👋 I'm Andrew. I love fast-growing Startups. Ex-founder, small-time investor, and I write about Growth/PMF/OKRs.  

I've built high-growth companies in London and Silicon Valley. Over the years, I've sat on all sides of the table as a founder, investor, operator, and advisor. Currently, I have an AI and web3 bias, but I have been everywhere. 

During this journey, I created the Growth/OKR process Core & Explore™, which is now used by thousands of Startups and some large companies. 

Previously, I graduated 500 Startups; was an EIR at Seedcamp; led product and growth at my own Startup; mentored and advised VC funds; and helped behind the scenes at the founder community ICE.

Retiring as CEO of Exact, I remain involved in the business as a Non Executive Director, and Chairman of the Remuneration Committee.

Appointed by Exact’s investors in September 2017 as Chief Executive Officer. Phill restructured the business, divested or closed loss making divisions whilst re-focussing and energising the organisation. This was achieved whilst accelerating organic growth and improving margins. In the spring of 2019 Phill lead the successful buyout of Exact by KKR from APAX. Under Phill’s leadership Exact continued to achieve double digit organic growth and also made a series of acquisitions, including its main rival in The Netherlands, Unit4, in Autumn 2020.

Alongside his commitment as IRIS Chairman, HG Capital asked Phill to become one of their Operating Partners. In this role Phill worked in their portfolio to improve the performance of current investments as well as help in diligence on new deal flow. During his 12 months as Operating Partner alongside a series of portfolio initiatives he also acted as Interim CEO of Achilles for 6 months, helping reset the product strategy and hire a new leader for the business.

Following IRIS's refinancing in 2015, and HG Capitals re-investment (as the lead investor in the company), Phill proposed & agreed a process of succession, leading to the recruitment of a new CEO in December 2015. Phill became Chairman for a transition period to ensure stability for the company as it changed leadership.

AS one of the UKs largest and most successful Business Software companies IRIS enables its Accountancy customers and their SME clients to manage their financial success. IRIS is the market leader in professional Accountancy Software, and a leading provider of HCM (Human Capital Management) & Book keeping software for SMEs. 

From 2009, under Phill's leadership IRIS grew its revenue from £34m to over £130m+, whilst maintaining world-class EBITDA margins. This was achieved through a combination of consistent double digit organic revenue growth and a series of M&A transactions. Phill lead a £425m management buyout of the business from Hellman & Friedman to HG Capital in 2011, as well as a £762m refinancing initiative for HG Capital in 2015.

Velocix

Velocix was one of the worlds leading Digital Asset Delivery Networks, specifically designed to meet customers distribution and broadcast needs for delivery of video, gaming and software over the web. Velocix meets the exacting requirements of the 21st century internet, with its mirriad of rich media and large digital asset delivery needs.

During Phill's tenure Velocix went from pre-revenue stage, to commercialising its proposition and delivering $5m in subscription revenue in its first year of product availability, with customers such as Verizon and pilots implemented with BBC iPlayer.

In recent years salesforce.com disrupted the entire software industry, with its vision of software being delivered as a service over the web. Today salesforce.com has become one the fastest growing technology companies of the last 20 years, with a market cap of over $45bn. 

In his position Phill was responsible for Worldwide Sales Operations at Salesforce.com. Responsible for ongoing development and delivery of salesforce.com's global sales strategy, to maintain sales momentum for Enterprise Sales in particular.

Chief Operating Officer - Sales & Distribution

Phill was responsible for all Marketing at salesforce.com. Phill moved from the UK to San Francisco to perform this role, as an ex-pat assignment, working for the CEO. During his time in this role, Phill re-organised global marketing, and helped re-position the company from CRM to being an On Demand Platform company. Phill was responsible for Salesforce.com's unique web-centric marketing approach that relied on web and viral marketing to drive unprecedented demand and brand awareness in the business technology space.

Phill joined salesforce.com from Siebel, to help develop the European business. With other members of the management team he developed a pan-European business with field offices across Europe to establish salesforce.com as the leader of Cloud Computing in Europe.

Through a combination of web-centric "challenger" brand marketing, and physical events Phill established a brand presence and market demand to enable Salesforce.com to grow aggressively in Europe, both via phone based Sales in Dublin and its Field based offices.

Responsible for all Business Development, Alliances and Marketing for Siebel outside the domestic US market. Role included : EMEA, AsiaPac, LACA and Japan.

Siebel was the leading provider of Emterprise CRM software, establishing this software category as critical for successful Corporations. Siebel grew from $50m turnover when Phill joined the business to over $2bn when he left. 

Phill joined a team of 6 people, based in a room over a shop in Windsor, in 1996, to help estbalish a beach head for the company in Europe. At its peak Siebel grew to over 2000 employees in Europe, with offices in each major European location. 

Phill was responsible for helping make the European CRM market, and establish Siebel as its leading provider.

Director Marketing EMEA

Phill is an experienced and accomplished Chairman, CEO and Non-Executive Board Member, in the software industry. Phill was CEO of Exact, a large multi-national software business, headquartered in the Netherlands until the end of 2020. Now plural he remains a Non-Executive Director of Exact's Supervisory Board and Chairman of the Remuneration Committee. 

Phill is Founder of Boardwave, a networking platform for European software CEOs, Non-Execs, Chairpeople & their Investors. Run as an independent not-for-profit, Boardwave's goal is to bring brilliant leaders together to help turbo charge the growth and success of the software industry in Europe.

Phill is also Chairman of the Livingbridge Software Advisory Board. He is also an advisor to KKR, and a number of other Private Equity firms.

In 2017, Phill was diagnosed with Young Onset Parkinson's Disease. Phill was appointed the first Chair of the Development Board at Cure Parkinson’s, in May 2021. The goal of the Development Board is to raise the profile of Cure Parkinson’s and the money needed to enable the world's leading Neuroscientists to rapidly accelerate research into new treatments, with the potential to slow, stop or reverse Parkinson's.
