I glimpsed the future after chatting with Ahmed Abdelrahman, CTO of Bayzat, the region’s top HR tech platform.

A great CTO doesn’t just follow the ball, they see where it’s going. 

Which is easier said than done in these bizarre times.

After our chat, it was clear that Ahmed has the key traits needed from tech leaders in this phase:

1- They know old playbooks won’t work anymore

They’re rewriting new ones like scientists; running experiments with AWS and
Amazon Bedrock to measure real ROI and testing innovations gradually with their 3,000+ clients.

2- They work backwards from the customer

They know that the underlying technology isn’t what matters, it’s how it helps solve a business problem for the end user. And if it doesn’t, then it shouldn't be forced as the solution.

3- They understand culture and user psychology

Every organization is a bit different, and how they navigate different company structures, cultures, and technical maturities across regions is key to providing scalable value. 

SO...I’m working on some exciting new content with Ahmed and other key technical leaders in the region, exploring how these pioneers are striking the balance between autonomy and control when integrating agents into their platforms for this brave new world.

11 incredible women founders from the Epic Angels cohort at the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Kuala Lumpur office, as part of the SheGrows Global programme — a collaboration between United Nations ESCAP and the Government of Colombia.

These founders from South-East Asia and Mesoamerica are building impactful ventures across climate tech, circular economy, and agritech and their energy was contagious.

At AWS, we’re deeply committed to empowering climate innovators, through programs like AWS Activate, purpose-built initiatives in the Climate Tech space, and collaborations that help startups experiment, scale, and deploy solutions faster. 

During our session, we shared examples of startups using AWS to drive real-world sustainability impact, from carbon tracking to smart agriculture and how they can access global resources to accelerate growth.

It was also great to be part of the panel discussion alongside Estefanía Abello Plata, CFA and Melissa Chavana moderated by the one and only Elena Kersey who reached out to make all of this happen in the first place.

Few policymakers and investors also joined in as we dived deeper into how technology, capital, and cross-sector collaboration can help startups solve climate challenges at scale. The dialogue was thoughtful, ambitious, and truly global in perspective.

This was definitely a first of this kind and a real surprise. 🙏 

Over the years, I’ve had a few surprise birthday celebrations one from a very close friend, Arooj Ismail, an inspiring startup founder and my cohort fellow from Acumen, another from my time at Careem with the then-amazing team, and one for my 40th with a great bunch of adventurers in Karachi. 

This latest one adds to that list, but for very different reasons, Ghee Leng Ooi, Muhammad Usman, and the Embedded LLM team pulled off a surprise celebration right in the middle of a panel, just before we wrapped up with an incredible group of people.

I’ll share a more detailed post later, but the timing couldn’t have been better it also marks one year of vLLM Malaysia, so double the celebrations.
