Why I don’t use time tracking to monitor my VA’s productivity

When I first noticed my VA’s productivity going down, my immediate reaction was:
 👉 “Let’s use a time tracker.”

Did it work?
 Nope.

Here’s why:
 Time tracking creates distrust.
It turns the relationship into “me vs. you.”
It’s like saying, “I don’t trust you, but I won’t tell you that — I’ll just monitor every second of your time.”

I tried it a couple of times. Both times, it didn’t make a difference.

And honestly, I knew why.
 I had smart, capable people.
 When their productivity didn’t improve, I didn’t want to fire them — because I knew they were good.
Something else was going on.

So instead, I did this 👇
 ✅ Started an open conversation
 ✅ Got honest about what I noticed
 ✅ Skipped the blame
 ✅ Reminded them that effort matters more than perfection
