I’ve Built Multiple 7- and 8-Figure Career Coaching Businesses. Now I Help Other Coaches Do The Same Without the Burnout.

Gratitude is the Most Underrated Trait.

People talk a lot about work ethic, ambition, and drive. I do too.

But the truth is, the reason I’m able to maintain my work ethic, ambition, and drive is because of gratitude.

It’s the foundation everything else stands on.

One moment that shaped this for me was when I was 13.

We were living in a rented home in a school district that had lost its accreditation.

Some nights we didn’t have electricity, but I still stared toward where my Harvard poster hung on the wall.

Instead of asking “why is this happening to me?”, I learned to ask:

“What can I do with what I do have?”

And I was grateful for what I did have:

→ A library card that lets me check out books

→ Teachers who believed in me and stayed after school to help me

→ Strangers who donated money so I could compete in academic competitions

That gratitude fueled the work.

It pushed me to study harder, apply to over 200 scholarships, and eventually earn over $1 million in funding to attend Yale and Harvard.

Years later, gratitude shaped my life again.

In 2017, my family received a $21,000 medical bill we couldn’t afford.

It would have been easy to panic or feel defeated, but I returned to that same question:

“What can I do with what I do have?”

And again, I found things to be grateful for:

1/ Weekends I could use to figure out a solution

2/ Access to the internet

3/ Experience with writing resumes

I used those three assets to start a weekend business helping people with their resumes and job interviews.

What began as a small way to clear the debt eventually grew into a multi-million dollar career coaching business.

Gratitude didn’t make my challenges easier.

But it made my foundation stronger.

Because when you’re grateful, obstacles don’t feel as heavy. They feel like opportunities to prove who you can become.

And that mindset has changed my entire life.

While it’s Thanksgiving weekend, you don’t need a holiday to practice gratitude. You can choose it every day.

Growing up, Thanksgiving was different in my house.

We didn't have money for fancy food.

We didn't have a big table to sit at.

We didn't even have enough chairs.

But we had each other.

My family sat on the floor and shared whatever food we could afford.

And for one day, everyone was home.

My grandparents didn't have to leave for work at 7 AM.

My uncles and aunts didn't work their double shifts.

My cousins and I were out of school.

For 24 hours, we were just together.

Those moments taught me that

Having enough isn't about having everything.

It's about appreciating what you have.

My family immigrated to the U.S. with nothing.

They worked jobs others wouldn't take.

They built a life, one day at a time.

They showed me that even when you have little, you can still give thanks.

Today, life looks different for me.

But Thanksgiving still brings me back to those simple moments on the floor.

To be grateful for what I have, not what I still feel I lack.

This Thanksgiving, I'm grateful for:

1/ The family that showed me that perseverance overcomes poverty

2/ The mentors who helped me when I had nothing to offer in return

3/ The clients who trust me to help them transform their lives

4/ The opportunity to give back and create opportunities for others

I hope wherever you are, you can find something to be grateful for as well.

Tomorrow begins the holiday season for many of us.

Each year around this time, I remind myself of two truths:

Someone I know is preparing for their first holiday without a husband, wife, father, mother, son, or daughter.

And someone else is celebrating what they know will be their last.

I still remember both of those feelings, celebrating my final holiday with my aunt, and the next one without her.
So as everyone rushes home this week, I remind myself to be kind.

That person who cuts me off in traffic?
They might be racing to see someone for the last time.

That person holding up the security line?
They might be facing their first holiday alone.

Whenever I start to get impatient, I tell myself:
"Davis, if someone seems short, distracted, or in a hurry today, assume the best. They might be carrying more than you know."

Here's what I try to do:
1/ Give a smile
2/ Give patience
3/ Give kindness

And if I can't give any of that…

Just don't give anyone a hard time.

Your marketing channel doesn't matter if no one's there.

I see this mistake all the time:

Career coaches spending hours crafting perfect LinkedIn posts...
When their ideal clients are scrolling IG.

Business owners mastering Instagram Reels...
When their buyers are reading industry newsletters.

The best marketing channel isn't the one everyone says you "should" use.

It's the intersection of three things:

1/ Where your ideal clients actually are
↳ Not where you wish they were.

2/ Where you can consistently show up
↳ Consistency beats perfection every time.

3/ Where you have a natural strength
↳ Play to your strengths, not against them.

You could be the best copywriter at a newspaper.

But if you're trying to reach Gen Z?

Good luck.
