Every time a mentee or someone on my team asks how to progress their career, I give them the framework I have stood by for years:

PIE.

Performance.
Image.
Exposure.

Performance is doing great work.
Image is how people perceive your leadership.
Exposure is ensuring key stakeholders see both.

Most people think if they perform long enough, the promotion will come.

Unfortunately, it won’t. It’s a combination of all 3 working in tandem that makes you stand out from your peers.

I had to learn this in my career and hopefully it helps you too.

So how do you apply this model you ask?

When is that model tested the most?

When are career-defining, make-or-break moments decided?

Well the answer is almost always… in a presentation.

The strategy update.
The board review.
