I've enjoyed a challenging and rewarding sales career, starting as a hungry young rep and working my way up to leadership roles at an industry leading events company. Along the way, I've sold to leaders in diverse industries such as pharma, manufacturing, and tech.

Now, I'm an Enterprise AE in the EMEA Cybersecurity practice at the world’s leading Business & Technology Insights firm, Gartner. 

Working with industry and thought leading technology solution providers, Gartner analysts and our end-user client base to create relevant research-led, role based platforms for engagement and networking to build strategic, long-term relationships and enable them to make better, informed decisions leading to positive outcomes on their mission-critical priorities.

The posts. The targets. The instagram story from presidents club,
dust.

Your screenshots, your selfies, your self,
slowly removed from the server of life.

So the real question:

do you want to play this like grinding is the only god? like material wealth is the finish line?

when somewhere, right now, someone just wants you to pop over.

there's a walk with an old friend that could make you feel whole.

a view that exists only for you, not your followers.

the game doesn't end when you win.
it ends when you log out.
and you will log out.

so how do you want to spend your credits.

Every single morning I get strangled and I enjoy it ...

Jiu Jitsu is autocorrect for the ego.

Nothing tells you you're making progress one day and then rips it up the next like it.

Nothing puts you immediately in your body, breath and exhaustion like it.

Nothing makes an objection feel like nothing or a business curveball bounce off you.

My days used to be so stressful until I started getting choked.

I offered our first hire beer and pizza to come and work for us...

When we made our first hires I had nothing to offer.

I was struggling with how to support my family and invest into the business at the same time.

Every other business at the recruitment day had the lot.

Holiday incentives. Boozy Thursdays. Pickle a relative. You name it.

When it came to my turn I basically said: 

"We don't have any of that, but we're one of the best places to work if you're a salesperson who wants to be able to sell in any sector to any ICP. 

Oh and unlimited holidays."

Did those people stay forever? 

No. It's sales. Nobody does.

But we want every person who comes through the door to leave better than they arrived. 

Which, if you think about it, is a better incentive than a Thursday Sambuca.

Don't start the business.

The market is too crowded.
You don't have enough money.
You don't have enough time.
You need more experience first.
Wait until the kids are older.
Wait until the economy is better.
Wait until you're ready.

You're not ready.

Nobody is.

The whole thing might fail. 

But if it all went wrong tomorrow, genuinely wrong, what's the worst that happens?

Can you give the new lad some encouragement?

I've watched companies burn through 3 sales teams in 2 years.

Every time, the recipe was exactly the same:

1. Hire the undermotivated, underpaid graduates
2. Drop £50k+ on a CRM they'll never fully use
3. Give them two weeks of product training. Zero sales training.
4. Breathe down their necks until the good ones leave
5. Blame the market. Start over.

The same businesses who run like this tell me.

It started with not urinating until I closed.

I’d stare at the pipeline with my legs crossed and say,

The best personal brand you can build is being genuinely excellent at what you do. 

Everything else is just a rented Lamborghini.

And our answer is always a little unsatisfying.

"Sort of..."

We never wanted a list of questions in front of us. We wanted something better, more of a map of the talking points we actually care about.

Enough direction to have a destination. Enough space to get lost along the way.

That means training two muscles that I actually rely on in day to day business:

→ Intrigue, the ability to find the real depth of a problem, solution, story or person.
→ Improvisation, the ability to go wherever that takes you

A question list gives you safety.

Curiosity gives you a conversation worth listening to.
