...but no one bothered to ask that question when the world got introduced to DeepMind's AlphaGo or AlphaFold?

The technology isn't so much different, but 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘪𝘵 is.

In Noema Magazine piece by Anil Seth, British neuroscientist and professor of Cognitive and Computational Neuroscience, writes: "One aspect of intelligent behavior that’s turned out to be particularly effective at making some people think that AI could be conscious is language. This is likely because language is a cornerstone of human exceptionalism."

All these systems run on silicon and involve artificial neural networks. But AlphaFold, which manipulates protein structure rather than words, just doesn’t pull our strings in the same way.

To be aware of one's on cognitive biases is also a message repeated by Melanie Mitchell in a recent talk "On Evaluating Cognitive Capabilities in Machines" (https://lnkd.in/e38RFWKm).

More often than not, AI researchers demonstrate a shocking lack of curiosity about the underlying mechanisms that power their programs.
