Because this is precisely such a blunder.

Not just the act itself, but the perception architecture around it — one that signals a regime unable to read the room, unable to adjust, unable even to project the appearance of reflection. (And in politics, appearance is everything.)

With this many bullets in its own leg, critics don’t need to attack. They only need to standby and watch the regime limp toward its own undoing.

African nations have one important job: to minimize the physical and perceived barriers of doing business in the continent. Not compounding them.

When a country's elections start resembling preparations for an alien invasion, it filters the kind of investors you attract. When your politics look militarised, the world concludes your institutions aren’t stable — and capital hates instability.

When you rule through panic, overreaction, and brute force, serious investors avoid you like a plague.

They see erratic policy signals, unpredictable governance, and a political class that can’t separate national interest from regime survival.

What you end up with is looters. Short-term extractors.

People who only need one or two gatekeepers in the system to open the taps and harvest what’s in the ground.

These actors don’t care about political risk because they’re not building anything. They’re stripping value.

Meanwhile, the investors who matter look elsewhere — the ones building data centers, manufacturing hubs, cloud services, logistics networks, financial rails.

Not because they don’t like you, but because you’ve shown them your institutions can’t hold a promise for five years.

Institutional immaturity traps a country in a narrow economic destiny:

no diversification,
no knowledge economy,
no high-trust sectors,

just digging things out of the ground and hoping the price stays high.

All because your governance style broadcasts one message to the world: "Our policies are unstable, and our institutions are unreliable."

And markets react to signals — not speeches.

The regime loves telling ordinary Tanzanians to “know your place.” But the moment someone higher up the global food chain says it back to them, they suddenly transform into anti-imperialist freedom fighters.

Authoritarian pride is loud at home. And painfully thin abroad.

China refuses to call itself a developed country, even after reaching upper-middle income status, as the World Bank classifies it.

Partly propaganda, yes. But mostly philosophy. China is an engineering state and what do engineers do? They build.

So it makes sense to keep a “not there yet” mindset.

Then there’s my country, Tanzania — and much of Africa — where we build one hospital and interrupt broadcasts to celebrate. Banners everywhere, “Tunaupiga Mwingi!” And vilifying citizens who demand more.

The G20 is talking about “debt relief” again. But this time, relief from who exactly?

Look at the chart by the Economist. The story isn’t external anymore. African debt has quietly come home.

A growing share of what governments owe is to their own banks, pension funds, and investors. In several countries, domestic lenders now hold more than half of all government debt.

Mr Ramaphosa is right to warn that Africa risks defaulting on development. But who exactly is supposed to forgive the debt when so much of it sits on the books of domestic banks and pension funds? Any haircut there weakens the very institutions that keep credit flowing, and the shock would move quickly through the real economy.

The aid cuts, the US boycott of the summit, all send one message: the West is not in a forgiving mood as it used to in the 2000s. And you have China, who grants delays rather than permanent debt relief. 

Almost half of Africa’s external debt is now commercial paper—eurobonds held by private investors who negotiate with spreadsheets, not geopolitics.

So the question stands: when presidents call for debt relief, who are they expecting to absorb the loss?

The old architecture of forgiveness no longer exists. The new one is fragmented, market-driven, and far less sympathetic.

Until we acknowledge the composition of this debt—the rise of domestic borrowing, the dominance of commercial creditors, and the limits of bilateral goodwill—we’ll keep repeating the same plea without any of the tools that made the last wave of relief possible.

The Economist’s World Ahead 2026 isn’t exactly bullish on Africa.

ONE: It will be another disappointing year for Africa’s struggling democracy. They name Ethiopia’s election to be the “continent’s most farcical poll". 

TWO: The impact of aid cuts will bite harder in 2026. You’d hope this creates room for African governments to define their own development agenda. But the publication points out the uncomfortable truth: many of the same elites who talk sovereignty have overseen decades of economic underperformance. 

Real change may depend on a newer generation of leaders with a very different appetite for accountability and modernisation.

THREE: As the West turns inward, Africa leans further into China. The trade data already shows where the momentum is.

They also float the idea of a fast, messy, Trump-brokered deal in Somalia. The kind of peace that quiets headlines without fixing anything underneath.

Not the most inspiring outlook—but a useful mirror for where the continent stands, and where agency still lies.

Learned a new word today: Democide. The intentional killing of unarmed civilians by their own government.

It led me to a powerful paper, “Democide and Genocide as Rent-Seeking Activities” by economist Gerald W. Scully (Public Choice, 1997).

Economist Gerald Scully once argued that democide is not an accident—it’s rent-seeking by political elites. 

When institutions are weak and economies rely on resource rents, the state turns repressive because violence becomes a tool of economic preservation. 

His data showed that democidal states end up about 20% poorer, with weaker institutions and less diversification. In other words: a government that kills its civilians kills its future too.

For anyone studying authoritarianism, African politics, or institutional maturity, this paper is a must-read.

Samia Suluhu Hassan is no queen of hearts. She is a stark reminder - and warning - that authoritarian dictatorship is not just a "man's thing". 

The rise of whom many are now calling Idi Amin Mama reveals a chilling truth: narcissistic personality disorder expressed through brutality and tyranny is not exclusive to men. However, Suhulu does have the dubious honor of being the first female dictator in the modern sense of the word. She is also an unabashed practitioner of democide: the intentional (premeditated) killing of an unarmed or disarmed person by government agents acting under government policy (R.J. Rummel).

Contrary to stereotypes suggesting women leaders prioritize social issues, Suhulu, like her fellow male autocrats, engages in conflict and implements harsh policies to assert dominance. These actions serve to prove her capability in maintaining control. She depends on an authoritative style to demonstrate the masculine qualities that her male counterparts inherit from birth. Despite her apparent omnipotence, her behavior undoubtedly reflects how she grew up with internalised pressure to conform to the centuries-old male model of ideal power - authoritarian and aggressive - to be taken seriously as a leader. 

Suhulu obviously sees herself as a very "special" person deserving of admiration and, consequently, has difficulty empathizing with the feelings and needs of others: delusions of grandeur coupled with vindictive behavior lead to extreme potential for evil. Yet, she obviously also suffers from excessive anxiety – mostly regarding fears of citizen uprising and/or assassination. 

It's not a question of one freak individual and her psychology. It's something generic about authoritarian behavior that makes it deteriorate over time. Dictators, even those like Suhulu who came to power with the intention of helping the nation, frequently morph over time into tyrants. The series of decisions she has had to take over time concerning how much political intrigue and evil to indulge in in order to stay in power have converted her into a tyrant. As the cost of exit got higher, she had to indulge in even greater political intrigue, ruthlessness and evil to make sure she was not thrown out of office (based on Kaushik Basu, Oxford Open Economics, 2023). Now, having fraudulently won reelection amidst violent repression, and having no viable exit options, she has to be even more ruthless.

Suhulu will, eventually, come to regret this, if she isn't already regretting it. To survive, she will have to continue projecting fear and using terror as her all-purpose tool ... because she knows that once out of power, she will, in all likelihood, be punished by her own people or even killed by the generals.
