Behavioral and Neural Sciences Doctoral Program, Systems Neuroscience and Electrophysiology- Dr. Denis Paré laboratory

Investigating the origin, propagation, and coding properties of neuronal synchronization generated by the insular cortex in response to salient events. This research informs possible novel therapeutic interventions such as transcranial or deep brain stimulation for treating psychotic and non-psychotic psychiatric disorders.

National Science Foundation, Summer Research Experiences For Undergraduates In Neuroscience- Dr. Zezong Gu laboratory

Assessed neuropathic pain in a spinal cord injury-induced rodent model, which allows us to further understand neuropathology and features of neurological diseases. We were able to identify potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets to treat neuropathic pain such as medicinal botanicals which mitigate nitrosative/oxidative stress and inflammatory responses in neurons and glial cells, as well as protect the brain against cerebral ischemic injury.

A Smoke Free Paso Del Norte - Paso del Norte Health Foundation
 
Organized Paso del Norte Tobacco Control Network meetings, disseminated clinical toolkits, participated in community health fairs, and conducted literature reviews for youth prevention and adult smoking cessation. This work disseminated important information to the public to better inform the Paso del Norte region on the negative effects of nicotine-based smoking or vaping on brain health and its addictive properties. We aimed at promoting health, preventing disease, eliminating secondhand smoke exposure, promoting and assisting tobacco users in quitting, preventing the initiation of tobacco use, and identifying and eliminating tobacco-related disparities amongst the Hispanic community.

National Science Foundation, Physiology and Neurobiology Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates Program- Dr. John Salamone laboratory 

Investigated treatments for the motivational deficits expressed in depression through pharmacological agents enhancing dopamine transmission. This contributed to research on the psychopharmacology, drug development, neurochemistry, signal transduction, and behaviors associated with Parkinson’s disease, depression, and schizophrenia.

Behavioral and Brain Plasticity Research- Dr. Edward Castañeda laboratory

Investigated presynaptic mechanisms involving neurotransmission and behavioral changes related to substance abuse. We investigated how these mechanisms play a role in the sensitization of amphetamine-evoked dopamine release by repeated exposure to stimulant drugs. This research helped provide insights regarding drug craving and recidivism in recovering addicts.

Neuroscience PhD Candidate at Rutgers University - Newark

I am a neuroscience PhD with expertise in the areas of addiction, motivational aspects of depression, pain and spinal cord injury, emotional learning and memory, and more recently have investigated how our brains perceive important information. I enjoy teaching and have earned a credential in "Advanced Effective College Instruction" by the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE) and the American Council on Education (ACE). I am fluent in Spanish and currently learning American Sign Language (ASL). My aim is to pursue a career as a neuroscience MSL in order to facilitate communication between scientists and health-care professionals, as well as improve pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or medical devices for patient care.
