2022: posted on LinkedIn and hoped it would lead somewhere.

One of the most dangerous places to sit in your career right now?

Being good at something you’ve outgrown.

It sounds stable and even successful.

You’re competent, reliable, and experienced.

The problem? The longer you stay in something that drains you, the more your energy, curiosity, and performance decline. Eventually, you’re not just disengaged… you’re rusty. You’ve stopped growing. You’ve looped into a phase where skills slip and the interest is gone.

I’ve seen this play out over and over with clients.

High performers. Smart operators. Strong reputations.

From the outside, everything looks solid.

On the inside, something has shifted.

This is the beginning of the Career U-Turn doom loop.

A subtle trap that can lead you from mastery… to stagnation.

Here’s how it happens:

Quadrant 2: growth + energy

You like what you do. You’re good at it. You’re learning.
Your capability and confidence are compounding.
This is alignment in motion.

Quadrant 3: competent but disconnected

You’re still good at it but you no longer enjoy it.
You’ve stopped stretching.
You’re operating from repetition, not growth.
You can do the job almost automatically.

In addition, it feels safe, pays well and familiar.
So you stay.

Quadrant 4: stagnation

Stay too long in Quadrant 3 and something changes.

Curiosity declines while skill expansion slows.
Your thinking narrows and energy drops.

And here’s what many professionals and leaders underestimate:

In the age of AI, stagnant skills decay faster.

AI is accelerating productivity and roles are being redesigned.

Value is shifting toward strategic thinking, systems awareness, commercial insight, and adaptability.

If your capability isn’t evolving, your relevance isn’t either.

Being “good” at yesterday’s role is no longer protection.

It also involves:

• Staying commercially relevant
• Building adjacent and future-facing skills
• Increasing strategic depth
• Positioning for where the market is moving
• Managing energy as intentionally as time

The longer someone stays in Quadrant 3, the harder the pivot can feel.

Confidence erodes and narrative clarity blurs.

In addition market positioning weakens.

And then the U-turn feels bigger than it needed to be.

A useful self-check:

Are you still expanding your edge…
or simply maintaining what you mastered years ago?

Quadrant 3 is great feedback to start the change.

And in a rapidly shifting market, early awareness is the real career advantage.

The goal? Keep moving between quadrants 1 and 2 
- Keep learning
- Keep liking what you do
- Keep evolving, even as you master. 

If you don’t act in Quadrant 3, you’ll slide into Quadrant 4. 

This is one tool I use with clients to help them navigate career fulfillment, alignment, and growth - before the U-turn costs them their confidence.

We’re now into the 11th day of the Year of the Fire Horse. The 2026 Lunar New Year season began on 17 February and continues for 15 days through to the Lantern Festival on 3 March.

Lunar New Year has always felt like a season of renewal for me. Growing up, it meant red envelopes, family gatherings, traditional food, laughter, respectful rituals and reminders to honour your elders and carry yourself with intention.

After taking almost a full month off in January, I’ve been reflecting more deeply on what this year symbolises personally and professionally.

Fire brings intensity and illumination while the Horse represents movement, independence and bold forward motion. 

Combined, they don’t signal chaos or speed for the sake of it.

They signal a year where clarity is tested, where hesitation becomes costly and where those who move deliberately create advantage.

Your Strategic Career Reinvention for 2026 in the Year of the Fire Horse

Most people think career development starts with updating their CV.

It doesn’t.

It starts with better questions.

Over the years, I’ve found that sustainable career growth comes back to four simple but powerful pillars:

1️⃣ Who am I?
Before you chase the next title, get clear on identity.

·      What do I enjoy most?
·      What do I want more of… and less of?
·      What are my work and life priorities now (not five years ago)?

At senior levels, misalignment isn’t about skill. It’s about values, energy and identity. 

Clarity here isn’t about passion, it’s about alignment. If you don’t define this, you’ll default to roles that look good on paper but feel wrong in practice.

2️⃣ Where am I?
Clarity requires honesty.

·      Where is my career today?
·      Is this culture truly a fit?
·      What am I known for and is that what I want to be known for?

And importantly: is that reputation aligned with where the market is heading?

Your reputation is your career currency. If your positioning is outdated, no amount of hard work will fix it.

3️⃣ Where do I want to go?
This is where strategy enters.

·      What’s changing in my industry or function?
·      What trends could impact my relevance?
·      What capabilities are becoming more valuable or less?

The market doesn’t reward effort. It rewards relevance.

Decision cycles are shrinking. Industries are evolving faster than ever. The professionals who thrive are the ones who anticipate shifts not react to them.

4️⃣ How will I get there?
This is where most people stall.

·      Who can support or challenge me?
·      What relationships need to be strengthened?
·      What is my concrete plan to build the right skills and experiences?

Visibility is not accidental. Progress at this level is engineered.

Career development isn’t linear anymore.

It’s layered, intentional and strategic.

And it requires you to think like the CEO of your own career.
