My colleague Ziemek Bućko did a fantastic job analyzing 31 million emails and pulling this report together. I went through the findings and pulled the 14 stats that actually move the needle.

Some of these surprised me:
→ Turning off open tracking increases reply rates by 68% 
→ Emailing 21–50 people outperforms blasting 500+ by 158%

Messaging Madness 2026 is officially back. 🎉

Last year, we launched an experiment: a bracket-style tournament to find the world’s best outreach. We saw thousands of votes and one undeniable truth: the "spray and pray" era is dead.

This year, the stakes are higher, the scenarios are tougher, and the philosophy has shifted.

From "Cold" to "Outreach"

In 2025, we called it a cold email competition. We were wrong.

Looking at the winning entries, none of them felt "cold." When you research a prospect and understand their pain so deeply that your message lands at the exact right moment, that’s not an intrusion. That’s a solution.

The theme for 2026: 

Turning a cold lead into a warm conversation through human-to-human connection.

How the Messaging Madness works:

What we learned from the 2025 winners (@anne kar:

If you're having a hard time finding relevant domains in your niche on Ahrefs, try this instead:

Use a long tail search around your primary keyword (e.g. if you're targeting "write linkedin posts", you can do "how to write linkedin posts that generate leads and inbound messages")

Install Ahrefs Chrome Extension, it will give you the metrics right on the Google SERPs.

Skip the first few pages and go from pages 3–15. That eliminates all the high authority domains like LinkedIn, Reddit, etc. that typically rank for that keyword (see screenshot below). 

It's also much easier to navigate normal Google Search than to guess what next keyword you should manually search on Ahrefs Keyword Explorer.

You can probably find 50 new domains easily in 10 minutes. I've tried using Claude to try to do this at scale but poor results so far. I'm sure with enough prompting and context, you can automate the entire process of finding relevant and prospective domains. Going to try to figure it out this weekend and see if it's possible.

A couple months of tweaking prompts with Claude and I finally figured out one link building task that Claude can do better than me: compiling large lists of relevant domains.

Claude is not good yet with anything app-specific for link building from my experience and even worse if you use it for things like LinkedIn, you can probably get your account banned.

Below is an example of a Google sheet done 100% by Claude. Here's the basic process:

1. Have Ahrefs extension installed in Chrome 
2. Give it a list of long-tail keywords (primary keywords all bring up same high DR domains for results
3. Make one Google Sheet and give Claude guidelines to follow (specific DR, traffic, other requirements)
4. Prompt it to avoid duplicates

Drawbacks I see so far:
- Time: it took about 45 minutes to compile 60 domains. Not feasible during work hours but can be something you do when you take breaks etc.
- Quality: almost any output generated in first 1-2 hours of prompting won't be good. It'll just compile big domains like HubSpot, Wikipedia, etc.
- Limits: I'm on the basic $20/month subscription, ran out of tokens a few times which can be frustrating if you've spent hours that day prompting

Even with those drawbacks, I think it's still promising because this is a low hanging fruit task that I spend hours doing each week and it definitely can be automated. It just takes longer than you'd imagine (around a week or so to copy your full process and do it).

An easy way to A/B test your on-page SEO is to compare your content's performance with similar content posted on other domains.

Simple way to do this is to log any guest posts you write for other domains and look at their performance over a few months.

You can never know for sure what works across the board if you're only publishing on one domain, but over time you can refine your process and keep testing one change at a time.

I just keep a Google Sheet with any I've written and I check occasionally to see which ones get traffic/not. Try with your published blogs and see which of them performed well and why.
