Open Robotics

At Open Robotics, I was the "ROS Boss" of the Humble (LTS) release of ROS 2. This involved extensive collaboration with various stakeholders and the development of new infrastructure to streamline the release process.

To address a need in the testing process, I designed and implemented a Test Case Manager tool in Typescript. This tool automates the creation of test cases for different platform permutations and has been employed in several key releases, including ROS 2 Humble, ROS 2 Iron, and Gazebo Garden.

In addition to these responsibilities, I worked on various other projects that required a wide range of technical skills. These included debugging multithreaded executor issues, designing C++ client library features for Nvidia, contributing to NASA's VIPER mission, and integrating different UAV frameworks under a common API.

Robohub

As the Podcast Director at Robohub, I managed an international team and conducted over 100 interviews with key figures in the robotics field. The variety of our interviewees, from academics to industry leaders, allowed us to present a comprehensive view of the sector.

I led the team in expanding our podcast's monthly listenership from 2k to 120k and secured $20k in academic sponsorships. This growth and financial support helped to sustain our operations and extend our reach.

During my tenure, we produced and released 160 podcast episodes. This consistent output, combined with our increased listenership and financial support, illustrates my focus on steady growth and commitment to sharing knowledge in the robotics community.

Currently the technical lead for the U.S.-based robotics team in Intel's Open Source Technology Center (OSTC). As technical lead, I define the team's vision and transfer the vision into execution by formulating strategies, tactics, and action plans to drive results.

• Improved navigation architecture for ROS2, replacing the Nav1 architecture with a more flexible Task/Action-based architecture
• Introduced the use of ROS2 lifecycle nodes to Nav2, porting all nodes to enable a reliable navigation system bringup/shutdown, finding and fixing many issues with ROS2 in the process
• Developed Behavior Tree-based navigation to provide for flexibility and easy modification of robot behaviors. Split generic behavior Tree functionality into separate Github repository to benefit the ROS2 community
• Guided performance analysis of the Navigation2 software stack and optimization of key hotspots across the stack
• Currently implementing collaborative, multi-robot scenarios requiring host and network determinism

Senior Staff Software Architect, Open Source Robotics Software

Technical leader for an autonomous vehicle lab in Portland, Oregon, part of Intel’s Autonomous Driving Solutions Division (ASD) in the Internet of Things Group (IOTG). 

• Led the team to implement highway pilot functionality using Intel platforms on vehicles provided by a key OEM. Defined the team’s software process, specified the Highway Pilot requirements, designed the software architecture, led the implementation, and defined the testing process. 
• Led the design and implementation of a full simulation-based testing pipeline, including specification of testing scenarios, parameterization of tests, generation of voluminous testing output, and qualitative analysis of test results.
• Lead collaborative efforts with several groups at Intel and at other companies. These efforts help the Portland team to expand its influence and impact.

Senior Staff Software Architect and Technical Lead, Autonomous Vehicles

As a visual computing architect in Intel's Advanced Driving Technologies (ADT) group, I led the group’s computer vision strategy and technical direction. 

• Met with key automotive industry customers to understand their computer vision requirements and overall system architecture
• Developed a compelling proposal for a computer vision ASIC and acquired funding internally for the project, which was key to winning customers.
• Collaborated with Intel’s Computer Vision Group (CVG) on the definition of the ASIC for Advanced Driver Assistance/Autonomous Vehicles. 
• Received a Division Recognition Award for leading a cross-group team that successfully completed a customer’s “stress test” evaluation of Intel’s platform, giving Intel the front-runner position to win the Tier 1 company's business for future ADAS designs. 
• Co-developed ADT’s 2015 CES ADAS demo and presented the work at CES to automotive industry executives

Visual Computing Architect, Autonomous Vehicles

As a Senior Staff Software Architect and Applications Engineer in Intel’s Developer Relations Division, I worked with ISVs to help them to incorporate Perceptual Computing features into their applications. This included definition of requirements, analysis and optimization of their applications, development of software frameworks, and more.

• Initiated and guided the IPP Asynchronous (HPP) library, an acceleration library of video analysis building blocks implemented for both the CPU and the GPU. 
• Developed Pixelflow, a software framework  to enable an Augmented Reality pipeline on Intel GPUs, achieving a significant performance increase and power savings over a CPU-based pipeline.
• Analyzed and optimized the performance and power consumption of several Perceptual Computing marquee applications.
• Co-developed a touch responsiveness utility using novel video analysis algorithms to automatically detect the responsiveness of touch-based applications.
• Implemented the Webspeech API in Firefox, using the Intel PerC SDK.

Senior Staff Software Architect/Applications Engineer, Perceptual Computing

As a senior staff software architect for the Video Analytics Operation, I was responsible for the overall software vision and execution. I started from a basic concept and took a top-down approach to refine the ideas into a clear set of software interfaces, specifications, and implementation. I utilized the services of a local software development company to develop the ideas and guided them through multiple releases of the Video AnalyticsSDK. I then guided a team in Penang in the target business unit to gradually assume ownership of the software stack and tools. 

• Analyzed the video analytics domain and refined the ideas into a clear, coherent programming model designed to make it easy for customers to develop  algorithms

• Specified the Video Analytics API, a scalable, cross-platform interface for video analytics 
• Co-developed the coprocessor's instruction set and authored the Instruction Set Specification
• Defined the video analytics software roadmap, including detailed requirements for each release
• Use an iterative development methodology with regular, frequent releases (3-4 month cycles)
• Facilitated a smooth transition into the target business unit by ramping the software development team over multiple releases, training their developers, and integrating their software development practices
• Received a Division Recognition Award for an “innovative approach to developing a new silicon architecture and programming model.”

As the CTO for 3 Leaf, which later became Aeshen, I developed business opportunities, generated project ideas, wrote Statements of Work, specified project requirements, interceded on challenging technical issues, and contributed to resource planning efforts. I also authored technical content and designed and developed software in key areas of my expertise. For our primary customers, Intel and Microsoft, sample technology areas include Viiv, Intel Mobile SDK, EM64T, virtualization, multi-core, multi-threading, C# 3.0/Language Integrated Query (LINQ), and Microsoft Media Center.

He is expert in all phases of software development, ranging from requirements elicitation to the detailed performance monitoring and analysis. His designs are elegant and flexible and provide a stable and high integrity foundation for software development. 

• Expert technical communicator – Michael is an excellent communicator and routinely crafts top-notch specifications and technical content. He spent two years as the CTO of a small technology start-up that provided technical materials to customers like Intel and Microsoft, covering various technologies such as EM64T, virtualization, multi-threading programming, and C# 3.0 that the companies used to explain and teach their technologies online and at conferences.
