The greatest gift you can give to your kid is a few weeks without technology, in the woods, surrounded by their peers and for 3 months of the year I get to make that happen for hundreds of kids. Making their own choices, defining their day and experiencing the world in nature and in community. The best part of that work is taking kids on multi day trips into the mountains, because learning how awesome you are and that you can do hard things is an incredible gift, and the earlier you learn it, the better off you'll be. 

4) I spent 2 years living on a sailboat with my family in the Caribbean. The Turas Project is where I talk about the journey I've been on and how to make the next big step that will make your crazy dream come true. I've been lucky enough to live a life of multitudes, and I'd love to talk to you about yours.

Me!! when I'm on my way to spend 3 days with Laura Brunton and some incredible women to talk/plan/reimagine  life and business. 

First time I've ever been so excited for a trip with my laptop and notebook.

I learnt so much from you all. How differently and magnificently you navigate the world and your work. We are so limited by imagining other people's success, without taking time to see the messy, imperfect, heart filling & wrenching, bloody hard work it is. It was inspiring to witness what you have all achieved AND how. And so incredible to hear you articulate your ambition.

I’ve been around the TEDx block a few times. 


That’s me on the left, jumping for joy as I promoted my first ever event. And that sweet elasticated waistband?  It's holding in child #2. Child #2 who turns 12 next month!


Since then,
- I've been the license holder and organizer of 5 sold out TEDx events
- I've coached over 100 speakers to be ready for the TEDx stage
- Videos of their talks have been seen over 2.5 million times on YouTube and TED.com
- 4 of my clients have either spoken on the TEDx stage or been accepted to a TEDx event in the last 3 months

Reason 712 to be grateful/ happy/ relieved I work for myself-

I don't have to ask permission to take time off to deal with... life.


- Tuesday: kid #1 needs to be picked up from school because some other douchebag kids deodorant gassed the bus, and the bus driver refused to move. (understandably)

- Wednesday: dog gets a UTI and has to go to the vet (symptoms available on request) 

- Friday: Kid #1 (that one again) - has massive eye infection and has to visit various doctors around Scotland to tell us that antibiotics will probably do the trick. 



Also extremely grateful for very understanding, flexible clients who I have cancelled on this week. Sometimes twice. ❤️

I once recieved a TEDx application that was a 7 page script and full slide deck. 

I read the first paragraph- a charming story about overcoming  somethingorother. 

I have no idea what the talk was actually about, I never got there. I had 157 other applications to read. 

It may have been Brene Brown. 

We’ll never know. (alas, doubtful)


Most people never apply to do a #TEDx because they think their talk needs to be fully written. It doesn’t. 

What organizers are looking for is a fully formed, clearly, concisely articulated IDEA.  They want to know what you want to say and if/ where you will fit into their event. 

And they want to find that out as soon as possible. 


Every event has a slightly different application process but in general, this is what you need to apply:

- Your idea in a nutshell (if you can't say it in a sentence, you don't know what it is yet)
- A brief outline of your angle, why it matters and the takeaway/ call to action. 
- Why your idea is different
- Why it's relevant now and to this audience (personalize for location & theme)
- Why you are the right person to give this talk

Most will also ask for a 1-3 minute video introducing yourself and your idea -  filmed on your phone or webcam is fine. 


The main problem with planning and writing your talk in advance of getting on the stage, is that it can take months or even years between applying and speaking. Your perspective will change, your stories will evolve and each event may have a different theme that you can't possibly prepare for.

The most valuable thing you can have is a rock solid idea and an anchor application that your eventual talk will grow out of, no matter where you end up on the stage.

Luckily the teen patient is just thrilled to get out of school early. 

Gutted I didn't bring my book. Or laptop. or a snack.

Think of a moment in your life


It doesn’t have to be a big one. 

A decision you made. A conversation you had. A view you can't forget. A hello or a goodbye. A moment - of deep calm, of terror or euphoria, of love or pride or relief.

Explore that moment. 

How did you feel?  Who was there?  What were the decisions you made that led up to that point? What happened as a result? Why do you still remember it now?



I have never experienced your life. I can never walk in your shoes nor can you walk in mine. 

But when you talk about a moment and share the feelings and decisions around it, I can see you and recognize myself. 


Your life story is not what resonates with people, it's how you reacted or felt in any given moment that is what allows people to connect.

And that is the heart of how to share your story. 

When I hear people say things like "I don’t know how to tell my story", or "I don’t have anything worth sharing". It’s because you are trying to turn a lifetime of moments into a meaningful summary. Don’t.

It’s impossible to distill your life down to a 10 minute talk, or even an hour long key note. It’s hard even in a book. 


So look for moments. Moments that have mattered, and share those. 

Never underestimate the value of telling the stories of your life. For yourself, but also for others who might hear something, and through it, see a path forward that they never thought possible.

Talking passionately isn't enough.

What Amber said to Bethany in PE and how Mrs M reacted (unnecessarily).
This meme that I can’t show you but will try to explain badly, but in great detail.

These are people I love deeply.

I care about their joy. 

And I really try to listen. 

But it's HARD when frankly, you just don't care. My brain naturally wants to fill dead air time with practical thoughts- what will I cook for dinner? Did I actually wash those rugby socks or just think I did?

And so I drift off to the dulcet sounds of their sweet voices. 


Because talking with passion isn't enough.

No matter how enthusiastic you are, your audience will never care as deeply about your idea as you do. 

So- how do you keep them listening?

A speaker needs to make the listener FEEL something.

You need to make them care about the outcome, the impact, YOU. 

You also have to make it relevant to THEM.

Your new hydro-compressing-oil-supressing-carbon-fantasmo might be the greatest thing since sliced bread. But frankly Kyle, I don’t give a monkeys unless: 
- it saves me time and/ or money
- it’s more fun than the Fourth Wing 
- makes me laugh like a drain, or 
- makes me feel like we're changing the world. (note: not you- us- I want to feel like I’m on this journey too, and that I desperately want you to succeed).

If you make the audience feel like this matters to them, and that they care about the outcome - then they'll not just listen the whole way through, but go home thinking about what you said.

Most audiences have great instincts about a talk.


They know what’s working and what’s not.
They know what they think about your stories, slides, structure.
They feel… something… at the end.

They just aren’t comfortable sharing those feelings with you!


That’s why it’s so hard to get good feedback when you practice. 

People genuinely want to be supportive, and if they do have some critical feedback they don’t want you to feel bad or they don’t trust their judgement. And most often, they just don’t have the words to articulate their impressions in a way that would be meaningful and constructive. 


So, to get really helpful feedback you need to ask specific questions.

What was my main idea?
Were there enough examples to make everything clear?
How did you feel at the end?
Did I repeat myself ever?
Was that joke actually funny, or were you just being kind?
Were my slides helpful or distracting?
Did I have any annoying habits like swaying or cracking my knuckles?
