:
Your response is your reputation.

It's easy to fight back when you've been hurt or disrespected by a vendor, team member, or even a client.
But all it does is drag you down to the level of the offender.

I learned this the hard way with one of my first clients when I started my career coaching business.

I worked with them for months to help them land a job at a top consulting firm.

We prepped their resume. Wrote their cover letter. Practiced mock interviews.

They got the job offer.
They sent me a glowing testimonial.

Then when the final invoice came due?

They told me they could have done it without me.
Asked me not to remove their testimonial.
Told me they wouldn’t pay.
And ghosted me.

I wanted to fire back publicly.
But I didn't.

Because I realized my response would define me more than their actions ever could.

Here's what that experience taught me:

1/ Not every battle is worth fighting.
↳ I could've spent weeks going back and forth. Instead, I moved on and got more clients job offers.

2/ Bitterness is a tax on your time.
↳ Every minute spent replaying what happened is a minute stolen from building something better.

3/ Walking away isn't weakness. It's discipline.
↳ Staying calm when you've been wronged takes more strength than firing back.

4/ Your reputation is built over years, not one bad review.
↳ One person's opinion doesn't erase the results you've created.

5/ Not everyone will value what you give them.
↳ That says everything about them and nothing about your worth.

That career coaching business?
It became a multi-million dollar company serving thousands of clients per year.

So my advice to career coaches:
Stay calm, even when it's hard.
Especially when it's easier not to.
That's when it matters most.

My grandmother, a Vietnamese refugee, poured our family's savings into opening one of Atlanta's first Vietnamese nail salons more than 30 years ago.

'Big dreams don't take days off,' she'd tell me, and barely a day off did she take.

She worked 6.5 days a week:

- Opening at 7 AM
- Closing at 9 PM
- Only taking Sunday evenings off for family dinner

Even when:

- She was robbed at gunpoint
- Criminals broke in at night
- Someone set fire to her building

She'd return the next day, clean up, and get back to work.

No formal education.

No business experience.

No English training.

But she had something more valuable:

Unwavering determination.

Getting on sales calls with people who will never buy.

Every wasted call costs you more than time, it drains your energy, delays progress, and keeps you from serving the clients who actually need you.

Before anyone gets on my calendar, make sure they have a BID:

𝗗 → 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗿𝗲 - Are they actively looking for a solution?

Most coaches resist pre-qualifying because they're afraid of turning people away.

But here's what I've learned building multiple businesses coaching businesses:

The fastest path to more revenue isn't more calls, it's better calls.

When you BID before you book, you spend your time with people who are ready, willing, and aligned.

Your calendar will thank you.
Your energy will thank you.
Your bank account will thank you.

The fastest way to grow isn't working harder.
It's asking for help.

Here's the irony I see with coaches all the time:

We ask our clients to trust us with their careers, their businesses, their futures.

But when it comes to our own growth?

We try to figure it out alone.

I used to do the same thing.

Growing up, I thought asking for help meant I wasn't smart enough.

That I should be able to figure it out on my own.

Then I applied to Harvard.

I was a kid from the worst school district in America with no college counselors, no SAT prep, and no one in my family who had ever been to college.

I cold-emailed Harvard students asking them to review my essays.

Complete strangers.

They had no reason to help me.

But they did.

Their feedback changed everything.

With their help I got into Harvard.

That single decision to ask for help changed the trajectory of my life.

Here's what I've learned since:

1/ If you don't ask, the answer is already no.
↳ The worst thing someone can say is no. You're already there.

2/ The fastest path forward isn't more effort - it’s a better path.
↳ Find someone who's already where you want to be and borrow their judgment.

3/ Asking for help isn't weakness. It's a shortcut.
↳ Why spend years figuring out what someone can teach you in hours?

4/ The people at the top are usually the most willing to help.
↳ Those who've made it remember what it took to get there.

5/ Your ego is the most expensive thing you own.
↳ Every month you delay asking costs you time, money, and momentum.

As coaches, we tell our clients to invest in themselves.

To trust the process.

To ask for support.

We need to do the same.

Three traits of a great coaching business:

Miss one and you are one month away from shutting down.

You have a bad brand and burnout. Clients churn, refund requests pile up, and your reputation takes hits making it harder and harder to get more clients.

→ 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀 + 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗻𝗼 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘀?
You run into low revenue. Your current clients are thriving, but you aren’t sure where the next client is coming from.

People are interested, your methods work, but you can't close. Looking at your bank account gives you emotional whiplash. 

Most coaching businesses I work with aren’t broken; they’re just missing one piece.

The fix isn't to work harder on everything.

It's to identify which of the three is the weakest link and focus there.

Ask yourself:

→ Am I attracting enough of the right people? (Leads)
→ Am I converting interest into paying clients? (Sales)
→ Am I delivering outcomes worth talking about? (Results)

More certifications won't fix a lead generation problem.

Yet I see coaches make this mistake all the time.

They feel stuck in their business.

So they do what feels comfortable instead of what actually moves the needle.

Here's what it looks like:

❌ No leads? → Gets another certification.

❌ Leads but no sales? → Builds a new website.

❌ Sales but clients aren't getting results? → Runs more ads.

❌ Operations are breaking? → Tries to close more deals.

Every problem has a specific solution.

But we avoid the real fix because it feels uncomfortable.

❌ The coach who needs to do more marketing hides behind "perfecting" their offer.

❌ The coach who needs to fire an underperformer gives them yet another chance.

❌ The coach who needs to raise prices keeps discounting to "stay competitive."

Here's the truth:

Your business is a chain and your chain is only as strong as the weakest link.

And working on the wrong link doesn't make the chain stronger.

It just keeps you busy while you stay stuck.

The four links that matter:

1/ Lead Generation → Are enough people finding out about you?

2/ Sales → Are you converting interest into paying clients?

3/ Delivery → Are your clients getting the results you promised?

4/ Operations → Can your business run without you in every decision?

Diagnose the real problem first.

Then fix that and only that until it's solved.

You don’t grow by just looking busier.

But by finally working on the one thing they'd been avoiding.
