It’s About Not Putting Your Head in the Sand.
One line in this conversation stopped me cold.

Jamie Dimon doesn’t dramatize AI.
He doesn’t soften it either.
He says it plainly:
“Don’t put your head in the sand.”
That sentence alone is a career warning.

Because when asked whether AI will wipe out jobs, he doesn’t hedge:
“Will it eliminate jobs? Yes.
 Will it change jobs? Yes.
 Will it add some jobs? Probably.”

This isn’t panic.
This is realism.

And then comes the line every professional should sit with:
“You can hope for the world you want, but you’re going to get the world you got.”

Hope is not an employability strategy.
What matters now is how fast change happens, and whether people are ready for it.

Dimon makes a critical distinction most career conversations miss:
The danger isn’t AI itself — it’s speed without preparation.
“If it goes too fast for society… that’s where government and business need to step in together.”

Retraining.
Relocation.
Income support.
Phasing change instead of detonating it.

His example is blunt:
“You can’t lay off two million truckers tomorrow.
 You phase it in. You retrain.”

Now zoom out and make this personal.
This is no longer just a policy issue.
It’s a career design issue.

Because a few minutes later, he’s asked the question everyone avoids:
“In five years’ time, will JP Morgan have fewer employees than it has now?”

His answer:
“My guess is there’ll be fewer employees.”
Not no employees.
Fewer.

Which means employability is shifting from:
role ownership → value ownership
job security → skill mobility
experience alone → adaptable relevance

AI won’t replace professionals.
It will replace professionals who can’t clearly explain why they still matter.

Career longevity now belongs to those who:
Reposition early
Learn continuously
And stop waiting for certainty before acting

Because as Dimon puts it:
“You’re not going to slow it down.”

The question is not if your work changes.
It’s whether you change before the market decides for you.

New ideas don’t land when the mind is closed

They land when the brain feels receptive.

Most people try to improve thinking
by defending what they already know.

❌ Proving they’re right.
❌ Protecting past decisions.
❌ Filtering out disconfirming information.

The brain reads that as threat.
So it resists.
When certainty feels required,
the nervous system shifts into protection mode.

Attention filters aggressively.

The brain prioritizes consistency, not accuracy.

This feels illegal.

I built a mobile app while sailing.

Out there, things get quiet.
No notifications fighting for attention.

Creativity requires priming.
When the nervous system feels safe,
unhurried,
and unstimulated,
the parasympathetic system activates.

The body settles.
Cortisol drops.
Neural flexibility increases.

In that state,
the brain starts making distant connections
instead of efficient ones.

Old ideas recombine.
Unrelated concepts link.
Possibility expands.

You don’t produce creativity.
You prepare the conditions for it.
Psychological safety is the primer.

Micromanagement breeds compliance.

Not commitment.

When every move is monitored,
every decision is corrected,
and every mistake is highlighted,

Most people don’t stay with toxic bosses
because they love the job.

They stay because starting over feels risky.

You already invested time.

Here’s how to regain agency
even if you can’t leave right now.

Three pillars.
Practical. Grounded. Usable.

1/ Establish your baseline
You need to know your starting state.
Stress feels normal when it’s chronic.
Without data, you guess how you’re doing.
Do this: assess how activated you feel most days.
Do this: track sleep, tension, and recovery honestly.
Baseline awareness tells you whether you’re already 
overloaded before the boss even enters the picture.

2/ Predict instead of brace
Toxic bosses are patterned.
The same situations trigger the same behavior.
Surprise is what spikes threat.
Do this: list the moments they escalate.
Do this: plan your response before it happens.
Prediction gives your nervous system what it desperately wants.
Certainty.

3/Plan recovery like it’s required
Stress doesn’t end when the meeting ends.
Unreleased activation carries forward.
That’s how burnout accumulates.
Do this: schedule recovery after interactions.
Do this: close the stress cycle deliberately.
Recovery restores clarity, confidence, and choice.

while you decide what comes next.

The answer doesn’t show up when you chase it

It shows up when you stop gripping.

Most people try to solve problems by applying more force.

❌ More analysis.
❌ More urgency.
❌ More mental effort.

The brain hears that as threat.
So it tightens.

When pressure rises,
the nervous system shifts into control mode.

Attention narrows.
Thinking becomes repetitive.

The brain looks for the least risky answer,
not the most interesting one.

That’s why clarity feels elusive when you need it most.
Insight lives in a quieter state.

When the parasympathetic nervous system activates,
the body settles.

Heart rate slows.
Breath deepens.

Solitude lowers social evaluation.
The quiet reveals what you already know.

The answer isn’t missing.
It’s waiting for peace to rise high enough
for you to hear it.

The most dangerous boss isn’t loud. 

It’s the one who says nothing.

He never yelled.
He never corrected me publicly.

He never led.
He just withheld.

No direction.
No feedback.
No expectations stated clearly.

Clients loved me.

They renewed.
They referred.
They sent emails praising the work.

Internally, I heard nothing.

No “here’s what great looks like.”
No “here’s what to improve.”
No clear metric for success.

Just silence.
And silence from a leader creates invisible expectations.
The brain hates uncertainty.
When expectations are unclear,
the amygdala reads the gap as threat.

So I filled it in.
Worked harder.
Overdelivered.
