Hiring for SEO Lead!

Imagine you're a new Head of SEO. $180K budget approved. Leadership expects pipeline impact in 60 days. What’s your first move to generate pipeline from Google + AI search?

If I were you, the first thing I’d do is make a list of money/revenue-generating keywords. These are the exact (BOFU) terms your highest-LTV, lowest-churn customers search. 

- Ask sales and CS: which customers have the highest ACV and stick around longest?
- Then validate with data: pull closed-won deals from the last 12-18 months.

These segments might be defined by industry (SEO agencies), use case (multi-channel outreach for sales teams), or team size (remote startups under 50 people).

Once you know your best-fit customers, map out every BOFU keyword they'd search for when they're ready to evaluate or buy: 

- Best X (best CRM for small teams)
- Alternatives (HubSpot alternatives Reddit)
- X vs Y (Asana vs Monday comparison)
- Reviews (Pipedrive review)
- Jobs-to-be-done (how to track sales without Salesforce)

Then, do 2 things: 

🔥 Own every inch of Google for these terms.
🔥Write prompts based on these keywords, find out sources AI cites for these prompts and create content for every source.

Luckily, most of these sources overlap as AI pulls extensively from content that ranks on Google: Reddit threads, blogs, third-party listicles, YouTube content, Wikipedia page. 

So every piece of content you create for Google is simultaneously building your AI search presence. One strategy, two channels. 

And when you go deep enough on 15-20 keywords, something bigger happens: every high-intent buyer researching that problem keeps running into your brand. 

On Google, in the AI answer, on Reddit, on G2. In no time, you become the category leader they already trust and eventually, buy from. 

That trust from high-intent buyers turns into demos. Demos turn into pipeline and you stand proudly in your next performance review.

AI SEO Marketing Playbook

Somewhere right now a buyer is asking ChatGPT about your brand. If you want AI to answer in your favor, do this:

First of all, understand exactly how AI perceives your brand. 

LLMs have a mental model of your company. A living, breathing knowledge graph built from whatever the open web has said about you — good, bad, outdated, incomplete.

All that information comes from places like:

- Reddit threads
- SEO blog posts
- G2 reviews
- YouTube breakdowns
- Third-party comparisons

If complaints, poor positioning, or negative discussions appear often enough, they start to define the narrative. 

So start by auditing what's out there. Map every negative signal attached to your brand. If there's a Reddit thread complaining about a missing integration, ask your different members of your team to jump in that thread, address it honestly, share what's been built since, and shift the narrative.

While you’re at it, look at the positive signals and reinforce them. Create new sources of truth that LLMs can pull from. 

In short, ask yourself: where can I create content that LLMs will actually cite?

🔥Maybe you beef up your integrations page so AI stops saying you don't have them.
🔥Create BOFU content that clearly explains every feature.
🔥Engage in the Reddit threads where your brand is being misrepresented and correct the narrative directly.
🔥Respond to every G2 review with context that reframes the conversation.

Every source you create is a new input into the knowledge graph AI builds about you. Control what buyers see about you in AI answers.

I’ve reviewed 1,067 job applications in the last 2 years. Not once did I check the candidate’s CV. I think they’re one of the most outdated parts of the hiring process.

So we've removed it from our application process completely. 

When evaluating an application, all I care about is the effort someone puts into it.

- Did they actually think through their answers?
- Did they record a Loom specifically for us or reuse a generic one?
- Did they share real examples of their work?
- Did they explain how they approached a problem?

Another thing that might surprise you but big logos on a CV is a red flag for me. 

I know I’ll probably get pushback for saying this. But large companies often create very structured, comfortable environments. You follow SOPs. You stay within a defined scope. You rarely have to figure things out from scratch.

When you’re working in a small, scrappy team, most of that structure doesn’t exist. You’re figuring things out as you go.

So when I review an application, I’m looking for signs of that mindset:

Do they take ownership?
Do they care about the craft?
Are they willing to learn fast?

We've been telling our B2B SaaS clients to get on Reddit for months now.

Posts with external links from new or low-karma accounts get auto-removed. But comments? They fly under the radar. And the best part - Reddit threads rank on Google, and LLMs actually pull from them when forming answers.

So your comment in a thread about "best email marketing tools" doesn't just help the person asking. It shows up in Google. It gets picked up by ChatGPT. It compounds.

But you can't just show up day one and start dropping your product name everywhere because Reddit will just shadowban you before you know it. 

There's a warm-up period
There's a way to structure your comments so they don't get nuked
There are specific post types that are worth your time

A client came to us after churning through multiple SEO agencies in 3 years. In Q4 2024, we grew their traffic by 48% and ranked them on page 1 for multiple core commercial keywords.

But their site was a mess when we started:

❌ 3000+ blog posts
❌ Massive content cannibalization
❌ Thin, outdated content ranking for nothing
❌ No proper SEO strategy in place

They’d almost given up on SEO but took a last bet on @Scalerrs. Here’s what we did to make SEO their biggest inbound channel: 

1/ Quick wins

→ We mapped all 3000+ pages
→ Identified cannibalization issues
→ Consolidated or removed underperforming content

This alone yielded a 40% traffic increase before we published anything new.

2/ We refreshed their BOFU pages 

→They had pages targeting high-intent keyword 
→ But the content was outdated and structured poorly.
→ We rewrote and optimized these pages. 

Within weeks, they were ranking on page 1 for their core terms.

3/ We built a BOFU content strategy 

→ We mapped every commercial keyword directly tied to revenue
→ Went after “X vs Y,” “best X software,” and alternatives searches
→ Built clear, opinionated pages that helped buyers make a call

In Q4, the results shocked them to the core:

🔥 Overall increase in traffic: +48%
🔥 Increase in blog traffic: +59%
🔥 New content performance: +317% vs their old content
🔥 Refreshed content performance: +48%

Hey Peter, I see you’re making (SEO/AEO) a top priority in 2026 at Databox. And you’re right, the new world of search engine is insanely different. Nobody has figured this sh*t out completely.

We’ve legit pivoted our AEO strategy 3x in 2025. Until we hit a spot that kinda worked for our B2B SaaS clients.

Which is, reversing-tracing what AI cites, which is mostly Reddit threads, YouTube, Wikipeda, 3rd party listicles, etc and creating content for those channels.

If I had to go in-depth and built an AEO strategy for Databox, this is what I’d do:

1/ Identify high-LTV, low-churn customer segments

I’d pull my sales data and make a list of 3-4 customer segments which drive the most revenue and stick around longest. 

For Databox, SEO agencies are a strong candidate it seems. They do heavy reporting and are actively searching for tools like Databox. That's the segment I'd build one part of the strategy around.

2/ Map high-intent keywords and build out prompts

Once I have my segments, I'd go into Ahrefs and map out every high-intent BOFU keyword they search for. Even though buyers type in prompts, every prompt is anchored to a core keyword. This is why it’s important to make a list of keywords first. Then, build out prompt variations stemming from the keyword. 

I’d use a tool like Profound or Promptwatch to create this. Some prompt variations I’d target for Databox: 

- "What's the best SEO reporting software for agencies managing multiple clients?"
- "I’m looking for SEO reporting software with custom data visualization”

4/ Go multi-channel — Reddit, YouTube, Blog

Most GEO advice says AI has replaced Google, so stop creating traditional content. That assumption misses how people actually search.

Real search behaviour looks something like this: someone asks ChatGPT, finds a few options, then goes to Google to validate. They click a Reddit thread. They watch a YouTube video. They skim a comparison page. 

Clicks are fewer but they're very high intent, and if you’re able to capture that, you win the SEO game. 

More importantly, those exact sources—Reddit, YouTube, listicles—are what AI pulls from when it decides who to recommend. 

So by showing up there, you're winning on Google AND fueling AI search at the same time.

I wouldn’t call AI search a black box anymore. After working with 45+ SaaS companies, I’ve noticed clear patterns in how ChatGPT and Perplexity decide what to cite. Here’s what I’m seeing behind the scenes:

When you enter a prompt, the model analyzes the intent behind it. Intent usually falls into two buckets: 

- Informational
- Commercial

If the intent of your prompt is informational, AI looks for sources that explain a concept clearly. If the intent is commercial, it’ll look for comparisons and consensus. 

Let’s take the example of a commercial intent. 

When a buyer asks something like, “What’s the best email marketing tool for e-commerce?”, the model cannot rely on a single article or opinion to form an answer.

Instead, it looks for multiple independent sources that arrive at similar conclusions. To build that consensus, AI combines two types of information: 

- Its internal training data
- Live web results from sources it already trusts.

AI also leans heavily on entity information to see if a company exists as a well-defined entity across multiple trusted environments.

That is why you should build your presence across platforms like Wikipedia, G2, Reddit, YouTube, and established third-party listicles. 

If 6 out of 10 sources mention "Mailchimp" as a top email marketing tool for e-commerce, that's a strong signal. 

Finally, AI compresses all of this information—training data, live web results, entity data, consensus signals—and synthesizes it into a single response. 

AI search isn’t a black box. As long as you identify sources AI trusts and build your presence on those channels, you’ve nothing to worry!

The traditional B2B buyer journey is dead. AI just compressed 6 weeks of research into a single prompt. Here’s what’s changed and how to adapt:

Earlier, discovery started with search engines. Buyers typed keywords, opened multiple tabs, and jumped between blogs, review sites, G2/Capterra, listicles. They'd collect opinions, compare features, read case studies,

Over weeks, they'd stitch these to form a shortlist of 3–5 vendors. Then they'd start the actual evaluation process: demos, trials, pricing conversations.

But today, AI search has collapsed that entire process.

Now buyers ask one question to ChatGPT or Perplexity: "What's the best CRM for a 15-person sales team with HubSpot integrations?"

And they get a detailed summary with comparisons, key features, pros and cons.

They also ask follow-up questions.

– “Which one is best for mid-market SaaS?”
 – “Which integrates best with HubSpot workflows?”
 – “What are the downsides of X?”
 – “Compare A vs B in more detail.”

Instead of opening 15 tabs, they create a shortlist based on what AI recommends. 

After that, they validate the list on Google. 

They search those specific company names (which is why branded keyword searches are actually increasing). They check Reddit threads, YouTube reviews, blogs, looking specifically for those shortlisted vendors.

That means, if your brand doesn't appear in AI answers, you're not making the initial shortlist. And if you're not on that shortlist, you're fighting an uphill battle even if someone discovers you later.

This is why you need a GEO strategy. It ensures you're present in the new buyer journey, where AI forms the shortlist before sales ever gets involved.

Searched your brand on ChatGPT lately? And felt like you’re being portrayed a little… negatively? Where is AI even picking that up from? Here’s where: 

You see LLMs build a narrative around your brand based on 2 things: 

1/ Consensus: 

First, LLMs look for patterns across sources.

In simple terms: Which brands keep showing up when people discuss this category?

If your brand keeps appearing across places like Reddit, YouTube, review sites, blogs, forums, and documentation pages, AI thinks your brand belongs in the conversation.

The more places your brand shows up, the stronger the signal becomes. A simple numbers game.

But that’s only half the story.

2/ Context:

But mentions alone aren’t enough. LLMs also analyze the sentiment and framing around those mentions.

In other words: Under what light is this brand being discussed?

For example, if multiple threads say:

- “Their support takes forever to respond.”
- “Customer success is slow.”

AI will synthesize that pattern and say your support team is slow. 

This is why managing reputation in AI search is a different ballgame. You need to make sure the broader internet (Reddit threads, YouTube videos, 3rd Party Listicles, etc) talks about your brand:

- In enough places
- In the right context

Nobody actually knows what BRAND is. They'll say "awareness" or "positioning." But strip it all back and brand is just one thing: what people associate with your name when you're not in the room.

1. What people see in your marketing/the value they get
2. What people experience when use your product
3. What people say about you when they talk to others

Of all the levers you can pull to reinforce all three, content marketing (YouTube, blogs, etc) is the most powerful. And nobody has used it better than Ahrefs.

Search almost any SEO related question and you will find an Ahrefs guide ranking on Google. Or, go to YouTube and you will likely see a tutorial. It’s no joke they’ve put out 356 videos. 

That’s why for most marketers like us, Ahrefs is not just an SEO tool. It is one of the companies that taught SEO in the first place.

So when someone (in this case, 660k YouTube subscribers + insane Google traffic) eventually evaluates SEO tools, the brand that already taught them how SEO works is naturally the one they trust the most. 

This is why content marketing through SEO and YouTube is such a powerful brand-building engine. And you’ve made the perfect use of it, Tim Soulo!
