Hiring Sr. Reddit Specialist 

Last week, I spoke to 11 CMOs, and almost all of them pointed to the same problem: “We rank well on Google, but AI doesn't cite us.”

So I asked a few follow-up questions and realized the core issue: They were just assuming SEO and GEO were the same strategy.

They’re not. Here’s how GEO actually differs from SEO in practice: 

1/ What pages actually matter

⚡ In SEO, most effort went into blogs and landing pages because those were the pages meant to rank. 

💥 In GEO, AI frequently pulls from places SEOs historically ignored, such as documentation folders, integration pages, help centers, and product FAQs. These pages were never built for traffic, but they explain how a product actually works, which is exactly what AI needs when answering real user questions.

2/ Where authority really comes from

⚡ SEO teams focused heavily on backlinks, but they rarely cared about where else the brand appeared as long as rankings improved. 

💥 GEO forces you to care deeply about bigger initiatives like Reddit, Wikipedia, G2, Capterra, YouTube, and third-party listicles, because these are the sources AI cites. 

3/ How you measure success

⚡SEO success was measured through clicks, impressions, and traffic growth. 

💥 GEO success is measured through mentions, accuracy, and sentiment. 

This is why treating GEO as “SEO with a new label” quietly fails.

Semrush analyzed 248,000 Reddit posts cited in LLMs to find out what’s ranking, and the results are pretty eye-opening. 

Here's everything you need to know:

1/ Reddit is a leading source for AI tools:

I’ve been saying this for a while, and well, now, you have data to prove it. 

Reddit is the No. 1 cited domain on Perplexity, No. 2 on SearchGPT, and No. 3 on Google AI Mode. 

2/ AI doesn't use Reddit content word-for-word

LLMs paraphrase rather than quote. So don't worry about the 1 negative Reddit thread talking about you. 

AI synthesizes multiple comments. That means if you seed comments from different angles and build an overall positive consensus, AI will work in your favor.

3/ Reddit posts don't need extremely high engagement to be cited

Viral threads aren't the goal. 80% of cited posts have fewer than 20 upvotes, and 70% have under 20 comments. In fact, most cited posts are older (~900 days) and brief (~80 words), proving that topical relevance beats popularity.

So don't obsess over karma. Create helpful, focused responses that directly address common questions (long-tail keywords) inside threads relevant to the problem you solve.

4/ Discussion and Q&A posts > Any other post format

Q&A threads account for over half of all Reddit citations, followed by comparison and discussion posts. Together, these three formats make up nearly 75% of cited content. 

Show up where people ask for help, and seriously, skip the sales pitch. You might get banned before AI even notices your comment.

AI Search

For AEO, everyone I know is doubling down on:

- SEO
- Owned blogs
- Third party mentions

It’s great, but not gonna be enough for 2026.

We all know by now that LLMs lean heavily on a cluster of external sites:

- Reddit (ChatGPT & Perplexity heavily)
- Wikipedia (Used as entity graph)
- YouTube (AI Overviews & AI Mode heavily)
- Medium
- LinkedIn 
- G2/Capterra 

And while owned content absolutely matters, as it's part of the scraped content on search engines.

Showing up on these other platforms gives you an extra edge, as with LLMs you're ultimately playing a "consensus" & "context" game.

In short, who can be mentioned in as many places as possible, all while supporting the best narrative about your brand. Which can be positive or negative.

And at Scalerrs, we're seeing this more and more where brands with little budget are struggling to cover ground. 

Which is absolutely needed for LLMs, due to the nature of how they work and the size of information they pull from.

And it's only going to get increasingly important, where LLMs will aim to be as factual as possible, which means they'll pull from even more sources.
