I manage a team of Global Client Execs who sell software and services to pharmaceutical companies who run clinical trials. Medidata helps generate the evidence and insights to help pharmaceutical, biotech, medical device and diagnostics companies, and academic researchers accelerate value, minimize risk, and optimize outcomes.  My job is to remove obstacles for my sellers and help them to be successful any way possible.

I managed a large, diverse team of managers, sellers and technical experts who focused on building the Partner Ecosystem for AI Applications for IBM for North America.  I cover Resellers, Embedded Solution, Value Added Distributors, and Global System Integrators.  My team and I evangelized our channel to the sellers and clients alike to help retire quota, find new logos and drive revenue for IBM.  Our team and our Ecosystem contributed more than 50% of the overall revenue for North America.

I was the Client Executive responsible for the overall relationship with Ernst and Young for IBM representing Software, Hardware and Services.  This is a top account for IBM bringing in over $100 Million each year made complicated by EY being our client, partner and competitor.  My job was to build strategy with EY to accomplish their goals through IBM technology and services.  I managed a large team of 50+ Software, Hardware and Services leaders to ultimately drive business to EY as a customer and through EY as a partner.

I was responsible for building the Worldwide Channel for IBM's Counter Fraud. My job was to seek Business Partners with domain expertise to detect, analyze, investigate and fight fraud. I qualified, selected and ultimately sold through Software Resellers and Global System Integrators. I focused on Business Partners who have industry expertise in Banking, Insurance, Healthcare, Government, Telco and Retail. I evangelized these Business Partners within IBM and enable them to identify, influence and close sales opportunities. I helped partners to build their Global Strategies around fighting fraud with our products.

I managed the IBM relationships of several Business Partners in the East and helped them sell all IBM Software Brands.  It was my responsibility to evangelize them internally and remove any obstacles in their way.  I promoted their skills both internally and externally and ensured that they got as much face time and leads as possible.  The goal was to increase their Software Sales and ultimately increase their bottom line.

I built and managed the Co-Marketing program for 2009-2011 which was a marketing program investing in our partners to help them sell our software.  The program needed some restructuring and direction when I assumed the role. I ultimately built deep relationships with hundreds of partners across North America which drove leads and revenue for IBM by holding events and webinars for our software offerings.

Biggest branding mistake in corporate history.

Because there’s nothing soft about giving feedback that stings but still inspires.

Nothing soft about holding eye contact when a tough conversation could go sideways.
 
Nothing soft about walking into a room full of tension and leaving it full of trust.

Empathy. Communication. Self-awareness.
They’re not “nice-to-haves.”
They’re leadership heavyweights.

Technical skills might get you in the room.
Power skills keep you running it.

When a leader can’t read the room, can’t deliver a message that lands, can’t build trust when the pressure’s on, no spreadsheet, no title, no KPI can save them.

The pros play chess with emotion, not checkers with data.
They know when to stay quiet.
When to push.
When to show heart over hustle.

We’ve spent decades overvaluing what’s measurable and undervaluing what’s meaningful.

The future doesn’t belong to the smartest person in the room.
It belongs to the one who can make everyone else smarter.

So no, these aren’t soft skills.
They’re POWER SKILLS.

And they’re the real difference between managing tasks and leading humans.
Call them soft if you want.

Some neighborhoods have HOA meetings.
Mine has a 44-year tradition called The Tree Toasting, a progressive cocktail party where we wander from house to house like festive holiday nomads who know how to pace themselves-ish.

It is always the 2nd Saturday in December and we plan our outfits and our toasts.  

I’ve been organizing it for the last decade, and of course there’s a spreadsheet involved. Color-coded. Naturally.

Here’s what makes this tradition so special:
Years ago, everyone brought food to each house. Crock-Pots, cheese boards, mystery dips, you name it. But as the neighborhood evolved, so did the party. 

Now that one of my neighbors is an event planner, we’re rolling with signature cocktails, themes, and even an ice luge. The delivery has leveled up, but the heart of it hasn’t changed for a second.

We show up for each other.
We catch up on families, jobs, pets, and life.
We kick off the holiday season grateful for the people around us.
And every time I tell someone about this tradition, they say, “Man, I wish my neighborhood did that.”

Here’s the truth:
Your neighborhood can.
You don’t need perfection. You just need intention.
And this is exactly how building your career network works.
 
Community doesn’t magically appear. You build it.
One invite.
One conversation.
One brave reach-out at a time.

When you get intentional about the people you surround yourself with, everything gets better. You grow. You get curious. You feel supported. And opportunities have a way of finding you because people know you and genuinely want to see you win.

As I always say, there’s no such thing as job security. There is only career security, and you build that through the relationships you nurture.

But when I ask, “Who here has had a great leader who truly saw your potential?”
You can practically hear the fluorescent lights humming. A few hesitant hands.
Maybe.

And that right there is the gap.
That’s why I do the work I do.

People aren’t walking around overconfident — they’re walking around under-believed in. Not because they aren’t talented, but because no one ever told them they were.

Seeing potential is a leadership superpower.
It costs nothing, takes almost no time, and it changes lives.
 
It’s noticing the spark before they’re brave enough to call it a flame.

I talked about this with Keren Eldad PCC on her Coached podcast — because she’s one of those rare humans who actually sees you. Talking with her feels like someone handing you the mirror you didn’t realize you needed.

Let’s celebrate the extraordinary leaders who saw your potential. Tag them. Give them their flowers.
 
Let them know their belief mattered — because it did.

There are podcast invitations…
and then there’s getting the call to be on Keren Eldad's Coached podcast in Austin.

You pack a bag and move with purpose.

I flew home grateful, inspired, and reminded exactly why I love this work: when you get to watch a master operate at full power, you don’t just take notes… you level up.
