Here’s how I stayed close to them while on the road.

It’s easy to get caught up in the big company travel routine.

-Hopping on planes to fix problems for your company.
-Staying in the hotel because your meeting finished too late.
-Another lonely dinner at the bar when you should be at home with the family.

I was in corporate for 26 years. When I realized I was spending more time on the road than at home, I changed my routine.

Here’s the reality.

You can get busy with travel, but you have to carve out time for who’s most important in your life.

Long term, you need to be in control and leverage your time in a way that’s aligned with your priorities first.

When I was a kid, I had a severe asthma attack.

It was a horrifying experience.

I couldn’t breathe. I woke up gasping for air.

Dad put me in the old rusty Datsun and rushed me to the ER.

Two things I’ll never forget:

1. the feeling of not being able to breathe through my nose.
2. the shot of adrenaline that made my heart beat through my shirt

If my parents hadn’t reacted so quickly, I wouldn’t be here today.

I’m grateful for many reasons.

But the most important?

You understand that no one guarantees tomorrow.

You only get one go-around at life.

And yet, we complain about the promotion we didn’t get.

We compare ourselves to others' success.
We never build the life we want because we stay busy, not productive.

Wake up.

It’s now o’clock or never!

Make the most of life.

Live abroad.
Put yourself out there.
Start the side business you dream of.
Build intentional relationships.

Travel feels different since leaving corporate.

“Last call for flight 217 to Madrid!”

Deep in thought, I boarded my late Thursday morning flight.
(𝘗𝘪𝘤: 𝘔𝘦 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘢𝘳𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘦)

Before, I left on a moment's notice for work.

Why?

Because my family’s financial livelihood depended on my paycheck. I had to be Mr. Reliable at work. I couldn't risk losing my job.

My self-worth? It was tied up in my role, so when the company needed me, I complied.

Constant last-minute travel to meet with customers. 

Never-ending explanations to my family about how important this trip was. I didn’t want to let the company or my family down. But I felt like I was letting everyone down, no matter what decision I made.

It was hard to admit, but I didn’t feel like I owned my most valuable resource.

My time.

So, I decided to start a side business during my corporate career.

It was terrifying that I’d spent two decades going down one path. Building another felt like a risk. But this path gave me the freedom to leverage the skills I built in corporate, generate income, and control my time.

Getting started helps increase your confidence in the 9-5 and what you do in your 5-9. You instantly become more aware of your priorities. As a result, you can align your time use accordingly. Your life finally begins to feel in harmony.
