Funny how we only ever hear the first part of that^^ quote, often said with a derisive tone.

Nobody wants the "master of none" 😬

And yet... I proudly claim the moniker of "marketing generalist"!

My superpower is connecting the dots, working across multiple teams, and integrating across channels.

If you need someone who sits at the intersection, I gotchu.

And this is why I'm always slightly surprised but delighted when I'm recognized in a specific marketing discipline.

My current title is "Lifecycle Marketing", but I contributed enough PMM-related content to earn a spot on the 2025 Product Marketing Influencer list.

And Alt Marketing School offers courses across allllll the marketing disciplines, including trendier topics, like the creator economy.

Personally, I think we're in a generalists' economy right now.

With teams running lean, leaders looking to bring in more AI and automation, and the rise of the fractional or solopreneur, generalists are making a comeback!

I almost ended up naked onstage 😳

I was playing a bride, wearing this ridiculous '80s-style dress (pictured below), with a dropped waist, heavy beading, and a ridiculous train.

And on opening night, the zipper down the back of the dress started coming undone...

Inching.
Down.
My. 
Back.

And no one could help me 😬

I felt the sleeves start to slide towards the edge of my shoulders.

I felt an unpleasant breeze on my lower back.

And I realized that I'm just hoping I don't end up naked in front of the audience.

So... when I tell you that I've had things go wrong onstage, I'm not talking about a momentary hiccup with the slides or stuttering over a few words or going blank on my next sentence 😅

What this means for you, as a professional sharing your knowledge at a conference or Town Hall or QBR: it's gonna be ok.

YOU CAN DO IT!

At minimum, you won't end up naked onstage.
And the audience probably won't even notice a flub!

I get a lot of questions about how to overcome the fear, swallow the nerves, and feel confident stepping onstage.

One of my counterintuitive exercises is to catastrophize.

What's the WORST thing that could happen?

How would you react (and recover) if it happens?

Thinking through the worst-case scenario takes the surprise and sting out of it, because usually, it's not that bad.

And now you know how to react 😎

I said I ALMOST ended up naked onstage... handily, I've had a lot of practice reacting to things going wrong.

I straightened my posture to widen my shoulders, put my hands on my hips and across my chest to keep the dress from slipping off completely, and angled my back away from the audience to maintain a little dignity.

And then I asked the costumer to secure the zipper before the next performance, 'cuz we're not trying to have things go wrong twice 💃

(Full disclosure: I'm trying to streamline my inbox a bit, so my goal is to make this an easy place for folks to connect without a middleman 😀)

AI can be the epitome of a productivity mirage.

It FEELS productive to craft the perfect prompt, thinking of all the details that an LLM might need to tailor its response to your specific use case.

It FEELS like progress to refine and refine again and refine just once more for perfection.

It FEELS like insight to ask, "But what about _____?" over and over again.

And. Yet.

Blathering on with the chatbot is not, in fact, DOING anything.

Did you actually use all that research that it pumped out for you to take action?

Did you make the updates to the slide deck or blog post, based on the recommendations?

Did you go to the event and see for yourself whether your ICP actually attends?

I've been struggling with this mirage over the last few weeks 😳

In particular, I'm sparring with Claude to improve my talk track and slides, based on session scores and audience comments from my fall speaking engagements.

I feel like I've been so productive!
I spent so much time typing!
I considered so many angles!

My slide deck has not changed.
My speaker notes are not updated.

And as I go back through the chat history, I'm left feeling a bit overwhelmed, annoyed, and generally unmotivated to take the necessary action to ACTUALLY IMPROVE.

AI is only as good as the action it enables.

You can "doom scroll" and "water cooler chat" and "push pixels" around in an LLM just as easily as any other tool (maybe more so 😅).

Don't fall prey to the productivity mirage.

There are MANY smart marketers in the world.

They have great ideas, they've executed impactful programs, and they've written useful books.

The difference between what they share and what I share is literally THEM and ME.

It's not just about the idea.
It's about the person sharing the idea.

WHO says it is just as important as WHAT they say.

People trust people like themselves.
People resonate with different people.

So using your authentic voice, talking about your lived experience, and sharing your unique expertise is the reason someone trusts you, follows you, and listens to you.

"But what if they build a personal brand and then leave!?!"

🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

This is common pushback on not only allowing employees to share their insights, speak on podcasts, build a following on LinkedIn, etc., but encouraging and enabling them to do this.

The ironic part is that these statements are usually sitting alongside a mandate to "get the employees sharing company content on social media"!

Here's the thing: NOBODY wants the soulless company content 😬

Not the employee you're nagging to share it.
Not the viewer scrolling the feed.
And frankly, not even most of your users.

People want to hear from people, which means helping your employees share in their unique voice is a much better approach, all the way around.

And yes, some employees will attract recruiters and brand collabs and advisor offers, such that they might just decide to leave your company.

But the valley is small, and careers are long!

These former employees might become customers, partners, investors, or brand champions... there's so many ways to exchange value 🙌

And in the age of AI?
HUMANS are even MORE important!

Rant: Freakin' LinkedIn, you are BUGGY!! Pull yourself together!!

I've noticed that when I schedule posts, they often show up wonky.

It un-tags accounts that I at-mention.

It replaces images and videos with link previews.

The formatting in generally is just not what it looks like in the preview.

But apparently, now it's DOUBLE POSTING content?!?!

I schedule a post, went to "post now" and fixed the issues noted above, and then published... only to find that it apparently posted the same content, but with the mistakes, later in the day.

WHHHHYYYY!?!?

I didn't catch it in time to delete the rogue post, so I figured I'd ask if anyone else is seeing this janky behavior.

It's VERY frustrating.

I'm using native features and trying to follow whatever stupid rules the algorithm randomly enforces.

But good grief.

FIX THE BUGS.

My work has been featured in USA Today, CNBC, Forbes, AdWeek, VentureBeat, Entrepreneur, eMarketer, Business Insider, Media Post, and more. 

For two years, I produced and co-hosted an award-winning B2B marketing podcast for Salesforce. It won Best Podcast and Best Content Marketing Multi-Year Program from the Content Marketing Institute.

My team at Salesforce ran our YouTube channel (800k+ subscribers) and branded video content that grew our audience across channels, partnerships (like CNBC and Formula 1), and events (like Dreamforce).

I love B2B marketing — especially when it pushes the status quo and says something that makes the audience say, “I’ve never thought about it like that before.”

So, how'd I end up here? I started my career in book publishing as a development editor for the "For Dummies" series at Wiley. I managed every aspect of a book's creation: editing Tables of Contents, researching competing books, editing all chapters for overall theme and voice, managing art programs (including photo shoots and illustrations), and providing author guidance.

From there, I moved into social media and multimedia content creation in the agency world at BLASTmedia (now PANblast). This role allowed me to polish my content creation skills on a number of digital platforms, including video. I planned and created content for Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and beyond.

I then entered tech and joined ExactTarget's content marketing team as the first official content marketing hire. I subsequently joined Salesforce through ExactTarget's acquisition. I worked in ascending B2B content leadership roles at Salesforce for 11 years.

And then… a new adventure! I joined Microsoft in summer 2024 to lead content, social, and integrated marketing, managing our presence on the ground at global events like Cannes and pioneering an employee-generated (EGC) program.

In winter 2025, I struck out on a new adventure to be a content creator, consultant, and speaker full time.

I’ve been a hiring manager and panel interviewer for 8+ years. Some baller moves I’ve seen candidates do to stand out from other applicants:

- Made a portfolio webpage that had my name on it and talked to me specifically.

- Had 5+ people email me in the same week to give personal recommendations of the candidate.

- Referenced hot sauce multiple times in their application materials, after seeing I’m a hot sauce fiend on my socials.

- Made a short video (simple slides and voiceover) explaining why they were the right person for the role.

- Created graphics using the brand’s colors/font to show that they had a grasp of the brand’s look and feel, for a role that involved content creation.

- Talked about specific podcast episodes the brand had released, what they learned, and why that made them interested in the job.

- Spoke intelligently about something the CEO had recently tweeted (or do we say X’d now??) and offered their own take.

Not all of these people got the role… some didn’t. But their effort was memorable.

Just getting an application seen can be a feat these days. So I wanted to share in case these ideas help someone!

Can you scale this across 100 applications? Nope. 

But for the exact right role you’re uniquely qualified for and truly want, maybe it could be worth it to do something extra.

If you make a good impression on the hiring team but you don’t get the role, you can also ask for them for referrals to other jobs (which I’ve done for folks before and am always happy to do).

My ideal company rejected me after my job interview. Here’s how I turned the “no” into a job offer:

Not long after graduating college with an English lit degree, I applied and interviewed for the perfect entry-level role in my dream industry: an editorial assistant in book publishing.

I was crushed when I didn’t get the job.

I absolutely spent a few days feeling sorry for myself, and telling myself I’d never be good enough to work in publishing. Stewing in it, if you will.

After the initial disappointment wore off, I reached back out to the HR rep who had told me no, and said I’d love to be considered for future opportunities.

I gave her more examples of what I was qualified for and interested in, and expressed my belief that I would eventually be a part of the team.

I was a little bit delulu. But I’m grateful that she appreciated my persistence.

Weeks later, she offered me another interview opportunity for an open copy editor role, which was a step up from the editorial assistant role I initially interviewed for.

As part of that interview, I had to do a three-hour in-office editing test.

The test was supposed to assess my copy editing skills.

But… I couldn’t help myself from adding more robust, developmental edits to the doc.

“This should be the first header,” “Put this list in priority order,” “Find a stronger quote to support this point,” and so on.

No one asked me to provide those edits as part of the test. But I did it because I saw an opportunity to step up and make the piece better.

As a result, I ended up getting hired as a development editor instead of a copy editor, which was a goal I had thought would take me several more years to reach.

I’m sharing this story because I *still* believe in the powers of persistence, positivity, and going above and beyond on the job hunt.

Bloom where you’re planted — AND show up with more value than what was requested.

Even if you don’t have that fancy job title just yet or are a recent grad, you can still show up as a leader! 

Start acting like a leader, and the rest will follow. ✨ 

Hope this helps someone about to graduate college or looking for jobs.

This week, work is gonna get real. You might want a new job. But I want to deinfluence you from the idea of a “dream job.”

I had a dream job once… a job I’d wanted for years. And it, too, started to feel like a burden.

Sunday scaries. Friends with more exciting plans. 

“I have a headache.”

“I’m so tired this morning. I can’t plaster on a smile all day.”

“Maybe I can call in? How many days off do I have left?”

“Only one more hour, then I’ll be free!”

Yet before I had that job, this was also me:

“If I get to work in entertainment at Disney, I’ll be so happy.”

“I’ll never complain about my job, it’s my dream.”

“I’ll be jumping out of bed to make people smile and wear cool costumes.”

Yeah, uhhhh. The honeymoon lasted for all of a couple weeks. 😂 

My point being…

No job feels like a picnic every day.

If your job is helping you achieve your goals (like having financial stability, getting a certain job title, living where you want, having a flexible WFH lifestyle, or whatever matters to you)… you’re doing pretty well.

I don’t want anyone to be miserable in a job. So if that’s you, yes, please look for a new vocation. You’re in the right place. Welcome to LinkedIn. 😂 

But just a reminder that this week, when leaders are stressing about 2026 objectives and strategy decks are all due ASAP, pretty much all jobs are stressful.

You are normal. Next week will be better.

And if I may? One last reminder? 

The second full week of January is a REALLY good one to plan a vacation. 

Make a note for 2027. 👀

A few things that made it possible for me to create 100+ videos in 2025:

Batch-filming. Do your hair once. Film 3-4x. You’re welcome.

A video approach I like to call “drain it.” Film a lot of videos on one topic you know resonates. Drain that topic before moving to the next one.

Notion docs and templates. If you know, you know.

Film b-roll even when you think you don’t need it. Sunny day? Nice latte? Film b-roll when you’re out in the world! At the coffee shop, at the park, etc.

It means a lot to get this award for my TikToks because I only started taking TikTok seriously this past summer.

My #1 tip to make your content perform better in 2026 (and I know it might ruffle a few feathers):

Toss the brand guidelines out the window!

I know… you spent so long making them. They help the brand show up consistently. Before you had the guidelines, the brand was chaos.

I get it.

I’m not saying to throw away messaging and positioning. That stuff is critical.

I’m saying to stop making all content sound the same, in the name of the brand.

Check out this video for what I mean.

In B2B marketing, I’m seeing a major shift.

From a culture of content voice…

… to a culture of creators.

Your brand’s ideal creators can be inside your company (execs, SME, and other employees, amplified via EGC, or employee-generated content, programs).

But they can also be external. Like harnessing the voices of your customers, community, and industry experts.

I think this year is about finding the texture and uniqueness in each person’s voice that talks about your brand. 

Instead of reducing every voice to the sea of sameness.

Of course, I don’t actually believe you should have zero brand guidelines. 😭 

What I’m saying is that many brands focus more on a blah baseline than making content that stands out from all the slop.

Here are a few questions to ask to see if you should shorten and edit your brand guidelines for how content is changing.

📣 When talking about your brand, are customers reading from a script or speaking in their own words?

🖊️ Are your internal marketers always editing customer quotes to make them match your rules?

📆 Do your events have more internal than external speakers?

🔊 Does content follow a set formula every time?

💻 Are people barely editing what AI generates?

Yesterday, someone asked me what kind of content performs best on LinkedIn. I had a few ideas. But my final point was this:

Ultimately, people go on social media to be entertained.

Yes, even on a professional social network like LinkedIn! People still want to be entertained, not bored.

So here's my question.

What kind of content can you make that will be *fun for you to make* AND *fun for other people* to read/watch/otherwise consume?

That’s where I would spend the majority of your effort.

That is the most rewarding part of the Venn diagram.

Because the person having fun will not only create better content, but will also post more consistently on LinkedIn because it won’t feel like such a slog to them.

With that in mind… 

Here is something I had fun making this week. It’s my Weekend Update spoof for chronically-on-LinkedIn people, called Linky Update.

Loved speaking on a panel for Variety! A few things I did to prepare as a panelist:

(No, I don’t just show up and assume I’ll have brilliant insights worth everyone’s time)

First off, I never worry that I’ll sound “scripted” as a speaker. I’m much more concerned about delivering value to attendees than I am concerned somebody will think I prepped too much.

✍️ So the biggest thing I do when prepping for a panel is to create a rough sketch of my talking points, aligned to the session description.

I think some panelists skip this, but that is not how I personally deliver the most memorable, applause-worthy info.

So I always have some relevant talking points that I know I’ll hit.

Usually I prep these by aligning the session goals with with my recent LinkedIn posts, recent email newsletters I’ve sent, or slides I’ve made.

I put these thoughts in a Google Doc and read it in the days leading up to the panel and on the plane or Lyft ride heading to the event.

Sometimes, I’ll even record a voice note of myself reading those thoughts.

And then I listen to myself reading it all, like a podcast, so it sticks in my memory.

I don’t stick to it like some rigid, biblically accurate straitjacket. 

But I do want to have valuable points to hit, even as the conversation may veer a couple different directions.

📕 The next critical thing I do is some research on my fellow panelists.

You can use LinkedIn and any prep materials from the moderator.

Basically I’m looking for three things about the other panelists.

1) Common ground or areas where I know we will click. 

2) Possible “healthy conflicts” or areas where we may disagree. For example, a few months ago, I made a list of areas where my co-panelist and I would almost definitely disagree, since he came from a completely different stage of company.

3) Anything fun! Do we both have kids the same age, and can we joke about how we are both sleep-deprived?

🫂 The last thing I focus on is researching the audience. I really want to speak their language as much as possible, and give insights relevant to their daily lives without transmutation.

For this particular panel, the audience was entertainment marketing professionals.

I’m very passionate about the entertainment industry, but I have never worked full-time at a studio or streamer. So in the days leading up to the panel, I read a few industry blogs and kept pace with the biggest headlines. 

Referencing recent news is an instant way to get credibility with an audience and show that you are in touch with what they care about.

This particular pic/event was last year when I was in my previous role. I’m currently gearing up to present at more events in 2026!

“Marketers don’t need to worry that much about AEO. It’s all just SEO.” - Me a few months ago. But I was wrong.

For the last couple years, I definitely downplayed the impact of AI-driven search on websites and content.

I just didn’t think AI searches made up that many of the total searches online, and I thought marketers were overrotating toward AEO-first strategies.

Buuuut recently I’ve been doing more research on this topic, and it turns out marketers do need to prioritize AEO way more than I originally suspected.

So I read a lot of their resources and research on AEO, and I’m now firmly of the camp that search is VERY different than it was a few years ago.

Some of these might be controversial.

But this is my personal list of stuff that job seekers should stop wasting their time on in 2026:

Waiting for the interviewer to join the call if they’re more than 5 mins late (good indicator they won’t respect your time)

Wearing makeup or jewelry that won’t even show up on the Zoom (no need to do full glam; neat and recently showered is fine)

Writing long cover letters (short and punchy is what I always gravitated toward as a hiring manager myself)

Mass-applying to hundreds or thousands of roles (quality over quantity)

Only networking on LinkedIn, and never attending any IRL networking events

3 ways I'm maintaining a *sustainable* level of productivity this year:

I'm partnering with Notion, a product I've used for ages, to get the word out about all the ways Notion can help you meet your goals without being constantly stressed.

Because we are not carrying that overworked, brain-fried feeling with us into the new year!

I can honestly say the #1 way Notion improves my life is by keeping me organized as a creative person... without making me feel like all I do is project management.

For me personally, here's what that looks like (and yes, this picture is fully accurate, Notion = blue skies to me):

1) I use the amazing Notion Template database whenever I need a boost. Listen... there's no need to create yet another project tracker or strategy doc from scratch.

2) I chat with my Notion Agent to sort out ideas in my Notion workspace, and build docs and plans with me from there.

The Notion Agent has access to all my docs in Notion. I’ve recently used the Agent to:

💅 Search my meeting notes for action items, and format them into a new doc for a client.

📅 Go through my current deliverables checklist and tell me what I need to focus on that day.

⭐ Update multiple Notion pages with new data (like adding the new link for my newsletter to all my pages where I mention it).

3) This might seem counterintuitive, but I allow a lot of my ideas to be fully *unstructured.*

I have a catch-all Notion doc where I put random half-baked jokes, scripts, text posts, and other "what if????" ideas.

I don't try to organize everything in it because that would stress me out more. I allow myself some spaces where I can save ideas I don't want to forget. Where I can let them just breathe.
