Most companies still treat a design system as a visual asset.

In reality, it behaves more like infrastructure.

When a design system is used by a company, it can help reduce costs for all the products the company already has. Also, using a design system can reduce the costs of making new products by different teams in the company.

Here’s where the real financial return shows up:

1. Reduction of duplicated efforts across teams.

When multiple teams are rebuilding and recreating similar elements, there are three new associated costs for each team: a new design, a new coded version, and the need for each team to perform QA. With the implementation of a design token system, this cycle is not necessary.

2. Component scalability across product portfolios.

When a company builds a system to support a group of products, they make more money by creating one design and using it many times for all the products in the group. This is why companies have been able to reduce the time it takes to get products to market by 20-40% without adding more staff.

3. Patterns decrease cognitive load and time spent deciding.

Once an organization sets up design patterns to support their onboarding, dashboards, permission systems, navigational structures, and error state designs, teams won't have to argue about the most important design principles. 

4. The cost of change decreases dramatically.

I can’t remember the last time I used an app that didn’t ask me to share, rate, or “engage.”

We’ve quietly shifted from designing for people to designing for distribution.
The algorithm rewards speed, volume, stickiness.

But something gets lost along the way.

Ever wondered why Warren Buffett’s net worth ($93B) is 𝟓𝟎 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬 more than Charlie Munger’s?
 
They started out similarly. But 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐞 made all the difference.
 
Buffett went all-in on Berkshire Hathaway early (gaining control in 1965), kept an extremely large stake, and spent decades growing Berkshire. Berkshire benefitted from the tremendous leverage that insurance float provided.
 
Munger, by contrast, had a much smaller stake in Berkshire. He also preferred to invest outside of Berkshire, through real estate and various ventures.
 
Both men were brilliant. Both made big wins. But Buffett’s concentrated bet led to far greater accumulation of wealth.

We rank poorly for our long working hours.
 
That was startling to me.
On paper, we seem to be winning with high incomes.

In real life?
Many people are exhausted.
Working 10 hours a day, so they can live 4.

Money is useful.
But we don’t get back time.
 
This is why I’ve never seen investing as just a “get rich” game.
 
To me, it’s an attempt to rebalance our lives.
 
To slowly reduce dependence on hours worked.
 
To buy back small pockets of time first — then bigger ones.
 
Not to stop working tomorrow.
 
But to make sure work doesn’t consume every tomorrow.

It’s my favourite season of the year.
Prediction season.
 
Banks have begun rolling out their 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐜𝐤 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔.
 
I always chuckle when I read these headlines.
We all know the future is inherently unknowable.
For some reason, banks feel an irresistible urge to show they can stare deeply into a crystal ball.
 
What I don’t see, though, are many end-year reviews asking:
“So… how did last year’s predictions do?”
 
That document would likely not make great marketing material.
 
One forecast I came across really took the cake 😄
Not only was it predicting markets 𝟏𝟐 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐭…
It also had a view on 𝟐𝟎𝟒𝟎.
Fourteen years into the future!
Why??

Warren Buffett once put it perfectly:
“Forecasts may tell you a great deal about the forecaster; they tell you nothing about the future.”
