Last week, my wife and I spent 4 hours building what we call our "Family Firm" and setting our goals.

Here’s how it works:

𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟭: Pick your time horizon.

We chose 3 years, long enough to be ambitious. Short enough to feel real.

𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟮: Define your categories.

Career, Money, Lifestyle. Yours might be different, but the structure matters more than the labels at first.

𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟯: Set directions, not destinations.

"Live abroad for six months with the kids. Let them experience a new culture and language."

We decided on the country and did a quick lifestyle calculation. We set the compass: 5 minutes of work to get our direction aligned. 

𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟰: Choose one system.

Goals fail without habits to support them. Many frameworks exist, but I think James Clear's Atomic Habits is the best for us today.

𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟱: Schedule your next session.

Planning isn't a one-time event. It's a ritual. We discuss our goals monthly, quarterly, and yearly, both as individuals and as a family. We put these on our calendars to hold ourselves accountable.

We chose James Clear's Atomic Habits workbook and worked through it together, page by page and have everything in a shared notion page.

I studied behavior change for years. I also worked at a startup in this field. I talked with some of the brightest minds. My biggest take away focus on keeping things simple and accountable. Then, just get started.

I taught myself to code while working full-time, stocking shelves in a grocery store.

No bootcamp. No computer science degree. Just hacking video games in C tutorials at night and a lot of broken games..

The hardest part wasn't learning syntax. It was deciding what to learn next when nobody was guiding me.

That's exactly what my newsletter is about.

Over the past ten years, I've built data teams, taught at Bootcamps, and mentored engineers as they navigate the messy middle of their careers.

Off to Austin for Data Day Texas  can’t wait to catchup with so many folks across the data and AI space and understand all the directions the space is headed.

Also meeting Tyler Barstow IRL and Tony Blank from Trust & Will  for the first time - love remote fist work place but its nice to do a good old coffee in person.

I ran into Weimo Liu ,  who was three years ago at the a iceberg conference in NYC when PuppyGraph  was just starting out. I’m blown away by how humble he is and his willingness to always talk about deeply technical subjects .

My LinkedIn post impressions fell from 3,500 to 700 overnight. Some posts even went viral, hitting close to 100,000 recently.

Impressions tell you how many eyeballs scrolled past your post. They don't tell you if anyone cared. They don't tell you if someone saved it, shared it with a colleague, or thought about it.

I still get engagement. Comments from others facing similar issues in systems thinking, data engineering, or family and DMs that leads to real conversations. The stuff that actually matters when you're building relationships on this platform.

The only change was LinkedIn's choice to share my content with new people. And strangers weren't my goal anyway and really never have been.

The distinction that keeps me sane: there are metrics you control and metrics you don't.

You control whether you post consistently. You control whether you write things worth reading. You control whether you respond to comments and show up for your tribe.

You don't control the algorithm. You never did (ed - even when it was working in your favor, that was borrowed, not earned).

When a metric you don't control crashes, the move isn't to change everything. The move is to check the metrics you do control. If those are still solid, you're fine.

Stay focused on what you can actually influence. The rest is noise.

my team at Trust and Will and so many others. Honestly, it was one of the best conferences I’ve gone to yet again although having several days of delays in flights, I miss my home.

There’s a giant difference between systems and goals.

Goals without systems are just wishes.

I learned this while working for a behavior change startup, where behavior change was the product. People set ambitious goals, then wondered why nothing stuck.

The difference? Systems - small ones, tiny ones.

As a data leader, I see the same pattern. A dashboard that gets read but never acted on is just decoration. Numbers without action are meaningless.

Goals work the same way.

"Lose 20 pounds" is a goal. "Go to gym after kid drop off" is a system.

"Save more money" is a goal. "Auto-transfer $100 every paycheck" is a system.

Goals set direction. Systems create results.

2026 is my year of systems.

We inherit more than we realize from our families.

Not just traits like eye color or temperament.

I’m referring to financial habits. Automatic spending reactions. The stress (or avoidance) that emerges when the credit card statement arrives.

As a parent of four young children, I didn’t hire a money coach solely for budgeting advice.

I sought his help to break the cycle.

He’s not creating a budget for us (we’ve handled that). He’s revealing our financial mindset.

Here’s what I want my children to grasp before they leave home: money is neutral. It doesn’t have feelings. It doesn’t reward good intentions or penalize poor choices. If you lack awareness of the emotional aspects, it will influence your life without your approval, beyond just the numbers.

That’s not a lesson taught through lectures. It’s something you must demonstrate.

So we’re actively working on it because they are always observing, whether you notice or not.
