A PhD who spent 6 years designing experiments, analyzing complex datasets, and presenting findings to skeptical committees has that experience.

They just didn’t do it inside your building.

The work is real. The skills transfer. The titles are the only thing missing.

Please write job descriptions for what you actually need, not for a vague (and often meaningless) criteria.

PhDs: Here's how to write resume bullet points that actually get you interviews.

Most resume bullets I see from PhDs describe what they did:

"Conducted analysis of gene expression data."

That tells me the activity. It doesn't tell me the impact.

Here's a simple framework that works:

Action + Method + Result

"Developed a gene expression analysis pipeline (R, Python) that reduced data processing time by 40%, accelerating publication timelines for 3 concurrent studies."

Same work. Completely different signal.

A few rules:

1️⃣ Start with a strong action verb: "Developed," "Designed," "Led," "Built" 
2️⃣ Include the method, tool, or skill you used 
3️⃣ End with the outcome. Quantify if possible.
I
f you can't quantify, state the benefit: "...enabling faster decision-making for the research team."

Keep each bullet under 2 lines. If it takes more, you're probably including too much detail.

Leave room for the interviewer to be curious. That's what gets you into the room.

Nobody told me that getting a PhD would feel like being paid in pennies to have an existential crisis every single day. 🎓

Let me be real with you.

I've supervised PhDs over the years. And the ones who struggle the most aren't the ones who weren't warned.

So here's the warning I wish someone had given me and every student I've ever mentored.

The PhD experience nobody posts about:
✅ You will spend 6 months on an experiment that leads nowhere. 
✅ Your supervisor will give you two-line feedback on a chapter you bled over for three months. 
✅ You'll go to a conference, hear someone present your idea, and panic. 
✅ You'll have days where you genuinely cannot remember why you started this journey.

And the loneliest part? 
Everyone around you will look like they have it together.

My take on how you can survive:

1. Shrink the goal, daily. 
Stop staring at "finish the thesis." 
Ask yourself one question every morning: "What is the ONE thing I can finish today?" 
A paragraph. One analysis.
Done is better than perfect and every single time.

2. Your supervisor is not your therapist, build your circle. 
Find 2-3 fellow PhD students you can be brutally honest with. 
Not to vent endlessly, but to reality-check. 

3. Protect your mornings like they're sacred. 
The world will eat your day alive if you let it. 
Your deepest thinking happens in the first 90 minutes after you wake up. Guard that window. No emails. No Slack. No social media. 
Just your work.

4. Write ugly first drafts, always. 
Writer's block in academia is almost always perfectionism in disguise. 
Give yourself permission to write badly. A messy draft you can fix. A blank page you cannot.

5. Celebrate micro-wins, seriously. 
Submitted a paper? Celebrate. Survived a brutal seminar? Celebrate. Understood a concept that stumped you for weeks? Celebrate. 
Your brain needs proof that progress is happening, even when the finish line feels invisible.

6. Detach your identity from your research. 
This one is hard. But your paper getting rejected is NOT you getting rejected. Your methodology being questioned is NOT your intelligence being questioned. 
The work is the work. You are more than it.

7. Move your body. Non-negotiable. 
30 minutes of walking has saved more PhD students from burnout than any productivity app ever will. 
The brain solves problems when the body is in motion. 

The truth about finishing a PhD?It's about being the one who keeps showing up on the days it's exciting, and especially on the days it absolutely isn't.

To every PhD student reading this, you're not behind. You're not broken. You're just in the middle of something hard.

Plagiarism is rarely about “copying on purpose.”

Most of the time, it happens because of poor note-keeping, rushed writing, or not understanding how to paraphrase properly.

Since I’m sharing this infographic on plagiarism detection tools, let me add something important:

Tools detect. You prevent.

Here are a few ways you can prevent Plagiarism:
1️⃣ Separate reading notes from writing drafts.
When you take notes, clearly mark what is a direct quote and what is your own interpretation. Confusion here is where most accidental plagiarism starts.

2️⃣ Paraphrase with understanding, not synonyms.
If you cannot explain the idea without looking at the source, you haven’t understood it yet. Close the paper. Write from memory. Then check accuracy.

3️⃣ Cite early, not at the end.
Don’t wait until the final draft to add references. Insert citations while writing. It saves you from guesswork later.

4️⃣ Synthesize, don’t summarize paper by paper.
Strong academic writing compares, contrasts, and integrates studies. If your paragraph reads like “Author A said… Author B said…”, you need deeper synthesis.

5️⃣ Use plagiarism checkers as a quality check, not a rescue tool.
Run them before submission. But remember: a low similarity score does not automatically mean strong scholarship.

Build a clean research workflow and plagiarism becomes much less likely.

Nobody warned me that a PhD would turn me into someone who spends 20 minutes choosing between 'however' and 'nevertheless' 🤣 

Yesterday I spent 3 hours on one paragraph.

Not three hours writing it.

Three hours *earning* it.

I stared at the opening sentence until it stopped making sense. Rewrote it six times. Convinced myself my entire argument was unoriginal. Googled two papers I'd already read. Made tea. Came back. Deleted everything.

And then, finally one paragraph that actually said something.

This is the part of academic writing nobody posts about.

The iceberg beneath "I wrote today" looks like:
→ Questioning whether your argument is even original
→ Overthinking a single word for 20 minutes
→ Realising the paragraph says nothing and starting over
→ Tightening, rephrasing, removing, aligning
→ And yes… questioning your life choices somewhere in the middle

After years of writing (and suffering through this process), here's what actually helps:

𝟭. 𝗪𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘂𝗴𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁
Your first draft isn't supposed to be good. It's supposed to exist. 
Get the idea down before your inner critic shows up for work.

𝟮. 𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵 = 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮
If you can't say what your paragraph is about in one sentence, it's doing too much. 
Split it. Simplify it. Be ruthless.

𝟯. 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗶𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗹𝗼𝘂𝗱
Awkward phrasing hides on a screen. Your ears catch what your eyes miss. 
If you stumble reading it, your reader will too.

𝟰. 𝗘𝗱𝗶𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗮 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗱𝗮𝘆
You can't edit what you just wrote. Your brain autocorrects your own mistakes. 
Sleep on it. Come back fresh.

𝟱. 𝗔𝘀𝗸: 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴?
After every draft, ask yourself: if a smart friend read this, what would they take away? If the answer is "not much" that's your edit.

If you've been sitting with one paragraph all week, you're not failing.

You're doing the actual work.

The messy, invisible, necessary work that never makes it into anyone's highlight reel.

Keep going. That paragraph matters more than you think.

How to use Claude for Academic research 
PhD students.... Here's a complete research workflow using Claude 👇 

STEP 1 — CREATE A RESEARCH PROJECT AS YOUR HOME BASE
→ Go to Projects and create one per thesis chapter or paper topic (free plan gives you up to 5) 
→ Upload your foundational PDFs, draft documents, and datasets 
→ Set a permanent instruction: "Act as a rigorous academic supervisor. Flag uncertain claims. Maintain scholarly tone throughout."
Every conversation inside that project now has your materials and rules baked in with no re-explaining your context ever again.

STEP 2 — UPLOAD AND INTERROGATE YOUR PAPERS
The free plan supports PDF, DOCX, CSV, TXT and more, uploaded directly into chat.
→ Upload your own draft: "Identify the gaps in my literature review compared to these uploaded sources"

STEP 3 — USE WEB SEARCH FOR LIVE SOURCE DISCOVERY
Toggle on the search icon before typing your query.
→ "Find recent peer-reviewed studies on microplastics and cognitive development published after 2021" 
Use this as a first-pass discovery tool, then verify through Scopus or Web of Science before finalising citations.

STEP 4 — CONNECT YOUR EXISTING RESEARCH TOOLS
Connectors let Claude access your apps and services, retrieve your data, and take actions within connected services. 
Go to Customize → Connectors to set them up.
Google Drive & Docs
Gmail & Google Calendar
Notion
Slack 
Gamma
Zapier 
Instead of simply supplying text to be copied elsewhere, Claude can use Connectors to work inside the tools people already rely on. 

STEP 5 — BUILD SKILLS FOR REPEATABLE ACADEMIC WORKFLOWS
Skills are reusable instruction sets that teach Claude to do specific tasks consistently, every single time.
→ Go to customize → Skills and enable built-in options 
→ Or build your own. 
For example, a peer review workflow that always checks methodology gaps, sample size, and statistical rigour 
→ Once saved, Claude automatically invokes the right skill when the task matches, no re-prompting needed

STEP 6 — VISUALISE YOUR FINDINGS WITH ARTIFACTS
Don't just read your synthesis, map it visually.
→ "Build a visual table comparing the research methodologies of these 6 papers" 
Artifacts opens a live interactive panel, no coding needed, results in under 60 seconds. 

Always manually verify your final citation list. 
Claude uses web search, not a curated academic database. 
It can occasionally surface unverifiable references.

Most PhD students I know are using AI tools daily.
Very few were ever taught how to use them well.

That's not a criticism. It's just a gap nobody really addressed formally. 

You learn by doing, by trial and error, and sometimes by producing outputs that look convincing but fall apart under scrutiny.

Anthropic's free course platform is one of the more serious attempts I've seen to close that gap.

What makes it useful is focus on things that actually matter in academic work:
— Understanding why a model responds the way it does, not just accepting the output 
— Building prompts that are methodologically sound, not just "good enough" 
— Evaluating AI outputs critically — the same way you'd evaluate any source

Worth noting: the foundational AI literacy courses were co-developed with university professors and released under Creative Commons. 
Any institution can adapt them. 

📌 Why should researchers and students care?

✅ It's completely free: no credit card, no subscription 
✅ Self-paced: work around your seminar schedule 
✅ Earn official certificates to add to your LinkedIn or CV 
✅ Built with input from academic institutions, not just Silicon Valley engineers

We are at a moment where who gets AI skills will shape who leads in every field. 

Platforms like this are closing that gap and I think that matters enormously.

None of this replaces domain expertise. 
But if your research group is integrating AI tools without a shared understanding of how they work, that's a real methodological risk.
