Let me guess.

It’s About Not Putting Your Head in the Sand.
One line in this conversation stopped me cold.

Jamie Dimon doesn’t dramatize AI.
He doesn’t soften it either.
He says it plainly:
“Don’t put your head in the sand.”
That sentence alone is a career warning.

Because when asked whether AI will wipe out jobs, he doesn’t hedge:
“Will it eliminate jobs? Yes.
 Will it change jobs? Yes.
 Will it add some jobs? Probably.”

This isn’t panic.
This is realism.

And then comes the line every professional should sit with:
“You can hope for the world you want, but you’re going to get the world you got.”

Hope is not an employability strategy.
What matters now is how fast change happens, and whether people are ready for it.

Dimon makes a critical distinction most career conversations miss:
The danger isn’t AI itself — it’s speed without preparation.
“If it goes too fast for society… that’s where government and business need to step in together.”

Retraining.
Relocation.
Income support.
Phasing change instead of detonating it.

His example is blunt:
“You can’t lay off two million truckers tomorrow.
 You phase it in. You retrain.”

Now zoom out and make this personal.
This is no longer just a policy issue.
It’s a career design issue.

Because a few minutes later, he’s asked the question everyone avoids:
“In five years’ time, will JP Morgan have fewer employees than it has now?”

His answer:
“My guess is there’ll be fewer employees.”
Not no employees.
Fewer.

Which means employability is shifting from:
role ownership → value ownership
job security → skill mobility
experience alone → adaptable relevance

AI won’t replace professionals.
It will replace professionals who can’t clearly explain why they still matter.

Career longevity now belongs to those who:
Reposition early
Learn continuously
And stop waiting for certainty before acting

Because as Dimon puts it:
“You’re not going to slow it down.”

The question is not if your work changes.
It’s whether you change before the market decides for you.

My 15-year-old son gave me a brutal lesson on communication.

He called me because he needed money. I expected 5 minutes of fake "small talk" before the ask. He gave me 5 seconds of radical honesty.

He said:

 "Dad, I will be honest. I am not calling to say hi. Mom is not here, I am going to the movies, can you transfer me some cash?"

I didn't get angry. I congratulated him. 
He respected my intelligence. He respected my time.

We are taught to wrap hard messages in nice words. We think we are being polite. Actually, we are just being confusing.

When you talk for 5 minutes before asking for a favor, the other person is not listening. They are just waiting for the "But."

Trust goes down. Impatience goes up.

Great leaders don’t make you guess. They make you understand.

Here is how to be direct without being rude 👇

1. Stop mixing good and bad news 
Don't hide a critique inside two fake compliments. It’s confusing. People don't know what to believe.

2. Say the important part first 
Start with the request. Or start with the decision. Give the context after. Clarity first. Explanation second.

3. Respect the "No" 
Direct leaders accept direct answers. They don’t try to negotiate everything. 
A clear "No" is better than a polite "Maybe."

4. Use simple words 
If you need help, say "I need help." 
If you made a mistake, say "I made a mistake." 
You don't need fancy words to tell the truth.

5. Trust people 
Hiding the truth assumes the other person is weak. 
Being direct assumes they are strong enough to handle reality.

Clear is kind. Unclear is not.

Next time you have a hard message, stop wrapping it in nice words.

Just say it.

Your stakeholders don't need to be protected. 
They need to know the truth.

We cannot change what we do not see.

August 2021. A best friend sent me a photo from a family day at the beach.

It was a shock. I saw the truth I was ignoring. I had gained a lot of weight.

But seeing the truth was not enough.

It took me 4 years to fix it. 

4 years of "trying." 
4 years of "wishing." 
4 years of failing.

Until June 2025. I finally made a real decision.
And I realized something important: 
I didn't need 4 years to change. I just needed 6 months of real focus.

What is the lesson for leadership?

We all have blind spots. Feedback is the "photo" that forces you to see reality.

But seeing the blind spot is only 10% of the work. 
Deciding to fix it is the other 90%.

Changing behavior as an adult is hard. 
Here is the protocol to make it happen:

1️⃣Get the "Photo" (Reality Check) 
Don't guess. Perform an anonymous 360° assessment with a professional coach. You need to see the raw truth.

2️⃣Pick ONE Battle 
Don't try to fix everything. You will fail. Choose one behavior to change. 
The Paradox: When you improve one thing, it creates a positive ripple effect on everything else.

3️⃣ Go Public Tell your stakeholders: 
"I am working on this specific goal." Commitment requires witnesses.

4️⃣The Monthly Routine (Feedforward)
Once a month, ask your colleagues for the future, not the past. Ask for 2 suggestions.

Example: "Florence, you know I am trying to be more direct in my communication. You were in the meeting with me. Please give me two suggestions to do it better next time."

5️⃣ Apply the 80/20 Rule
Listen to everything. But only act on the suggestions that have the highest potential.

6️⃣Repeat for 6 to 12 Months.
 Consistency beats intensity.

It is not easy. 
But there is no better feeling than looking back and seeing the new version of yourself.

The world isn’t getting quieter. Your mind has to. 

The person you fight today could hire you tomorrow.

We often think: "I’ll just ignore this difficult person and do my job."

That is a mistake. 

Fixing a difficult relationship could be a profitable investment in your career.

Here is an example.

Two years ago, a client wanted to give up on a key stakeholder. The relationship was draining. He wanted to build a wall. We agreed to build a bridge instead.

He applied one rule: "Seek first to understand, then to be understood."

He stopped trying to "win" the argument. He started serving the relationship.

The project succeeded. Which was already a win. 
But a bigger reward came 2 years later.

The company was acquired. That "difficult" stakeholder took a top position in a new structure. And the first person he called to join him? My client.

A good collaboration creates a "stone of luck" for your future. You never know when you will need to cross that bridge again.

So, how do you fix a broken relationship? Stop judging. Start listening.

Here are 4 steps to practice in your next meeting:

1️⃣ Silence your "Inner Judge" 
Stop preparing your answer while they speak. Listen to absorb, not to reply. 
👉 Phrase: "Can you tell me a little more about that?"

2️⃣ Validate before you move on 
Don't assume you understood. Prove it. 
👉 Phrase: "If I understand correctly, what is important to you is X, right?"

3️⃣ Use Reciprocity 
You earn the right to speak only after they feel understood. 
👉 Phrase: "Now that I understand your perspective, may I share mine?"

4️⃣ Dare to be Vulnerable 
If it makes sense, admit it immediately. It shows confidence, not weakness. 
👉 Phrase: "I came with a different opinion, but listening to you convinced me."

We think we fix relationships for others. Actually, it is a Triple Win for us. 
We upgrade our character, fix the present, and plant a "stone of luck" for our future.

After 15 years leading international teams, I've watched countless talented people get overlooked because they couldn't speak with authority.

Here's what weak leaders say vs. what strong ones do:

1️⃣ "I think maybe we should..."
↳ Sounds uncertain and invites pushback
↳ Shows you don't believe in your own ideas
✅ Say: "We need to move forward with this approach"

2️⃣ "This might not work, but..."
↳ Plants doubt before you even start
↳ Gives people permission to dismiss your idea
✅ Say: "Here's the solution that will address our challenge"

3️⃣ "Sorry to interrupt, but..."
↳ Apologizes for taking space you deserve

THE EXECUTIVE PRESENCE KILLER

Don’t confuse your habits with your character.

One is a prison. The other is a choice.

And that’s the mistake most leaders make. 
They believe the "software" is fixed.

It isn’t.

It’s just comfortable.

The moment you accept the idea that you can’t change, you stop growing. You start aging.

And that’s how leadership dies.

I’ve seen the opposite happen. And it’s powerful.

1. When you turn a vague wish into a binary question

4. When you measure progress through others, not yourself 
You stop scoring yourself. You let your environment score you. Perception becomes reality.

Change doesn’t require genius. It requires courage.

If you want more impact, more connection, and a better version of yourself in 2026, stop looking for excuses.

Take 15 minutes. 
Set the intention. 
Ask for feedback. 
Then repeat.

That’s how you change. And that’s how you last.
